Wenn man sich einmal mit der Existenz eines solchen .Auferstehungsmeisters' an­ gefreundet hat, werden manche Hilfskonstruktionen des Verf. entbehrlich erscheinen, so die Annahme eines recht kurzen .Konstantinopler Intermezzos" in Studenica, das nur für den .Passionsmeister' gebraucht wurde (S. 181 f.), aber sich aus der Sicht des .Auferstehungsmeisters' nicht mehr so episodenhaft ausnimmt. Allerdings ist jetzt die Frage wieder offen, welche Rolle der für Nagoricino so überzeugend charakterisierte .Passionsmeister' in den älteren Schöpfungen der „Malerschule' gespielt hat, d. h. die Frage nach den Personalstilen und dem wirklichen oeuvre der .Malerschule". Bei der weiteren Diskussion des Problems .Michael und Eutychios' wird man immer wieder auf H. zurückgreifen müssen,dessen Arbeit im Methodischen einen beträcht­ lichen Gewinn für die Geschichte der spätbyzantinischen Malerei bedeutet. Sie stellt einen imponierenden Versuch dar, auf die schwierige Frage nach einer Künstler­ entwicklung im Rahmen spätbyzantinischer Werkstätten exakt begründete Antworten zu finden. Wenn ihre Ergebnisse heute neu überprüft werden müssen, so darf dabei nicht vergessen werden, daß H. von einem älteren Zustand der Denkmäler ausgegan­ gen ist, der sich inzwischen durch die Reinigung der Fresken wesentlich verändert hat.

The Nazi's considered his art to be "degenerate;" he was forbidden to teach, and many of his works were confiscated. He had a distinguished career as an artist and educator after World War II. 2. Oktober wird Max Arthur Ackermann in Berlin als zweites von 5 Kindern der Eheleute Adalbert Reinhold und Marie Pauline Louise Ackermann, geb. Ossann, geboren. 1891 Ü bersiedlung der Familie in ihre thüringische Heimat, wo der an der Nürnberger Kunstgewerbeschule zum Bildhauer ausgebildete Vater eine Möbel- und Rahmenwerkstatt in Ilmenau eröffnet. 1894 Beginn des Besuchs der Ilmenauer Volksschule. 1902 Eine Wanderung zum Kickelhahn läßt in dem zeichnerisch begabten 14jä hrigen Schulabgä nger den Wunsch reifen, die ornamentalen historistischen Fingerübungen in der vä terlichen Werkstatt zugunsten naturalistisch-idealistischer Naturstudien aufzugeben und eine künstlerische Laufbahn einzuschlagen. 1903 Beginn einer Lehre als Porzellanmodelleur in einer Illmenauer Porzellanmanufaktur. 1905 Nach dem frühen Tod des Vaters muß die Mutter mit einem Krä merladen die sechsköpfige Familie ernä hren. In dem ab August geführten Tagebuch werden Modellierversuche, freie Aktstudien und Zeichnungen nach der Natur festgehalten und kommentiert. 1906 Die erfolgreiche Teilnahme mit Modellierarbeiten und Zeichnungen an einer Ausstellung des Ilmenauer Gewerbevereins verhilft Ackermann zu einem Probemonat im Atelier von Henry van de Velde in Weimar. Aufgrund seiner Begabung verschafft ihm dieser ab Oktober eine einjä hrige Freistelle am Groß herzoglichen Kunstgewerblichen Seminar in Weimar (Lehrer: Henry van de Velde). Gleichzeitig Besuch von Abend-Aktkursen bei Hans Olde und Ludwig von Hofmann an der Groß herzoglichen Kunstschule in Weimar. Hä ufige Theater- und Opernbesuche.
