Glories of Govardhan - Part 1

Date: 2015-11-12 Author: Kalacakra Krsna das

Hare Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

The Supreme Lord is all glorious for He appears in different forms and performs different kinds of pastimes. The Lord's pastimes are very unique and cannot be replicated by anyone else. Today is the auspicious occasion of Govardhan pooja wherein Lord performed the unique pastime of appearing in the form of Giriraj, as a part of His mission of pleasing His devotees and vanquishing demoniac tendencies like pride. In Srimad Bhagavatam 10.21.18, the gopis very nicely glorify Govardhan as follows:

hantāyam adrir abalā hari-dāsa-varyo yad rāma-kṛṣṇa-caraṇa-sparaśa-pramodaḥ mānaṁ tanoti saha-go-gaṇayos tayor yat pānīya-sūyavasa-kandara-kandamūlaiḥ

We all know that gopis are dearmost devotees of the Lord. Here in this verse we find the gopis glorifying the . So we can just imagine how great Govardhan is. Srila Prabhupada very beautifully explains the above verse in his Krishna book as follows:

Another gopi began to praise the unique position of Govardhana Hill in this way: How fortunate is this Govardhana Hill, for it is enjoying the association of Lord Krishna and , who are accustomed to walking on it. Thus Govardhana is always in touch with the lotus feet of the Lord. And because Govardhana Hill is so obliged to Lord Krishna and Balarama, it is supplying different kinds of fruits, roots and herbs, as well as very pleasing crystal water from its lakes, in presentation to the Lord. The best presentation offered by Govardhana Hill, however, is newly grown grass for the cows and calves. Govardhana Hill knows how to please the Lord by pleasing His most beloved associates, the cows and the cowherd boys.

1) The fortune of Govardhan: The gopis are explaining the reason why Govardhan is fortunate. yad rāma-kṛṣṇa- caraṇa-sparaśa-pramodaḥ - Govardhan is fortunate because it has the foot-prints of Lord Krishna and Balarama on it. Govardhan is special because it constantly has the sparaś or touch of His lotus feet. As soon as Krishna's touch is there everything becomes lively. We can see how Kunti Maharani also while praying to Krishna, says in Srimad Bhagavatam 1.8.39-40, how the whole kingdom of the Pandavas was flourishing and appeared beautiful because of Krishna's footprints.

neyaṁ śobhiṣyate tatra yathedānīṁ gadādhara tvat-padair aṅkitā bhāti sva-lakṣaṇa-vilakṣitaiḥ

ime jana-padāḥ svṛddhāḥ supakvauṣadhi-vīrudhaḥ vanādri-nady-udanvanto hy edhante tava vīkṣitaiḥ

O Gadadhara [Krishna], our kingdom is now being marked by the impressions of Your feet, and therefore it appears beautiful. But when You leave, it will no longer be so. All these cities and villages are flourishing in all respects because the herbs and grains are in abundance, the trees are full of fruits, the rivers are flowing, the hills are full of minerals and the oceans full of wealth. And this is all due to Your glancing over them. Our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj says how Krishna's touch enlivens us and brightens our life. Even though our faces might not be good looking, the moment we wear 'tilak' (which is the lotus feet of the Lord) and get in touch with Lord by chanting His Holy names, we appear bright. Such is the potency of Lord's touch.

Krishna willing we shall continue to meditate more on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering, "Glories of Govardhan", wherein we were meditating on verse 10.21.18 of Srimad Bhagavatam. In the previous offering we saw how the gopis were glorifying the great fortune of Govardhan. Now we shall see further.

hantāyam adrir abalā hari-dāsa-varyo yad rāma-kṛṣṇa-caraṇa-sparaśa-pramodaḥ mānaṁ tanoti saha-go-gaṇayos tayor yat pānīya-sūyavasa-kandara-kandamūlaiḥ

Srila Prabhupada very beautifully explains the above verse in his Krishna book as follows. "Another gopi began to praise the unique position of Govardhana Hill in this way: "How fortunate is this Govardhana Hill, for it is enjoying the association of Lord Krishna and Balarama, who are accustomed to walking on it. Govardhana Hill knows how to please the Lord by pleasing His most beloved associates, the cows and the cowherd boys."

2) Service Attitude: The word pramodaḥ in the above verse means 'jubilant'. Since the Transcendental brothers, Lord Krishna and Balaram, were touching Govardhan hill, the hill became pramodaḥ - very jubilant. When some one is very kind to us and if we are sane enough to recognise and appreciate the kindness, then we would feel very grateful to that person and would always be eager to serve them in return, to the best of our ability. Govardhan is described by gopis as 'hari-dāsa-varyaḥ' - 'best among servants of Hari'. His Divine Grace very nicely mentions that Govardhan felt very much obliged and wanted to give some presentations or gifts in return to Lord's benevolent act of placing His lotus feet on him. And he eagerly supplied the following gifts. Pānīya-sūyavasa-kandara-kandamūlaiḥ - pleasing crystal water from its lakes, very soft grass, caves and edible roots. In Krishna says in 9.26,

patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati tad ahaṁ bhakty-upahṛtam aśnāmi prayatātmanaḥ

If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.

So to the best of his ability Govardhan offered all of the above things with great devotion to Lord. For each one of us Krishna has appeared in our lives and homes in the form of Holy Names, Gita and Deity and is mercifully touching our lives. So just like how Govardhan hill is feeling grateful for Lord's touch and using all his energy in serving Supreme Lord, we should also engage our body, mind and words fully in His service.

In the previous offering we saw how the gopis were glorifying the great fortune of and service attitude if Sri Govardhan. Now we shall see further.

hantāyam adrir abalā hari-dāsa-varyo yad rāma-kṛṣṇa-caraṇa-sparaśa-pramodaḥ mānaṁ tanoti saha-go-gaṇayos tayor yat pānīya-sūyavasa-kandara-kandamūlaiḥ

Srila Prabhupada very beautifully explains the above verse in his Krishna book as follows. "Another gopi began to praise the unique position of Govardhana Hill in this way: How fortunate is this Govardhana Hill, for it is enjoying the association of Lord Krishna and Balarama, who are accustomed to walking on it.

2) Service Attitude: His Divine Grace very nicely mentions how Govardhan knew the secret of pleasing Krishna. Govardhan not only served Krishna and Balaram alone. He knew that Lord is more pleased when one serves His dear devotees. So Govardhan served all the inhabitants of Gokula - the cows, calves, gopas and gopis with great respect - maanam tanoti saha-go--ganayos tayor yat. The words maanam tanoti in the above verse means 'offering respect'. Quite often when we do some service with motives, we tend to be casual and careless over time. As a result, after some time we will loose the taste and opportunity to serve. So we should be careful that one and only motive is to please Krishna and not for getting name and fame out of that service. The glories of Govardhan is that it could not move around. He was just a hill and had to be situated just in one position. He had to face the onslaughts of scorching heat, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. But Govardhan never complained or stopped its service. But with great patience and tolerance carried on its service without any complaint. There might be situations in life when physical health does not co-operate and make us immobile. We might not be able to do the same active services which we had done when we were younger. But we can take inspiration from Govardhan to serve Lord in all conditions, if we have simple desire and determination to serve Him. Sri Bilva Mangala Thakura says in Sri Damodara stotra verse 38,

sukhaḿ śayānā nilaye nije 'pi nāmāni viṣṇoḥ pravadanti martyāḥ te niścitaḿ tanmayatāḿ vrajanti govinda dāmodara mādhaveti

Even if one is lying down and chanting the Holy Names, then Lord assures that such persons will definitely reach Him. As Caitanya Mahaprabhu also says, there are no hard and fast rules for chanting the Holy Names of the Lord. So even if we are not able to physically move, we can still serve the Lord by chanting His Names.

Krishna willing we shall continue to meditate more on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering, "Glories of Govardhan", wherein we were meditating on verse 10.21.18 of Srimad Bhagavatam, wherein the gopis were glorifying Govardhan. So far we have seen the great fortune and service attitude of Sri Govardhan. Now we shall see further.

3) Pride cometh before fall: Another important lesson we can learn from Govardhan lila is about the ill-effects of pride. Krishna was very pleased with Govardhan for his good behaviour, in spite of being a hill. Whereas in spite of being devotee of Supreme Lord became, puffed up of his powers and forgot the supremacy of Krishna. Lord wanted to teach Indra a lesson. So in order to make Indra angry, Lord asked the cowherd men to stop the Indra-puja. Krishna told the inhabitants of to do sacrifice, to please the local brahmanas and Govardhana hill. He instructed them to prepare lot of food items using grains, ghee and milk. After honouring the brahmanas with grains and money, He then instructed the cowherd men to give the prasadam to all grades of people including candalas and lower animals like cats and dogs. Krishna did not ask them to give even the prasadam to Indra. Because of pride, Indra was neglected completely by Lord and was deprived even of the prasadam. Indra vented his anger by asking the Samvartaka cloud to inundate the whole area of Vrindavan and thereby destroying its inhabitants - the cowherd people and the cows. In Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna says to Arjuna in verse 3.37,

śrī-bhagavān uvāca kāma eṣa krodha eṣa rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ mahāśano mahā-pāpmā viddhy enam iha vairiṇam

It is lust only, Arjuna, which is born of contact with the material mode of passion and later transformed into wrath, and which is the all-devouring sinful enemy of this world.

Indra's desire to enjoy the offerings of the cowherd men, without honoring the Supreme Lord, transformed to wrath when the offerings were deprived for him. So being blinded by pride and anger, Indra became so fallen that he decided to even kill the innocent cows of Vrindavan, thereby displeasing the Supreme Lord. Krishna smashed his pride by lifting the Govardhana hill using the little finger on the left hand and protected the cows, brahmanas and all the inhabitants of Vrindavana.

So far we have seen the below points:

1. The great fortune of Govardhan 2. Service Attitude of Govardhan 3. Pride cometh before the fall.

Now we shall see further.

4) Krishna's reciprocation: Our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj sings a nice Gujarati bhajan (koino bhār na rākhe murāri) composed by great devotee Narsi Mehta in which he explains how Krishna never keeps debts with anyone and that His reciprocation is always beyond expectation of His dear devotees. In that song Narsi Mehta gives us example of how Sudama gave just little chipped rice, but Krishna gave him golden palaces in return. Once when Krishna finger was hurt, Draupadi without any second thoughts, just tore a little bit of cloth from her saree to be used as a bandage for Krishna and at the hour of need, Krishna gave back 999 sarees in the assembly of Kauravas when Dushaashan tried to disrobe her. In case of Govardhan also we saw how Govardhan offered all its resources to Krishna and His devotees and Krishna honoured Govardhan by asking the Vrajavasis to worship Govardhan and later Krishna Himself took the form of Govardhan and declared that Govardhan hill is non-different from Him.

Indra on the other hand, out of pride tried to harm the cows and Vrajavasis. Since Krishna never tolerates demoniac qualities like pride in his devotees. He also never tolerates the troubles inflicted upon His devotees. So Krishna decided to smash Indra's pride by asking the Vrajavasis to worship a hill. Few years ago we heard from a senior devotee as to how Krishna did not ask the Vrajavasis to worship any other demigod like or . He did not even ask them to worship any other human being or animal also. He asked them to worship an inanimate entity like hill to point out to Indra that because of his pride he has become hard-hearted like rocks and stone in hill and doesn't deserve any respect or sacrifice. So for all the seven days and seven nights of terrific rain, the Vrajavasis all had wonderful darshan of the Lord all the time and never felt any hunger, thirst, cold or sleep. They were also satisfied simply by the darshan and continuous association of the Lord. Indra then came back to his senses and realised his grave mistake. So he stopped the rains. Later when everything came back to normal, Krishna asked the Vrajavasis to return to their homes and then placed Govardhana hill back in place.

Krishna willing we shall continue more on this topic in the subsequent offering.

So far we have seen the below points:

1. The great fortune of Govardhan 2. Service Attitude of Govardhan 3. Pride cometh before the fall 4. Krishna's reciprocation

Now we shall continue to meditate on Krishna's reciprocation.

4. Krishna's Reciprocation: Indra felt very ashamed when he realised that the little Krishna in Vrindavana was not an ordinary child, but the Supreme Personality of Godhead, his eternal master. Indra realised that because of his pride and arrogance, he had foolishly considered himself as the supreme controller of the universe. So he goes and seeks advice from Lord , who instructs him to go along with Surabhi cow and meet Krishna and seek forgivance. Cows are very very dear to Krishna and Indra had troubled the cows of Vrindavana and thereby offended Krishna. So Indra with great hesitation went to meet Krishna along with Mother Surabhi. When small children do some mistake and feel fearful to meet the father, they take shelter of the mother. Likewise we see Indra feeling very morose and repentant for his grave mistake, met Krishna who was sitting at the base of Govardhana hill. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 10.27.2, Sukadeva Goswami describes their meeting very nicely through the following verse.

vivikta upasaṅgamya vrīḍītaḥ kṛta-helanaḥ pasparśa pādayor enaṁ kirīṭenārka-varcasā

Indra was very ashamed of having offended the Lord. Approaching Him in a solitary place, Indra fell down and lay his helmet, whose effulgence was as brilliant as the sun, upon the Lord's lotus feet.

The word vivikta in the above verse means solitary place. In the purport to above verse a beautiful reason is mentioned why Krishna had arranged for a solitary meeting. "From the commentaries of the acaryas we understand that Lord Krishna wanted to provide a solitary meeting for Indra so that he would not be further humiliated. Indra came to surrender and beg forgiveness, and the Lord allowed him to do so privately."

How much sensitive is the Lord to the feelings of His devotees? Lord knew that Indra is coming to genuinely repent for his mistake. So in order not to embarass him anymore, Krishna arranged for a solitary meeting. When somebody offends us, we tend to make use of every opportunity to decry, deride or minimise them. Since our intent is neither pure, nor are we genuine well-wishers of other person, by our chastisement we neither help the offender nor ourselves. On the other hand in this pastime we see that being a caring and responsible Supreme Father and best well-wisher, Krishna punished Indra when he was puffed up. But the moment he was repentant and decided to approach the Lord for forgivance, Krishna took so much care to ensure him a solitary meeting.

Krishna willing we shall meditate further on this topic in subsequent offering.

So far we have seen the below points:

1. The great fortune of Govardhan 2. Service Attitude of Govardhan 3. Pride cometh before the fall 4. Krishna's reciprocation

Now we shall see further.

5. Punishment is also Krishna's mercy: Indra very humbly approached Lord Krishna and offered his obeisances unto Him. After hearing and seeing the transcendental power of omnipotent Lord, he gave up his false pride in being the Lord of three worlds and began to offer wonderful prayers. Glorifying the Supreme Lord, he said how he foolishly mistook Krishna to be a ordinary person who out of passion and ignorance is trying to compete with him in the sacrifice that was planned by the residents of Vrindavan. Indra said that symptoms of greed, lust, anger and envy could be found only in ignorant people who are entangled in the material modes of nature. The Supreme Lord is transcendental to the material modes and He is above all these qualities. He sought forgivance for his grave mistake of harming the cows and residents of Vrindavana and for not recognising Krishna's supremacy. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 10.27.6 Lord Indra says,

pitā gurus tvaṁ jagatām adhīśo duratyayaḥ kāla upātta-daṇḍaḥ hitāya cecchā-tanubhiḥ samīhase mānaṁ vidhunvan jagad-īśa-māninām

You are the father and spiritual master of this entire universe, and also its supreme controller. You are insurmountable time, imposing punishment upon the sinful for their own benefit. Indeed, in Your various incarnations, selected by Your own free will, You act decisively to remove the false pride of those who presume themselves masters of this world.

Indra realised that whatever Krishna did to him, was out of care and concern for him. So he addresses Lord as father (pita) and spiritual master (guru) of all. Parents as well as spiritual master never want their son or disciple to get into wrong path. So at the right moment they chastise or punish for the well-being (hitāya) of the child or disciple. There is famous proverb, "Spare the rod and spoil the child." Since Krishna is Supreme Father, spiritual master and controller (īśa) for all living entities, He ensures to give the right punishment to all living entities irrespective of whether they are devotees, demigods or demons as He never wants them to get spoilt. Lord doesn't want us to be rotting in this material world, but is very anxious to get us back home, back to Godhead.

Indra glorified that Lord being Supremely independent, takes any kind of form (ca icchā tanubhiḥ) to smash the false pride. Lord sometimes takes the form of fish, tortoise, Narasimha rupa and now in case of Indra, Lord even took the form of Govardhana hill. And He does all of these in order to bring His children back to right path. Krishna willing we shall continue more on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much. Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva, Kalacakra Krsna das. Glories of Govardhan - Part 8

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering, "Glories of Govardhan", wherein we saw the below five points:

1. The great fortune of Govardhan 2. Service Attitude of Govardhan 3. Pride cometh before the fall 4. Krishna's reciprocation 5. Punishment is also Krishna's mercy.

Now we shall see further.

6. Always remember Krishna: In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 10.27.15 Lord says,

śrī-bhagavān uvāca mayā te ’kāri maghavan makha-bhaṅgo ’nugṛhṇatā mad-anusmṛtaye nityaṁ mattasyendra-śriyā bhṛśam

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Indra, it was out of mercy that I stopped the sacrifice meant for you. You were greatly intoxicated by your opulence as King of heaven, and I wanted you to always remember Me.

After listening to Indra's prayers, the Lord smiled and told him that whenever people become falsely proud, He stands with punishment rod near such people in order to remind them to always remember Him. The line mad-anusmrtaye nityam means 'Always remember Me'. Krishna is so pure and potent that moment we start thinking about Him, we also get purified of all anarthas. As a loving father, Krishna gives us so may chance to remember Him.

Remembrance of Supreme Lord is the greatest asset in one's life. Our beloved spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj says that the root cause of all difficulties and problems in life is forgetfulness of Krishna. Lord was very upset with Indra in the beginning, but the moment he realised his mistake and surrendered to Supreme Lord and sought forgivance, Lord treated Indra with great compassion. He not only forgave Indra, but also told him, "Indra, you may now go. Execute My order and remain in your appointed position as King of heaven. But be sober, without false pride." This is instruction not just for Indra, but it applies for all of us. Wherever we are placed by will of Supreme Lord, if we do our prescribed duties sincerely and devoid of pride, then Krishna is very pleased.

Krishna willing we shall continue further on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in conclusion of the previous offering, "Glories of Govardhan", wherein were meditating on few lessons that we can learn from this pastime. Now we shall see further.

7. By pleasing Govinda everyone is pleased: The heavenly cow Surabhi along with her progeny later thanked Krishna for protecting the cows of Vrindavan from terrible danger. She knew that just like how she cared for younger cows, Krishna also has motherly affection for all the cows. So feeling grateful she offered her thanks to the Lord. She understood although Indra is supposed to be their protector, he had attempted to kill the cows. Recognising that Supreme Lord alone is the real protector, she requested the Lord to become their Indra. She then expressed her desire to perform Lord's bathing ceremony and coronate Him as Indra. Then mother Surabhi performed His bathing ceremony with her own milk and Indra along with his mother and other mothers of the demigods, anointed the Lord with heavenly Ganga water and gave Him the name Govinda.

In Srimad Bhagavatam we find this name 'Govinda' being used in different verses and His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada has given many wonderful meanings for that name. Govinda means the Personality of Godhead, who enlivens the cows and the senses, the giver of all pleasures, proprietor of Goloka dhaama, the Supreme Personality of Pleasure. In his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam verse 1.8.21, Srila Prabhupada says, "His pastimes with and Yashoda and His pastimes with the cowherd men and especially with the cowherd boys and the cows have caused Him to be known as Govinda. Lord Krishna as Govinda is more inclined to the brahmanas and the cows, indicating thereby that human prosperity depends more on these two items, namely brahminical culture and cow protection. Lord Krishna is never satisfied where these are lacking.

So when Surabhi and Indra performed this bathing ceremony, all the demigods chanted prayers glorifying the Lord and showered flowers on Him. True to the meaning of His name, all three worlds felt supreme satisfaction. Srimad Bhagavatam very nicely describes how out of joy all the cows drenched the surface of earth with milk, rivers overflowed with tasty liquids and hills exposed valuable jewels which were earlier hidden in the interiors. Sukadeva Goswami very beautifull describes in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 10.27.27 as to what happened when Lord Govinda was glorified.

kṛṣṇe ’bhiṣikta etāni sarvāṇi kuru-nandana nirvairāṇy abhavaṁs tāta krūrāṇy api nisargataḥ

O Parikshit, beloved of the Kuru dynasty, upon the ceremonial bathing of Lord Krishna, all living creatures, even those cruel by nature, became entirely free of enmity.

Krishna is Supreme pure, param pavitram and He is self-sufficient and not in need of any service from us. But still by trying to serve the all Supreme Lord Govinda, all our anarthas, our demoniac tendencies also get cleansed and we can experience Supreme bliss. In his Krishna book, His Divine Grace very nicely concludes that, "Because of Krishna's presence, all these things happened very nicely, and the lower animals, who were generally envious of one another, were envious no longer. This great incident is a powerful example of how Krishna consciousness can benefit the world. Even the lower animals forget their envious nature and become elevated to the qualities of the demigods.

May we pray at the lotus feet of Sri Sri Giridhari, Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva that we always remember these wonderful lessons and engage in Their service.

Hare Krishna. Thank you very much. Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva, Kalacakra Krsna das.
