They appeared on the earth about 5000 years ago. Krishna actually appears to show His Vrindavan pastimes and to attract all of us to go back home, back to Godhead. He also killed many demons while on the earth. Lord Krishna appeared as the son of Devaki and Vasudeva. Because they were imprisoned by King Kamsa, Vasudeva exchanged Baby Krishna with Mother Yasoda and Nanda Maharaj’s child. Mother Yashoda and Nada Maharaj didn’t know this and raised Krishna as their son. Balaram was the son of Rohini and Vasudeva. Rohini was another wife of Vasudeva. Rohini and Balaram were put under the care of Nand Maharaj also. Even though Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and Balaram is His first expansion (Balaram has all the potencies of Krishna), They played just like little children. They would play games with their friends and take the cow to pasture everyday. But at the same time, they showed Their wonderful strength in killing many demons. How many demons can you think of that Krishna killed? Krishna also reestablished religion by speaking the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. When they were just about t begin the Battle of Kurukshetra, Arjuna became confused and didn’t want to fight. He asked Krishna to pull his chariot up between the armies so he could see both sides. Then Krishna spoke Bhagavad Gita to His friend, teaching Him that we are not the body, but eternal spirit soul. Because of the greatness of what Krishna spoke, the Bhagavad Gita is still studied and heard today as a great scripture. It means “song of God” and is a very special scripture because the Lord spoke it Himself. There are many, many stories about Krishna and Balaram’s pastimes. We will read some of the stories that are told in Krishna Book rather than writing them here. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. In the Vedic text he is known by the names like Urugai, Urukram 'which means wide going and wide striding respectively'^. In the Rgvedic text he is also referred by the names like Varat who is none other than says N. P. Joshi^. In the Rgvedhe occupies a subordinate position and is mentioned only in six hymns'*. In the Rgvedic text he is solar deity associated with days and seasons'. References to the worship of early form of Vishnu in India are found in inscribed on the pillar at Vidisha. The Deities of New Vrindaban Aaron Boyd, Maggie Dorsten, Lauren Spartano, and Stephanie Villaire 1 Deity Worship in the Hare Krishna Faith Hare Krishna devotees make the distinction that they perform Deity worship and not idol worship. Madhudvisa dasa, a member of the New Vrindaban community, explains, “It is Krishna on the altar, not a stone statue or an idol. But unless our eyes are purified we can’t see Krishna, we think he is a statue…but he is Krishna. We worship Krishna, not a ‘form of Krishna’ or a ‘statue of Krishna’.” In other words, Krishna is so spiritual that He cannot be seen with the senses. Therefore, Krishna agrees to appear in the form of a Deity so that devotees can worship and make offerings to Him. More specifically, each day, the devotees cook seven meals for Krishna, bathe and dress Him, and chant and sing songs for Him. Deity Construction No hard and fast rules exist to govern the type of material from which the Deities must be constructed. A Deity (also known as a “murti”) can be made out of any type of material because devotees believe that Krishna can appear in any form. According to Madhudvisa dasa, “The Deity is made by a devotee, but the devotee doesn’t try to ‘make’ Krishna. He prays for Krishna to appear in the form of the Deity.” Installing Deities The question of whether or not to open a Hare Krishna center must be considered carefully before actions are taken. Once a Hare Krishna temple is installed, it is impossible to un-install the Deities within it.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev. Few days ago the festival of Deepavali was celebrated. It is the day wherein Lord Sri Krishna was tied in the wooden mortar by Yashoda mata. Also this is the day of victorious entry of Lord Rama into Ayodhya after the war with Ravana. Also this month is called 'Damodar'. Damo means rope and udara means stomach. One who is tied around the stomach is called Lord Damodara. This month is like season offer Krishna has given as He knows the mentality of people in Kaliyuga. With all these concessions, we are not taking up to lovingly chant His Names and therefore He has to give lot of discount sales on devotional service and take away the sins of performers. This pastime of the Lord being tied to a mortar by His mother is a very fascinating pastime and year after year we hear the same pastime but it is always fresh and enlivening. Yashoda mata particularly teaches us how to attract the mercy of Krishna quickly by unflinching devotional service. There are specifically 3 verses which gives the very easy way to attract the mercy of the Lord. Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 10, Chapter 9 describes this pastime very wonderfully and Srila Prabhupada summarizes this chapter as follows. Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (Hum.), Vol. 60(1), 2015, pp. 79-90 WORSHIP OF BALARAMA IN COOCHBEHAR: A HISTORICAL STUDY Bijoy Kumar Sarkar* Abstract The worship of Balarama, the elder of Krishna was very popular in the Kamta- Koch Kingdom; he is still worshipped independently or along with Krishna in a number of temples in Coochbehar. However, he still remains utterly untouched historically and independently as he should have been. An attempt has been made here to study the background, nature and extent of Balarama’s worship in the Coochbehar State along with exploring out the causes of its immense popularity. The question of Balarama’s worship as one of the Vyuhas and/or of the Avataras or something else has also been addressed. Keeping in view the simultaneous worship of Balarama and Manasa on special occasions, their relationship in popular concept has also been investigated. We have consulted the original source materials complementing with relevant secondary sources and undertaken field trips to explore the issue. It is found that Balaram’s identity as a patron of agriculture and a deity of fertility - Hala (ploughshare) being his most distinctive weapon and Halayudha as his nomenclature – contributed considerably to his popularity among the pre-dominantly agricultural people of the Kamata-Koch Kingdom. The history of Vishnu-worship may be traced in Kamarupa from early times in light of erection of a cave temple for Balabhadrasvamin in the 5th century A.D. In Kamarupa and Kamata-Koch Kingdom, the Bhakti movement, known as Neo- Vaishnavism, was launched by Sankaradeva.
