Rapid CABERNET (1) ACCORDING (1) TO THE SURGEON GENERAL, extraction prompted us to shorten fermenta- tion times and frequency of pump-overs. Once natural malolactics finished in barrel, we chose SAUVIGNON lots with great fruit definition and elegant structure for the assemblage, and returned the wine to barrel for continued aging. In late fall, a complex press lot was included, providing ESTATE additional depth and richness. Nineteen months in barrel has softened tannins and clarified the wine. Sensuous and enjoyable now, it will continue to develop over the next twelve to fifteen years. part one A California Wine Primer Olken_Ch00_FM.indd 1 7/13/10 12:07:51 PM Olken_Ch00_FM.indd 2 7/13/10 12:07:52 PM A Brief History of Wine in California more than two hundred years after Spanish missionaries brought vine cuttings with them from Mexico’s Baja California and established the first of the California missions in San Diego, researchers at Madrid’s National Biotechnical Center, using DNA techniques, have traced those first vines back to a black grape that seems to be a dark-colored relative of the Palomino grape still in use for the production of Sherry. That humble beginning may not seem like it would have much to do with today’s bur- geoning wine industry, but the fact is that the Mission variety became the vine of choice in California as its population grew first through the arrival of trappers and wealthy landowners, then with the small but steady stream of wagon trains that came west out of the country’s heartland and the establishment in the 1840s of the clipper ship trade. By the time the trans- continental railroad was completed in 1869, California’s wine economy had become established, and despite world wars and periods in which the sale of alcohol was banned, the industry hung on and finally exploded into its current shape with the wine boom of the 1970s. Today, the Mission grape is gone, but the wine industry it helped spawn now boasts over a half million acres of wine grapes from one end of the state to the other.

Trentadue History
TRENTADUE HISTORY ARRIVING IN SONOMA COUNTY The Trentadue family arrived in Sonoma County long before the region gained a reputation as the Wine Country. Life-long, hands-on agriculturists, Evelyn and Leo Trentadue contributed significantly to the advancement of their region over the years. In 1959, the Trentadues decided to flee the developers encroaching on their apricot and cherry orchards in Sunnyvale, the area known today around the world as Silicon Valley. To preserve their way of life, these hard-working Italian ranchers purchased 208 acres of land in Sonoma County’s then remote Alexander Valley. There was little market for the region’s dry-farmed apples, prunes, pears, and grapes in the late 1950s, so land was cheap and plentiful. Scores of ranches were for sale but, because it was blessed with an excellent combination of climate, soil, and water, Leo settled on a special piece of property in the heart of the Alexander Valley. Little did he know what this ranch had once been, much less what it was to become. The piece of land, which is now home to Trentadue Winery, has a remarkable history. In 1868, a French botanist named Andrew Bouton established Heart’s Desire Nursery on this excellent site east of the railroad tracks. With a passion for breeding new and improved strains of fruit trees, Bouton devoted himself to plant propagation, becoming a major supplier of young tree stock to orchardists throughout the western United States. His reputation attracted the attention of a young man named Luther Burbank who visited Bouton frequently. Influenced by Bouton, Burbank conducted his own work in nearby Sebastopol and Santa Rosa.

2019 Vintage at Monte Bello Winery Following the dry winter of 2018, the heavy rains of 2019 were welcome. A moderately strong El Nino formed in the eastern Pacific, which intensified storms and directed their energy at California. Monte Bello received sixty-five inches of rain for the season, twice our average amount. It rained often, but not torrentially as the weather systems moved through. It allowed for good absorption into the subsoil avoiding erosion while replenishing underground water reserves. Once spring arrived, there was explosive growth of grass and cover-crop that helped with drawing excess water out of the ground. This was followed by frequent mowing which prevented nutrients being pulled away from the vines. Our Sonoma County vineyards received a larger amount of rain than did Monte Bello. The ground was saturated with water through late spring. Having great drainage in these vineyards was essential for inducing water stress later in the growing season. Once summer arrived, it brought several lengthy heat waves between June and July. This accelerated the growing season and energized the vines into extending their shoots and filling out canopies, growing inches by the day. For most vineyards, flowering occurred during calm weather. Clusters were full and abundant. The merlot parcels at Monte Bello were the only ones that got caught by bad weather during bloom. Their clusters had a lot of shatter resulting in great concentration but unusually low yields. Throughout August and September, despite bursts of heat, cold foggy weather slowed ripening. Our first pick was done on August 23rd, bringing in the old vine carignan from the Evangleho vineyard in Contra Costa County.

ON THE MARKET Our Head Winemaker, John Olney We are pleased to announce that John Olney has been promoted to Head Winemaker and COO at Ridge Vineyards and will oversee all Ridge winemaking operations at both the Monte Bello and Lytton Springs wineries. John joined Ridge twenty-five years ago and spent his first three years at Monte Bello working under Paul Draper. In 1999, he led the construction of Ridge’s new Lytton Springs winery in Healdsburg and was then promoted to Winemaker and Chief Operating Officer of the Lytton Springs facility. John has a wealth of winemaking experience. Very early on, he frequently visited the south of France, where he spent time with his uncle, Richard Olney, the celebrated food and wine writer. Through his uncle’s relationships, John learned firsthand many of the great European winemaking methods and traditions. Later, while attending a language exchange program in Provence, he chose to pursue wine as a career. In 1994, he enrolled in enological studies at the Lycée Viticole in Burgundy. Before joining Ridge, John worked at Kermit SPRING 2021 Lynch Wine Merchant and interned with several European winemakers, including Gérard Chave in the Rhône, Lucien Peyraud at Domaine Tempier, and Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In 2016 John was voted in as a member of Academie Internationale du Vin (AIV). Bell had been working as an assistant winemaker in Marl- borough and looking for a way out, when he met an American harvest intern at neighboring Cloudy Bay winery. When Bell confided his desire to move on, the intern sug- gested he go to the Finger Lakes, because of its potential for produc- ing world-class riesling. Bell took the advice. When he arrived in the Finger Lakes in 1990, he contacted the only company in the region he had heard of: Tay- lor Wine Co. As it happened, Tay- lor was about to go bankrupt, but the receptionist told him that Dr. Frank’s down the road was looking for a winemaker. Bell got the job. WHE N R IDGE V INE YARDS W A S bonded as a commercial winery in the rugged mountains above Cupertino, California in 1962, the expectations for growth were rather low. At the time, winemaker David Bennion and the other three engineers from the Stanford Research Institute, who purchased a segment of the original Monte Bello Ridge property in 1959, had a simple dream of making a world-class Cabernet Sauvignon with fruit grown in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Little would this eclectic group of scientists know that the brand was des- tined for greatness and would eventually attract a cult following that would spread around the entire globe. Along with Bennion, the other future leader of this movement was Paul Draper, a philosophy student-turned-winemaker who was hired by Ridge History of Ridge Vineyards 101 Vineyards in 1969. Flowering was early; the amount of fruit formed was unusually large. We dropped CALIFORNIAALIFORNIA nearly twenty percent of the crop, bringing yields down to ® two tons per acre—and assuring intensity. This was the earliest vintage since 1962. All thirty-three parcels were fermented separately, on their natural yeast; in a return to MONTEMONTE BELLOBELLO methods employed in the sixties and seventies, part of the malolactic took place in barrel. The wine was aged for eighteen months, almost entirely in new, air-dried american oak. Ripe and well-structured, this Monte Bello is among the finest of a great decade. It is approachable as a young wine, and will develop fully over the next fifteen years. GOOSE RIDGE VINEYARDS 2019 Cougar VIII Red Wine GOOSE RIDGE ESTATE VINEYARDS AND WINERY is a family-owned and operated winery dedicated to limited production, handcrafted wines from estate-grown grapes. The Monson family’s vineyard is planted on a south-facing slope in Washington’s Columbia Valley adjacent to Red Mountain that consistently yields rich, ripe grapes. The family has farmed in the Columbia Valley for four decades and is known for their commitment to quality. Goose Ridge Vineyard is built on that tradition. VINEYARD When the family decided to plant grapes on a sun-drenched hill adjacent to Red Mountain, they did so under the guidance of Dr. Walter Clore, considered by many the “father” of the Washington wine industry. Dr. Clore was impressed by the site’s gentle, south-facing slope and the growing area’s warm temperatures. He encouraged the Monsons to plant vineyard rows north-to-south to maximize sun exposure, and he also advised the family to plant the site in small blocks to facilitate estate-grown wines managed for low yields through careful pruning and thinning practices. As a result of the vineyard’s attention to detail, grapes ripen evenly and the wines are consistently ripe, rich, and fruit-forward. VINTAGE The 2019 vintage was surprising and challenging, but also presented wonderful opportunities to make compelling, memorable wines. The winter was initially mild, but late and heavy snowfall delayed the start of the growing season. Spring was moderately cool and wetter than average. Summer was similarly cooler than average with few days exceeding 95'F, even during the typically hot months of July and August.
