  • A California Wine Primer
part one A California Wine Primer Olken_Ch00_FM.indd 1 7/13/10 12:07:51 PM Olken_Ch00_FM.indd 2 7/13/10 12:07:52 PM A Brief History of Wine in California more than two hundred years after Spanish missionaries brought vine cuttings with them from Mexico’s Baja California and established the first of the California missions in San Diego, researchers at Madrid’s National Biotechnical Center, using DNA techniques, have traced those first vines back to a black grape that seems to be a dark-colored relative of the Palomino grape still in use for the production of Sherry. That humble beginning may not seem like it would have much to do with today’s bur- geoning wine industry, but the fact is that the Mission variety became the vine of choice in California as its population grew first through the arrival of trappers and wealthy landowners, then with the small but steady stream of wagon trains that came west out of the country’s heartland and the establishment in the 1840s of the clipper ship trade. By the time the trans- continental railroad was completed in 1869, California’s wine economy had become established, and despite world wars and periods in which the sale of alcohol was banned, the industry hung on and finally exploded into its current shape with the wine boom of the 1970s. Today, the Mission grape is gone, but the wine industry it helped spawn now boasts over a half million acres of wine grapes from one end of the state to the other.

Do you want more? Join us in uncovering new places around the world on: www.111places.com Foreword In all my years living in San Francisco, I have never stopped discover- ing new places, hidden stairways, unexpected vistas, and stories embedded in every crevice. Strolling the city’s rolling terrain brings you face-to-face with these charming details, like the scrollwork on an old Victorian, an overgrown garden of jasmine in a concealed alley, or the lively salsa rhythms drifting out of an open window. For a city that is only seven miles wide and seven miles long, the diversity here is stunning; from musicians, artists, and hippies, to hipsters and entrepreneurs, its population refects every human shape, color, and spirit. It’s not only the people who have defned the neighborhoods, but the land itself: there are 14 hills across which the city rises and falls. In San Francisco, each hill, from Telegraph to Potrero, and every valley, from Noe to Hayes, has its own architecture, its own history, and even its own weather.

  • Colección 2017 Where Bordeaux Meets Mendoza
COLECCIÓN 2017 WHERE BORDEAUX MEETS MENDOZA Following Bordeaux tradition, Colección is our “Second Label” after our Grand Vin. Colección is similar to Grand Vin but less concentrated and with less ageing potential and is therefore friendlier to drink young. In this blend you can taste the concentration and intensity of a Mendoza wine along with the elegance and finesse of a Bordeaux-blend. Technical Data % varieties: 53 % Malbec ; 17% Cabernet Sauvignon ; 15% Petit Verdot ; 12% Syrah ; 4% Merlot Location: Uco Valley, Vista Flores, Tunuyán, Mendoza, Argentina. Alcohol: 13.6% Acidity: 5.17 g/L Residual Sugar: 1.6 g/L pH: 3.80 Dry Extract: 30.24 g/L Production: 13.000 bottles Vintage Characteristics Winter 2016 has been absolutely normal in terms of both temperatures and rainfall though spring showed lower temperatures than usual, especially during bud-break and flower that did affect our yields, especially for Malbec which is more sensitive to cold temperatures. Summer 2017 has been normal with low rainfall and very good thermal amplitude that combined with the low yields, generated an extraordinary accumulation of anthocyanin, especially in Malbec and an optimal phenolic maturation for all our varietals. These conditions produced outstanding wines, with less quantities of Malbec but exceptional characteristics of concentration, complexity and ageing potential. Vineyards Total area: 65 hectares. Area in production: 55 hectares. Altitude: 1000 meters above sea level. Plantation density: : 5500 plants per hectare in vertical trellising system. Yield: 7000 kg per hectare. Harvest: manual in 12 kg boxes. Tasting Note Appearance: intense and attractive red with violet reflection. Wine-Making Aroma: very complex and of great finesse with Once the vats are full, the grapes undergo maceration before the alcoholic spicy notes and ripe plums as well as a certain fermentation occurs.

  • The Mendoza Wine Region. (These Notes Are Compiled and Edited From
The Mendoza Wine Region. (These notes are compiled and edited from various internet sources mostly Wine Searcher and Wine.com) Mendoza Province, responsible for over 70% of the Argentina's wine production, is divided into several distinctive wine making sub-regions, including Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. It is the source of some of the country’s finest wines. Most large wineries are in the provincial capital of Mendoza. For many wine lovers, Mendoza is practically synonymous with Malbec. Originally a Bordelaise variety brought to Argentina by the French in the mid-1800s, here it found success and renown that it never knew in its homeland where a finicky climate gives mixed results. Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir are all widely planted here as well (and sometimes even blended with each other or Malbec). Mendoza's main white varieties include Chardonnay, Torrontés, and Sauvignon Blanc. The pink-skinned grapes of Criolla Grande and Cereza account for more than a quarter of all planting. Criolla is used to produce deeply colored white wine. It is sometimes used to produce a light-colored rosé. The grape is rarely exported outside of Argentina where it is used to produce massive quantities of box and jug wines. Vineyards are planted at some of the highest altitudes in the world, in the eastern foothills of the Andes, in the shadow of Mount Aconcagua, with the average site located 600– 1,100 meters (2,000–3,600 ft) above sea level. Altitude is one of the most important characteristics of the Mendoza terroir.
