Sex and Politics: Delarivier Manley’s New Atalantis Sex and Politics: Delarivier Manley’s New Atalantis Soňa Nováková Charles University, Prague Intellectual women during the Restoration and the Augustan age frequently participated in politics indirectly—by writing political satires and allegories. One of the most famous and influential examples is the Tory propagandist Delarivier Manley (1663-1724). Her writings reflect a self-consciousness about the diverse possibilities of propaganda and public self-representation. This paper focuses on her major and best-known work, The New Atalantis (1709) and reads Manley as an important transitional figure in the history of English political activity through print. Her political writings reflect a new model of political authority—not as divinely instituted and protected by subjects, but rather as open to contest via public representations, a result of the emerging public sphere. In her lifetime, Manley had achieved widespread fame as a writer of political scandal fiction. The New Atalantis, for example, riveted the attention of some of her most acclaimed contemporaries—Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Richard Steele, Jonathan Swift, and Alexander Pope who alluded to it in The Rape of the Lock (Canto III, ll.165-70). Nevertheless, Manley was also widely condemned. Many contemporary and later political opponents of Manley focus mainly on her sexual improprieties (she married her guardian only to discover it was a bigamous marriage, and later lived as mistress with her printer) and her critics disputed -

Gonzales May, 2017 ABSTRACT This dissertation explores amatory fiction as a genre significant to English literary history. I ground the study of amatory fiction in literary history, specifically exploring the ways that amatory fiction participates in the development of the novel. In amatory fiction, female characters express desire in a public setting, a feature that distinguishes amatory fiction from the novel, where characters more often express themselves in private, domestic spaces. By analyzing the various expressions of female desire in the works of Aphra Behn, Delarivier Manley, Eliza Haywood, and Daniel Defoe, I show that female characters are motivated to inhabit public space because they seek to know themselves as sexual, social, and political agents. -

Oral Tradition, 23/2 (2008): 201-217 (Re)presenting Ourselves: Art, Identity, and Status in U.K. Poetry Slam Helen Gregory Introducing Poetry Slam Poetry slam is a movement, a philosophy, a form, a genre, a game, a community, an educational device, a career path, and a gimmick. It is a multi-faced creature that means many different things to many different people. At its simplest, slam is an oral poetry competition in which poets are expected to perform their own work in front of an audience. They are then scored on the quality of their writing and performance by judges who are typically randomly selected members of the audience. The story of slam reaches across more than two decades and thousands of miles. In 1986, at the helm of “The Chicago Poetry Ensemble,” Marc Smith organized the first official poetry slam at the Green Mill in Chicago under the name of the Uptown Poetry Slam (Heintz 2006; Smith 2004). This weekly event still continues today and the Uptown Poetry Slam has become a place of pilgrimage for slam poets from across the United States and indeed the world. While it parallels poetry in remaining a somewhat marginal activity, slam has arguably become the most successful poetry movement of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Its popularity is greatest in its home country, where the annual National Poetry Slam (NPS) can attract audiences in the thousands and where it has spawned shows on television and on Broadway. Beyond this, slam has spread across the globe to countries as geographically and culturally diverse as Australia, Singapore, South Africa, Poland, and the U.K. -

www.galaxyimrj.com Galaxy: International Multidisciplinary Research Journal ISSN 2278 – 9529 Poetic and Social Development in Indian English Poetry Ajit Kumar Indian English poetry emerges as a powerful weapon for world society . In the beginning , it has a big difference being Indian poets in English. The difference like on linguistic, content and skills levels. The journey of Indian literature commences from the social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy who protested firstly against the exploitation of woman and advocated the rights of press in his writings as well as actions and movements. According to M. K. Naik, “Roy wrote A Defense of Hindu Theism which was “the first and original publication in the history”(81). Later on Henry Derozio (1808-31) who wrote first original poetry in English was less social conscious but more patriotic. Derozio and Kashiprasad set the tone for the love of India which was followed by Toru Dutt, R.N. Tagore, Sarojini Naidu, M.M. Dutt, Sri Aurobindo, Kashiprasad Ghosh, Goroo Chand Dutt and R.C. Dutt. Similarly the first quarter of twentieth century followed Romanticism, Victorianism. Poets like ‘Meherji, A.F. Khabardar, N.B. Thadhani, Nizamat Jung, Harendra Nath Chattopadhyaya, and Ananda Acharya exploited Indian and oriental thought in the typical Indian manner’. The second quarter of twentieth century leaded a rich harvest of poets like ‘V.N. Bhushan, S.R. Dongerkery, T.P. Kailasam, N. Krishna Murti and A. Menezes’ continued the humanistic trend while Nolini Kant Gupta, Dilip Kumar Roy, E.L. Vaswani, Nirodvaran K.D. Sethna, Nishi Kanto, and Themis carried forward the tradition of mystical poetry. -

In some sense, the goal of this dissertation is to account for both the effects of and development of this gap in disciplinary history and in the process of doing literary criticism. Yet, if there is any genre of academic writing that is a consistent exception to this rule, it is the acknowledgments: a place where a critic tracks her encounters with institutional life and the unforgettable, invaluable actions of mentors, colleagues, and friends. Such entries are always woefully partial. Still acknowledgments remain the thing that many compose as they walk to and from campus. To imagine the ways we can give thanks to those who made the work possible is to imagine the completion of the work. Without this act of gratitude, the work could not be. I began this project as an undergraduate in the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania. Herman Beavers introduced me to the Southern Agrarians and encouraged me to pursue how that group’s ideas impacted their literature and the literary criticism they would come to develop. -

It would be fruitful to historically review the short stories as well as the novels of both Shanta Devi and Sita Devi to get a critical understanding about the various spheres they touched many of which are still being debated till date. The study may not be able to settle the debates going on for centuries about women emancipation and specially about women's educational development in 20th Century Bengal but will sincerely attempt to help scholars think in a more practical and objective manner .
