BRYANT, JR. We are all here tonight for the same purpose, to honor a man who by his achievements and his stature as a human being, can come closer than anyone else I know to making Kentucky, which is after all a hodge-podge geographically, politically, and c111.lturally, if there ever was one, speak with one voice, say yes to something in unison. It's a cause for both sadness and rejoicing that there are some occasions when more than miles separate the Purchase and the mountains, the Tennessee Ridge and the Ohio River. But Red Warren, as his friends have been calling him now for most of his seventy-five years, miraculously unites Bluegrass and Pennyrile, just as he has miraculously encompassed Tennessee, Louisiana, the Midwest, New England, to say nothing of Europe and especially Italy, and made them, transformed, inhabit a body of fiction and verse in which we detect what Donald Davison, an old friend and Tennessean, was wont to call "the Kentucky voice of Warren." It's a distinctive voice that we Kentuckians respond to, acknowledge, and tonight claim as our own. -

The Seminar was part of the Montgomery Arts Guild, an organization which was active in promoting and sponsoring cultural events. Held during July, the Seminar hosted readings by notable poets, offered creative writing workshops, held creative writing contests, and featured musical performances. -

Billington has announced the appointment of Charles Simic to be the Library’s 15th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry. Simic will take up his duties in the fall, opening the Library’s annual literary series on Oct. 17 with a reading of his work. He also will be a featured speaker at the Library of Congress National Book Festival in the Poetry pavilion on Saturday, Sept. 29, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Simic succeeds Donald Hall as Poet Laureate and joins a long line of distinguished poets who have served in the position, including most recently Ted Kooser, Louise Glück, Billy Collins, Stanley Kunitz, Robert Pinsky, Robert Hass and Rita Dove. -

Avenue South Nashville, Tennessee 37240 Telephone: (615) 322-2807 ALLEN TATE PAPERS Biographical Note John Orley Allen Tate was born near Winchester, Kentucky November 19, 1899. He graduated from Vanderbilt University Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa in 1922. During this time at Vanderbilt he became one of the Fugitive poets who published their magazine The Fugitive during the years 1922-1925. Later he contributed an essay to the Agrarian manifesto I’ll Take My Stand (1930) and in 1936 he was co-editor with Herbert Agar of Who Owns America? He published poetry throughout his long career and was an accomplished man of letters writing one novel The Fathers (1938), criticism, and biographies.Tate was also the editor at The Sewanee Review from 1944-46. He received many awards for his poetry including the Bollingen Prize in 1956 and held the Chair of Poetry at the Library of Congress in 1943-44. Allen Tate was also a teacher with appointments at among others the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina, Princeton, New York University, and the University of Minnesota where he taught from 1951 until his retirement in 1968. He was married twice to the writer Caroline Gordon from 1924 to 1959. They had a daughter Nancy born in 1924. After his divorce from Caroline Gordon in 1959 he married poet Isabella Gardner. And after his divorce from Gardner in 1966 he married his former student at Minnesota Helen Heinz. -

By PAUL KINGSBURY, BA’80 The thorny legacy of Vanderbilt’s Fugitives and Agrarians Pride and Prejudice t’s one of the most famous and cherished photographs in Vanderbilt’s history. Allen Tate, Merrill Moore, Robert Penn Warren, John Crowe Ransom, Donald Davidson. Five balding white men, dressed impeccably in suits and ties, are seated outdoors, Iobviously posed by photographer Joe Rudis to appear as if lost in con- versation. Despite the artifice, the subjects seem relaxed and even playful, what with Moore practically sitting on Tate’s lap, Warren lean- ing in as if to insert a word edgewise, and the entire group looking to Allen Tate as if expecting a clever remark. It was a happy moment for the old friends. It was 1956, and after three decades of being ignored by the University, the Fugitives had returned to campus in glory for a colloquium devoted to their literary work. In some sense, the goal of this dissertation is to account for both the effects of and development of this gap in disciplinary history and in the process of doing literary criticism. Yet, if there is any genre of academic writing that is a consistent exception to this rule, it is the acknowledgments: a place where a critic tracks her encounters with institutional life and the unforgettable, invaluable actions of mentors, colleagues, and friends. Such entries are always woefully partial. Still acknowledgments remain the thing that many compose as they walk to and from campus. To imagine the ways we can give thanks to those who made the work possible is to imagine the completion of the work. Without this act of gratitude, the work could not be. I began this project as an undergraduate in the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania. Herman Beavers introduced me to the Southern Agrarians and encouraged me to pursue how that group’s ideas impacted their literature and the literary criticism they would come to develop. -

It takes us on voyages with poetic (1911–1979) devices such as imagery, metaphor, rhythm, and rhyme. Although poetry is, perhaps wrongly, often 1952 seen as an exclusive domain of a cultured minority, many writers and readers of WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS (1883–1963) poetry oppose this stereotype. There will likely always be debates about how 1956–1958 transparent, how easy to understand, poetry should be, and much poetry, by its RANDALL JARRELL very nature, will always be esoteric. Classic Poetry Series Allen Tate - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Allen Tate(19 November 1899 - 9 February 1979) John Orley Allen Tate was an American poet, essayist, social commentator, and Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1943 to 1944. <b>Life</b> Tate was born near Winchester, Kentucky to John Orley Tate, a businessman, and Eleanor Parke Custis Varnell. In 1916 and 1917 Tate studied the violin at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He began attending Vanderbilt University in 1918, where he met fellow poet <a href=" In 1924, Tate moved to New York City where he met poet <a href=" Just before leaving for Europe in 1928, Tate described himself to John Gould Fletcher as "an enforced atheist". Later, he told Fletcher, "I am an atheist, but a religious one — which means that there is no organization for my religion." He regarded secular attempts to develop a system of thought for the modern world as misguided. "Only God," he insisted, "can give the affair a genuine purpose." In his essay "The Fallacy of Humanism" (1929), he criticized the New Humanists for creating a value system without investing it with any identifiable source of authority. "Religion is the only technique for the validation of values," he wrote. Already attracted to Roman Catholicism, he deferred converting. Louis D. Rubin, Jr. observes that Tate may have waited "because he realized that for him at this time it would be only a strategy, an intellectual act". Tate and Gordon were divorced in 1945 and remarried in 1946.
