A few quick notes …

1) If you borrowed High Holiday Prayer Books (Machzorim) for your use at home and have not already done so, please be sure to return them to the NHC Office so that they may be checked off, sanitized and stored for next year.

2) If you pre-register for any of our live (in-person) services, please be sure to arrive at the prior to the start of services, as the outside door is kept closed and locked during the service to help ensure the safety of the attendees.

3) If you haven’t already sent in your High Holiday Pledge cards, we ask that you please do so at your earliest convenience.

4) NHC has established on YouTube, a Nanuet Hebrew Center “channel” where you will be able to view many of our NHC events. Some of what is currently posted on this “channel” are recordings of this past week’s Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah services, a wonderful video on our NHC 5781 / 2020 “Wall of Remembrance, and short videos introducing Zachary Spiegel (NHC Men’s Club Youth of the Year) and David Rubinstein (NHC Men’s Club Man of the Year). ➔ As a reminder, any time you are in the synagogue, it is required that you properly wear a mask, and maintain social distancing. Please see illustration below as to how your mask must be worn. (Note – if you forget to bring your mask, one will be provided.) Thank you.

SUKKOT: The holiday has been blessed with many beautiful laws & customs: a. the recitation of Hallel, b. (welcoming our ancestors as honored guests) c. reading the book of Kohelet & d. of course, blessing & waving the Arba’ah Minim - the 4 species. e. The most basic mitzvah is dwelling in a sukkah . But why do we sit in the sukkah?

Here are many wonderful answers: 1. Thanksgiving for the Harvest 2. Historical Link to Ancestors, God 3. Remembering the “Bad Old Days” 4. A Lesson in Humility 5. Increasing Our Faith 6. Universal Peace 7. Remembering the Less Fortunate Over the course of the holiday, we hope that you make the connection to all these ideas through our services & programs.

Please review the attached info sheet. We would appreciate you sharing this information wherever you can: send it in a newsletter, post it on your website, or talk about it in your Zoom meetings.

• A Message from our friends at Helping Hands for the Homeless of Rockland:

Dear Friends of Helping Hands, during this difficult time of social distancing, the Rockland Interfaith Breakfast Program has come up with a creative solution to serve our community, while ensuring that everyone is safe. Instead of a sit-down community breakfast, we have modified our menu so that we can provide our guests with a hot, bagged breakfast and the usual sandwich lunch to take away with them. We understand that many volunteers are wary of venturing out, but there are numerous ways you can help:

- Donate individual water bottles – which we provide with both breakfast and lunch. - Make sandwiches at home. We will deliver the sandwich makings and pick them up from your home. - Donate pastries, dessert items, and/or loaves of bread. - Work in the kitchen with a small crew of volunteers (well under 10!) to put meals together. Donations can be brought to the back door of the Church of the Nazzarene, 11 Church Street, Spring Valley, between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. If you would like us to pick these items up, please contact us by e-mail at [email protected] or by calling 845-356-0100. NHC is proud of it’s long-time relationship with Helping Hands, with Rabbi Kurland serving on their board for more than 15 years. Please consider, if you are able, to help support this fine organization with a financial donation – no matter what the size: Helping Hands of Rockland, PO Box 240, Nyack, NY 10960 Please click here for an article on “Judaism and the Homeless”: https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/judaism-and-the-homeless • We are honored that David Rubinstein will be NHC's Man of the Year recipient at this year's Hudson Valley Region of Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs Annual Awards Dinner. We also are especially honored that Zachary Spiegel will be NHC's Youth of the Year recipient at the Federation's dinner. Please note that this event – originally scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd has been rescheduled to Sunday, November 15th as an online Zoom webinar due to Coronavirus. Please click here for details: http://www.nanuethc.org/wp- content/uploads/2020/07/2020-Mens-Club-MOTY-Zoom-Reception-Flyer-with-NHC-Honorees-11- 15-20.pdf The NHC Man of the Year honor also coincides with NHC’s annual Men’s Club “Man of the Year” Edmund I. Karp Memorial Award, “in recognition of outstanding service to Judaism and the Community.” This award, established in 1966 and in recognition of his achievements, was named after the late Edmund Karp, an influential “charter” member of NHC. He was a life member of the Board, very charitable, and as a professional engineer, played an important part in the design of NHC’s original structure on Middletown Road in Nanuet. • We are honored that Helene Kornstein will be NHC’s honoree at this year’s Metro North Region of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism Torah Fund Dinner. Please note, this event – originally scheduled for Wednesday, May 20th is being postponed. New date TBA. • Attention those 70½ and older who are forced to take their “RMD” (Required Minimum Distribution) from an IRA Account: Instead of having the RMD push you into a higher tax bracket (and potentially adding penalties or surcharges against Social Security and Medicare Payments), please ask your tax accountant about a “QCD” (Qualified Charitable Donation), which is a tax free annual gift (up to $100,000) to a charitable organization such as NHC. This QCD would help offset satisfying your RMD, potentially lowering your taxable annual income (and possibly your tax bracket) while at the same time greatly helping Nanuet Hebrew Center

We are excited to introduce Makom - a Place for Learning

Makom means “Place” in Hebrew and for our children, it will be the place for them to learn, to gather, and to grow.

Makom is the “Place” where our kids will acquire the knowledge and skills to be adult and engage with our tradition in a meaningful way.

Makom will be the “Place” for our children.

Operating in partnership with Montebello Jewish Center (MJC), we have created this new educational opportunity for our youth. Our joint Makom religious school will offer the Greater Rockland Community innovative curriculum - to enrich and challenge our children - from it’s free Pre-K and Kindergarten programs, up through Bar/Bat Mitzvah age.

We also are thrilled to welcome Rebecca Bernstein as our new principal for Makom, Together with Rebecca and our excellent teachers, and with consultation from Rabbi Kurland (NHC) and Rabbi Finkelstein (MJC), Makom will definitely be the "Place" for our children to be.

Please contact Nanuet Hebrew Center (845-708-9181 / [email protected]) or Montebello Jewish Center (845-357-2430 or [email protected]) for more details!
