California 90077 Extent: 20,479 digital files Location: Digital copies of the physical files are housed at the Ostrow Library of the American Jewish University. Physical files have been destroyed. Abstract: The Louis Shub Documentation Center at the American Jewish University is a collection of thousands of articles from various newspapers and periodicals covering a range of subjects. Gathered by Dr. Shub, the former library director of the University of Judaism, the collection was used by students to research subjects such as Israeli and Jewish figures, Foreign Policy, Global Jewish Communities, Israel, the Middle East and many other issues and subjects. The importance of this collection is the juxtaposing of articles from major papers with those of small local papers both covering the same event. Language: Materials are in English and Hebrew Administrative Information Access: This collection is open for research with permission from the Ostrow Library staff. Accruals: No further materials are expected for this collection. Conditions of Use Preferred Citation: [Identification of item], Guide to the Louis Shub Documentation Center at the American Jewish University, American Jewish University, Bel-Air, CA 90077. Acquisition Information: Collected by Dr. Shub since 1940 for personal use and for the Ostrow Library Scope and Content The Shub Documentation Center was created by Ostrow Library’s first director, Louis Shub. The collection began as a personal hobby of Dr. Shub when he was with the American Jewish Committee in 1940. Once opened at the University of Judaism, this news archive allowed students to research articles from newspapers and periodicals from the second half of the 20th century. Areas covered are Israel and the Middle East, Global Jewish community life world wide, Foreign Policy, Israeli and Jewish personalities and issues such as church and state. The beauty of this collection is that under any given topic, one is as likely to find an article from a major newspaper next to another article on the same subject from a local community press. All of the thousands of articles were indexed lovingly by hand by Dr. Shub before the widespread use of computers and the internet. Thanks to the generosity of the Shub family, a major portion of this archive has been digitized and is now available to researchers visiting the new Bel and Jack Ostrow Academic Library and the Burton Sperber Community Library. The Documentation Center consists of over 170 drawers and thousands of folders. In 2010, The Ostrow Library digitized these records, and the collection now consists of 20,479 digital files organized in twenty series. Organization: The collection is organized in 20 series, with subseries when needed. 1. 1. Aliyah 2. 2. Authors 3. 3. Begin Sadat 1977 4. 4. Egypt Israel 1978 5. 5. Foreign Policy 6. 6. edited by Rainer Huhle HUMAN RIGHTS AND HISTORY A CHALLENGE FOR EDUCATION edited by Rainer Huhle H UMAN The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Genocide Convention of 1948 were promulgated as an unequivocal R response to the crimes committed under National Socialism. About the Research This book reviews the struggle for hegemony in Jerusalem between secular and ultra-orthodox (haredi) Jews. It examines the democratic deficit in urban politics formed by the rise of the haredi minority to power, and proposes ways to rectify this deficit. The study addresses the following questions: What are the characteristics of the urban democratic deficit? How did the haredi minority become a leading political force in the city? What are the implications of the democratic deficit from the perspective of the various cultural groups? What can be done in view of the fact that the non-haredi population is not only under-represented but also feels threatened and prejudiced by urban politics initiated by the city council? About the Floersheimer Institute for Policy Studies In recent years the importance of policy-oriented research has been increasingly acknowledged. Dr. Stephen H. Floersheimer initiated the establishment of a research institute that would concentrate on studies of long- range policy issues.

Cambridge University Press 978-1-107-01409-1 - The Origins of Israeli Mythology: Neither Canaanites nor Crusaders David Ohana Frontmatter More information The Origins of Israeli Mythology We claim that Zionism as a meta-narrative has been formed through contradiction to two alternative models: the Canaanite and crusader narratives. These narratives are the most daring and heretical assaults on Israeli-Jewish identity, which is umbilically connected to Zionism. The Israelis, according to the Canaanite narrative, are from this place and belong only here; according to the crusader narrative, they are from another place and belong there. On the one hand, the mytho- logical construction of Zionism as a modern crusade describes Israel as a western colonial enterprise planted in the heart of the East and alien to the area, its logic, and its peoples, whose end must be degen- eration and defeat. On the other hand, the nativist construction of Israel as neo-Canaanism, which defined the nation in purely geo- graphical terms as an imagined native community, demands break- ing away from the chain of historical continuity. Those are the two greatest anxieties that Zionism and Israel needed to encounter and answer forcefully. The Origins of Israeli Mythology seeks to examine the intellectual archaeology of Israeli mythology as it reveals itself through the Canaanite and crusader narratives. Professor David Ohana studies modern European and Jewish history. His affiliations have included Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Sorbonne, Harvard University, and the University of California, Berkeley. He is a full professor of History at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel.

Samuel Neaman Eretz Israel from Inside and Out Samuel Neaman Reflections In this book, the author Samuel (Sam) Neaman illustrates a part of his life story that lasted over more that three decades during the 20th century - in Eretz Israel, France, Syria, in WWII battlefronts, in Great Britain, the U.S., Canada, Mexico and in South American states. This is a life story told by the person himself and is being read with bated breath, sometimes hard to believe but nevertheless utterly true. Neaman was born in 1913, but most of his life he spent outside the country and the state he was born in ERETZ and for which he fought and which he served faithfully for many years. Therefore, his point of view is from both outside and inside and apart from • the love he expresses towards the country, he also criticizes what is going ERETZ ISRAELFROMINSIDEANDOUT here. In Israel the author is well known for the reknowned Samuel Neaman ISRAEL Institute for Advanced Studies in Science and Technology which is located at the Technion in Haifa. This institute was established by Neaman and he was directly and personally involved in all its management until he passed away a few years ago.
