February is Hamantashen Baking month. You could be in pictures! Only two more chances! Greetings to all. We have already begun having fun baking our delicious Hamantashen. Last year was a big success and we can do even better this year. We meet at the AKSE kitchen. Any amount of time you can donate will be greatly appreciated. Men who enjoy baking and schmoozing are also welcome to help out in this yearly tradition. The Hamantashen we make are given out to the congregation at the Megillah Readings. They are sold as an important part of Sisterhood’s fundraising for the synagogue and an assortment is included in each Shalach Manot Purim Greeting bag.

February 1, 9 am to about 1 pm February 15, 9 am to about 1pm

If possible, please email me if you think you will be able to attend. You are always welcome to come without advance notice. My email address is [email protected] Thanks in advance, Sharon Berry

AKSE SISTERHOOD INVITES YOU TO SEND PURIM GREETINGS and SHALACH MANOT

Purim comes early in March this year. March 4th will be the first Megillah reading. We hope you will participate in the mitzvah of sending gifts of food and drink to friends and relatives by participating in the Sisterhood Purim Greetings Program. Here’s how it works. Your name will be included on the card sending Purim Greetings to your recipients. The card will be accompanied by a generous assortment of traditional Purim treats! The recipients will be notified in advance that they are receiving a bag of treats and will get a list of who sent them the greeting and treats. They may pick up their greetings at AKSE on Wednesday, March 4, after the Megillah reading and for the next 3 days. All unpicked up bags may be donated to a deserving charity. The donation is $6 for individual greetings sent to AKSE Members or Staff. $15 for individual greetings to Non-Members (Please arrange to pick up their special treats to deliver as they may not be coming to our Purim services.) LARGE ORDER SPECIAL PRICING (available for AKSE member or Staff recipients only): 10 greetings for $50 ($5.00 each) 20 greetings for $90 ($4.50each) 30 greetings for $120 ($4.00 each) 40 greetings for $140 ($3.50 each) 50 greetings for $150 ($3.00 each)

****Introducing a lower donation amount to give to all members and staff. The new amount is $180 instead of $250. We are hoping that more people will participate in sending greetings to everyone. Please consider this level of contribution. Last year we had 20 donations of $250 for this special goal. This year we would like to exceed last year by having at least 30 participate for $180. It’s a wonderful way to share the joy of Purim with all of our AKSE families. Please note that regardless of the number of greeters, each recipient family or individual will receive ONE assortment of Purim treats.

TO SEND PURIM GREETINGS:

Please submit the complete information on your own paper either typed or neatly printed to AKSE Sisterhood, Attn: Sharon Berry, or email your list to [email protected] and submit check to office prior to February 18th to allow enough time to prepare the Purim Greeting for each recipient. Here’s what we need: 1) Name of Sender (As you would like your name to appear on the card, you can also add a short personal greeting; example: “Wishing you all a Happy Purim” ) 2) Your phone number and email address if you have one. We will call or email you if there are questions. 3) Name of each recipient. Please indicate whether each recipient is an AKSE member, AKSE staff member, or non-member. For non-members, please include a phone number and email address, if available. 4) Indicate the cost of each order as priced above and total the order. 5) Enclose check made payable to AKSE Sisterhood and include the check with your order. Your order will be confirmed by phone or email when received by Sharon Berry. (Please allow one week for order confirmation.)

Thank you all in advance for your participation in this mitzvah and helping Sisterhood contribute to our synagogue. Last year we not only contributed $10,000, we also bought a new refrigerator and freezer.

WHAT'S COOKING IN YOUR KITCHEN?

Dear Friends, it is really cold outside! How about a bowl of oatmeal to warm you? My husband and I tried Amish Baked Oatmeal with Blueberries several weeks ago and found it to be delicious. It was a great way to start the day on a cold morning. It is easy to make and tasty. What I liked best about the recipes is that there are so many op- tions for your favorite fruit and/ or nuts to spice this recipe up. If you try this recipe, please be creative.

Baked Oatmeal

2 2/3 cup old fashioned oats 3 cups milk 2/3 cup brown sugar (can use Splenda brown sugar) 2 Tablespoons butter or margarine, melted 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt Additional milk, if desired See list of options to make this different every time.

Heat oven to 350 in 2 quart casserole, mix oats, milk, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon and salt

Bake uncovered 40-45 minutes or until most liquid is absorbed. Use additional milk when serving if de- sired.

Options for a variety of flavors of oatmeal:

Add 2 teaspoons of vanilla to the unbaked oatmeal mixture after layering the bottom of the pan with sliced ripe bananas . Add any berry or your favorite nuts for variety.

Add your favorite chopped dried fruit.

You can top the oatmeal with yogurt instead of milk.

Try adding a beaten raw egg to oatmeal mixture to bake in some extra protein.

You can use 2 cups chopped apples and 1/2 cup walnut pieces for an Apple Pie flavor. Trying apple pie spice instead of cinnamon might be a nice spicy flavor.

It has been suggested to use apples or fruit from pie filling (discard the sauce, just use the fruit) for softer apples.

As my Mom-Mom used to say, “If you put good things in it will taste good!" It seems to me with this recipe you cannot go wrong. I hope you try this, love it and keep your tummy warm all winter long!

Until Next Time...... Meryl

We Invite You to Sponsor a Shabbat Kiddush

Dear Fellow AKSE Congregants:

The members of the Kiddush Fund Committee invite every family to sponsor at least one regular Shab- bat Kiddush every year for $36. Your name will be posted in the Shabbat newsletter as the sponsor of the Kiddush that morning. Please think of a Simcha that is coming up that you would like to share with your congregational family such as a birthday, anniversary, retirement or any other happy occasion. Our goal is for each family to annually show support for the Kiddush fund which enables us to come together to celebrate and share happy occasions on Shabbat.

Please contact the office at 302-762-2705 to find out if your desired Shabbat date is available for spon- sorship. Please contact Judy Berlin at 302-762-3649 to discuss your special requests. Additional items like a special cake or kugels can be included for an additional charge. Thank you in advance,

So many ways to Purchase Gift Cards!

1) Want to buy gift cards but are not able to get to the synagogue? No problem! Just call the synagogue office, tell them what you need, and they will mail the cards to you. You will be required to pay for them, by check, as soon as possible, but no later than seven (7) days after placing your order It's that simple!

You might be asking .... why can't I just use my credit card to purchase gift cards and not have to write a check? Answer: The synagogue needs to pay a service charge of up to 4% on credit card transactions, so, as you can see, this would eat into the 5% we would earn on the sale of gift cards.

We are implementing this on a trial basis. We feel that this is a process we must try, to make it easier for AKSE Congregants to obtain gift cards. The synagogue will assume the liability on the remote possibility that gift cards are not received.

2) Come to the synagogue during normal business hours and purchase them directly from our friendly office staff

3) Come to the synagogue on Sunday mornings when the gift shop is open and purchase directly from Dianne Seidel.

4) Call AKSE Members:

Marty Zukoff—302 478 4734 Chalfonte Dianne Seidel 302 479 0490 Green Acres

GIFT CARDS AVAILABLE: ShopRite, Superfresh, ACME, Super G ($50, $100 denominations) Walgreens ($100 denomination)

Since we all make purchases from supermarkets and drug stores, there is really no reason why we should not be able to get greater than 90% participation from AKSE Congregants. There is absolutely no cost to you, and a great way to support one of AKSE's ongoing fundraising projects.

To order your gift cards: Call the synagogue office at (302) 762-2705, or email your order to the office at [email protected]

For any questions about this program, please contact Marty Zukoff, at [email protected], or (302) 478-4734
