  • Beginnings and Endings in Films, Film and Film Studies
Beginnings and Endings in Films, Film and Film Studies Beginnings and Endings in Films, Film and Film Studies, University of Warwick, 13th June 2008 A report by Martin Zeller, University of York, UK This conference, organised by Tom Hughes and James MacDowell (both of University of Warwick), examined the beginnings and endings of individual films and structures of beginnings and endings in films more generally, as well as notions of beginning and ending in film studies as a discipline. With such a wide remit it is not surprising that links between the various presentations were sometimes difficult to establish. However, the wide variety of approaches to the topic ensured lively discussions. The tone for the day was set by the keynote paper delivered by Warwick's own V. F. Perkins. Examining beginnings and endings in the genre of 'multi-story' (or portmanteau) movies, Perkins elucidated the various methods used to make the author the focus of these multi-stranded narratives. Drawing on the literary cachet of their source texts, Quartet, Full House and Le Plaisir make Maugham, O. Henry and Maupassant the respective loci around which their stories revolve. Pointing out that authorial intrusions were, with the exception of Le Plaisir, used only at the beginnings of such films, Perkins suggested the possibility of a largely unexplored narrative technique available in returning to the author at the close of a film. However, it was Professor Perkin's call for, 'an aesthetics of the quite good, of the satisfactorily effective, as well as the extremes: the abject and the sublime,' that seemed to resonate most with the delegates and to become a touchstone for the day's later discussions.

  • VERBAL BEHAVIOR by B. F. Skinner William James Lectures Harvard
VERBAL BEHAVIOR by B. F. Skinner William James Lectures Harvard University 1948 To be published by Harvard University Press. Reproduced by permission of B. F. Skinner† Preface In 1930, the Harvard departments of psychology and philosophy began sponsoring an endowed lecture series in honor of William James and continued to do so at irregular intervals for nearly 60 years. By the time Skinner was invited to give the lectures in 1947, the prestige of the engagement had been established by such illustrious speakers as John Dewey, Wolfgang Köhler, Edward Thorndike, and Bertrand Russell, and there can be no doubt that Skinner was aware that his reputation would rest upon his performance. His lectures were evidently effective, for he was soon invited to join the faculty at Harvard, where he was to remain for the rest of his career. The text of those lectures, possibly somewhat edited and modified by Skinner after their delivery, was preserved as an unpublished manuscript, dated 1948, and is reproduced here. Skinner worked on his analysis of verbal behavior for 23 years, from 1934, when Alfred North Whitehead announced his doubt that behaviorism could account for verbal behavior, to 1957, when the book Verbal Behavior was finally published, but there are two extant documents that reveal intermediate stages of his analysis. In the first decade of this period, Skinner taught several courses on language, literature, and behavior at Clark University, the University of Minnesota, and elsewhere. According to his autobiography, he used notes from these classes as the foundation for a class he taught on verbal behavior in the summer of 1947 at Columbia University.

the frontiers collection the frontiers collection Series Editors: A.C. Elitzur M.P. Silverman J. Tuszynski R. Vaas H.D. Zeh The books in this collection are devoted to challenging and open problems at the forefront of modern science, including related philosophical debates. In contrast to typical research monographs, however, they strive to present their topics in a manner accessible also to scientifically literate non-specialists wishing to gain insight into the deeper implications and fascinating questions involved. Taken as a whole, the series reflects the need for a fundamental and interdisciplinary approach to modern science. Furthermore, it is intended to encourage active scientists in all areas to ponder over important and perhaps controversial issues beyond their own speciality. Extending from quantum physics and relativity to entropy, consciousness and complex systems – the Frontiers Collection will inspire readers to push back the frontiers of their own knowledge. Issue #72 Summer / Fall 2008 Lars Bloch Interview (part 2) A Man, a Colt The MGM Rolling Road Show Latest DVD Reviews WAI! #72 THE SWINGIN’ DOORS April and May were months that took a number of well known actors of the Spaghetti western genre: Jacques Berthier, Robert Hundar, John Phillip Law and Tano Cimarosa were all well known names in the genre. Of course we should expect as much since these people are now well into their 70s and even 80s. Still in our minds they are young vibrant actors who we see over and over again on video and DVD. It’s hard to realize that it’s been 40+ years since Sergio Leone kicked off the Spaghetti western craze and launched a world wide revolution in film that we still see influencing films today. Hard to believe Clint Eastwood turned 78 on May 30th. Seems like only yesterday he was the ‘Man with No Name’ and starring in the first of the Leone films that launched the genre. Remember when Clint was criticized so badly as an actor and for the films he appeared in during the 60s and 70s. Now he’s revered in Hollywood because he’s outlived his critics. I guess we recognized a real star long before the critics did. A great idea came to Tim League’s mind in the launching of the “Rolling Road Show”, where films are actually shown where they were filmed. I wasn’t able to travel to Spain to see the Dollars trilogy but we have a nice review of the films and the experience by someone who was there.
