THE SKAGIT VALLEY COLLEGE PREMIER MAGAZINE • FALL 2020 CONNECTED FOR SUCCESS

INCLUDES: SVC FOUNDATION 2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT Focused on Equity: Access • Achievement • Community FOCUSED ON EQUITY Access • Achievement • Community

ince its founding year in 1926, Skagit Valley College faculty and staff have eagerly welcomed students to campus each Fall Quarter. Throughout our history, our S ongoing dedication to providing access to higher education for all who seek a better future is a commitment of which I am incredibly proud. Although recent months have been challenging with COVID-19, serving students in Skagit, Island, and San Juan counties has continued without hesitation. The health and safety of the SVC community remain our top priority, so we are adapting our instruction, services, and resources to meet students where they are now. In preparing to welcome students for fall classes, we did so with our Strategic Plan Core Themes of Equity in Access, Achievement, and Community at the center of our work. While most classes are being offered online, we are providing limited in-person opportunities in select Science and Workforce classes. Additionally, we have created many new wrap-around services through a lens of equity. They have been designed to reduce barriers for our diverse student populations, create a community where everyone belongs, and provide caring support to help every student succeed. This edition of Currents will also showcase the great work of our SVC Foundation in their Annual Report to you. Many students reach their educational goals because of the leadership, support, and generosity you extend. Your gifts — whether they support scholarships, emergency funding, or instructional enhancements — continue to make a big difference in our students’ lives. On behalf of the SVC Board of Trustees, SVC Foundation Board of Governors, faculty, staff, and students, thank you for joining our commitment to offering higher education to all who seek a better future. By working together, we are helping students achieve their educational goals. Sincerely,

Dr. Thomas A. Keegan President

SEnjoying a gourmet lunch while docked at a picturesque marina. Experiencing a sunset dinner after a day of epic sailing. Life on the water is a huge draw for passionate boating enthusiasts, as well as for those who dream of a career in the marine trades. As the West Coast’s premier program, Marine Maintenance Technology at SVC is helping make those dreams a reality by preparing students for rewarding careers in the recreational boat, ship repair, and maintenance industries. Students power up their skills at the Marine Technology Center in Anacortes, , in three areas: propulsion, vessel systems, and composites. Training with a faculty of industry experts, students learn in a facility with easy access to local marinas and support of industry partners. In addition to job training, Cruiser’s College at SVC is designed for boaters who want to keep their vessel ship-shape and learn do-it-yourself techniques taught by marine pros, Department Chair Mike Beemer and Instructor Matt Mardesich. Employers in this high-demand field expect their workers will have a blend of industry-focused skills and certifications. To help meet this need, SVC has increased program capacity, offering small class sizes, personal instruction, scholarships, and technology support to keep students on track. In June, the program’s Associate in Applied Science degree was endorsed by Career Launch, a collaboration of industry, labor, education, and community leaders. Also, SVC received a Career Launch enrollment allocation from the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges that provides $480,000 over five years to support Learn more at: and grow enrollment.
