5 Honorary Degree Recipient Katie Hood

KATIE HOOD is Chief Executive Officer of One Love, the nation’s leading educator of young people on the topic of healthy and unhealthy relationships, as both a primary prevention strategy for relationship abuse and as an investment in the relationship health of the next generation.

Prior to joining One Love, Hood was Chief Executive Officer at the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, where for nine years she worked to drive research progress toward a cure. She also worked as a philanthropic consultant and served as a visiting lecturer at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy. Before discovering her passion for philanthropy, she held positions at both Goldman Sachs and Bain & Company.

A dynamic speaker and frequent panelist, Hood has appeared at Aspen Ideas: Health, Milken Global Conference, Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Conference and The Nantucket Project. Her 2019 TED talk, “The Difference between Healthy and Unhealthy Love,” captured more than 8 million views.

Hood received her bachelor’s degree in public policy from Duke University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She lives outside of New York City with her husband, four children, and two dogs.

6 Alumni Citation Recipient Christine Lincoln ’00

CHRISTINE LINCOLN is an internationally award- winning author and motivational speaker. Her stories have appeared on stage at Symphony Space and Word Theatre, read and performed by Don Cheadle, Gary Dourdan, and Lizan Mitchell. Her short stories have appeared in various literary journals such as Pleiades Magazine and the Paris Review.

Lincoln is Poet Laureate Emeritus of York Pennsylvania. During her service to the City of York she created a writing group at a local domestic violence safehouse where she helped survivors of trauma and abuse explore poetry as a means to healing. She also created “Writers Voice,” a monthly column for the York Daily Record that featured emerging writers and visual artists throughout South Central Pennsylvania.

Christine has traveled throughout the and the world, including South Africa where she was the first author to represent the United States in South Africa’s annual Year of the Writer Celebration. She has appeared on NPR, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and has been featured as a “Phenomenal Woman” in O: The Oprah Magazine.

Lincoln’s life motto is this: you only have this one wild beautiful life, so live it like you mean it. Currently, Lincoln divides her time between Ghana, Africa and the United States, working as a writer, speaker, teacher, artist, community leader and activist. And primarily this is how Lincoln sees herself, as an artist activist who uses every talent and gift like a superhero, like Princess Diana of Themyscira. But, instead of using a magic lasso and invisible plane Lincoln uses words to save herself and hopefully the world.

23 Presidential Chain and Medallion The Presidential Chain and Medallion was a gift of Mr. Roger Kelly and Mr. Thomas S. Nichols, members of the Board of Visitors and Governors, in 1971. Composed of a medallion and links of sterling silver, the Chain was executed by the late Gabriel Swart, a noted silver engraver of Washington, D.C. The medallion features a likeness of Dr. William Smith, first President of the College, encircled by star-like designs with centers of inlaid black onyx stone representing the Black-eyed Susan, the Maryland state flower.

The reverse side of the medallion bears the College seal. Supporting the medallion are alternating square and circular links, nine on each side. Thirteen of these eighteen links are inscribed with the names of the Presidents of Washington College and their dates of office, from Colin Ferguson, second President, to Kurt M. Landgraf, twenty-ninth President.

The Academic Attire The history of academic dress reaches back into the early days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra (Portugal) wear gowns. Gowns have identifying characteristics. Sleeves are pointed on the bachelor’s degree gown, oblong on the master’s, and bell-shaped on the doctor’s. Full-length velvet panels also appear on the doctor’s gown: these may be in black, or if the wearer prefers, the color associated with the department of learning.

Hoods denote scholarly achievement. The lining is dyed in the official colors of the college or university where its wearer earned the degree. The color of the velvet represents the department of learning: Arts, Letters, and Humanities-white; Economics-copper; Education-light blue; Music-pink; Philosophy-dark blue; Physical Education-sage green; Science-gold-yellow; Social Science-citron.

The Mace Originally a Medieval weapon, the mace has become a symbol of high office and is traditionally carried by the Marshal who precedes the President in academic processions. The Washington College mace is heavily worked with silver and contains six matched garnets mounted in a circle around the silver head. Historical insignia are engraved on the head in three silver rings on the ebony staff. On the head are the seal of Kent County, the seal of the College, a silhouette of George Washington, and Washington’s coat of arms. In a circle on the head, under the garnets, is inscribed “Washington College, Founded in Chestertown, Kent County, Maryland, 1782.” The upper ring on the staff bears engravings of the book of learning and an astrolabe. The second ring depicts the terrestrial globe and Washington’s shield, and the bottom one bears a flaming torch on one side, matched on the other by a crest and motto of Dr. William Smith, founder of the College. The donor’s name, Henry Powell Hopkins, appears on the bottom. International Flags

Washington College fosters an international community of learning. Decorating the stage on the campus lawn are flags representing the countries of the students in our graduating class. Among the Class of 2021 are students from Bolivia, China, Colombia, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Iraq, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Omoria, Philippines, and Vietnam. The international flags lining the brick walkway represent the home countries of previous Washington College graduates. A Note on Photography
