The great churches of Kievan Rus', built after the adoption of christianity in 988, were the first examples of monumental architecture in the East Slavic region. The architectural style of the Kievan state, which quickly established itself, was strongly influenced by Byzantine architecture. Early Eastern Orthodox churches were mainly built from wood, with their simplest form known as a cell church. Major cathedrals often featured many small domes, which has led some art historians to infer how the pagan Slavic temples may have appeared.

    Donato d'Angelo Bramante Born in : Urbino, 1444 - Dead in : 1514 La "Haute Renaissance" Donato Bramante is an Italian architect, who introduced the Early Renaissance style to Milan and the High Renaissance style to Rome, where his most famous design was St. Peter's Basilica. Bramante was born in a very small place near Urbino, where in the 1460s Francesco Laurana was adding to Federico da Montefeltro's ducal palace an arcaded courtyard and other features that seemed to have the true ring of a reborn Antiquity. Biography About 1474 Bramante moved to Milan, a city with a deep Gothic architecture tradition, and built several churches in the new Antique taste. The Duke, Ludovico Sforza, made him virtually his court architect, beginning in 1476, in commissions that culminated with rebuilding the choir of the church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro (1482-1486). Space was limited, and Bramante made a theatrical apse in bas-relief, combining the painterly the arts of perspective with Roman details. There is an octagonal sacristy, surmounted by a dome. As at Brunelleschi's Pazzi Chapel Renaissance architecture was born at Florence, so at Bramante's Santa Maria presso San Satiro the Renaissance arrived in Lombardy. In Milan Bramante also built Santa Maria delle Grazie (1492-99); other early works include the cloisters of Sant'Ambrogio, Milan (1497-1498), and the Palazzo Caprini (1501-1502) and some other smaller constructions in Pavia and Legnano, but in 1499, with his Sforza patron driven from Milan by an invading army of the French, Bramante made his way to Rome, where he was already known to the powerful Cardinal Riario.

LeBlanc, Head, Field Projects Moscow, June 24-26, 2007 Moaxoq Red Square – Left: the Kremlin; center: Gum department store; right: St-Basil Cathedral Beverly Weisblatt and I stopped in Moscow on our way back from Kazan where the GCI was responsible for the organization and delivery of the scientific symposium and the pre-congress course of the Organization of World Heritage Cities world con- gress. Beverly speaks fluent Russian and this was a blessing for getting around Mos- cow, especially for using the Metro that is a bit complicated to figure out if you don’t understand the language. Day 1, Sunday June 24 The flight from Kazan to Moscow only lasts approximately an hour and a half. Both Beverly and I were laden with heavy suitcases as we were bringing back office mate- rial used during the OWHC congress. We stayed at the Marco Polo hotel in Moscow, close to downtown, a quite comfortable place. 1 Gorky’s House Museum Location: Ulitsa Malaya Nikitskaya, 6/2 Metro: Arbatskaya Once we got rid of the suitcases, our first visit was to Gorky’s House Museum that is located in walking distance from the hotel. The house is a masterpiece of the art- nouveau style of architecture. It was built for the merchant Riabushinski at the begin- ning of the 20th century. Later Stalin had it renovated and gave it to Maxim Gorky, his favorite "proletarian" writer. Here Gorky spent his last years (1931-1936). The museum is interesting both as a Gorky museum and as an architectural monument.

David , by Michelangelo (Accademia di Belle Arti , Florence , Italy ) is a masterpiece of Renaissance and world art. The Renaissance (UK : /r ɪˈneɪsəns/ , US : /rɛnəˈsɑːns/ )[1] is a period in European history , covering the span between the 14th and 17th centuries. It is an extension of the Middle Ages ,[2] and is bridged by the Age of Enlightenment to modern history . It grew in fragments, with the very first traces found seemingly in Italy , coming to cover much of Europe, for some schola rs marking the beginning of the modern age . The intellectual basis of the Renaissance was its own invented version of humanism , derived from the concept of Roman Humanitas and the rediscovery of classical Greek philosophy, such as that of Protagoras , who said that "Man is the measure of all things." This new thinking became manifest in art, architecture, politics, science and literature. Early examples were the development of perspective in oil painting and the recycled knowledge of how to make concrete . Although the invention of metal movable type sped the dissemination of ideas from the later 15th century, the changes of the Renaissance were not uniformly experienced across Europe: the very first traces appear in Italy as early as the late 13th century, in particular with the writings of Dante and the paintings of Giotto . As a cultural movement, the Renaissance encompassed innovative flowering of Latin and vernacular literatures, beginning with the 14th -century resurg ence of learning based on classical sources, which contemporaries credited to Petrarch ; the development of linear perspective and other techniques of rendering a more natural reality in painting ; and gradual but widespread educational reform .

Thank God, that time has finally come. In the next seven chapters well take an unforgettable tour of this remarkable land. Would you stand with me on Red Square in the heart of Moscow. Behind us is St. Basil’s Cathedral, one of the many churches within the Kremlin complex. There are fourteen of them - fourteen churches right at the headquarters of the Soviet Union. Of course, all of them became museums under Communist rule. Yet despite the prevailing atheism of the last seventy years, these magnificent cathedrals have borne a testimony - a silent, yet powerful testimony to the religious heritage of the Russian people. Now there is a new yearning for the ancient faith. And surprisingly, religion is respectable again - thanks to the policies of perestroika (the restructuring of society under President Mikhail Gorbachev). Across the Soviet Union, there is a tremendous revival of spirituality among Christians, Muslims, and Jewish people. In these pages, as we get to know our Soviet brothers and sisters, I’m sure well find much inspiration for our own faith. You understand that I’m a United States citizen, and I praise God for my land of freedom - but I’ve noticed that Soviet Christians are equally patriotic for their own homeland. Shall we then set aside political differences and cherish what we have in common? Let’s focus on the faith in God that binds our hearts together.
