The great churches of Kievan Rus', built after the adoption of christianity in 988, were the first examples of monumental architecture in the East Slavic region. The architectural style of the Kievan state, which quickly established itself, was strongly influenced by Byzantine architecture. Early Eastern Orthodox churches were mainly built from wood, with their simplest form known as a cell church. Major cathedrals often featured many small domes, which has led some art historians to infer how the pagan Slavic temples may have appeared. -

Advances in Social Science, Education and Humanities Research, volume 469 Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Art Studies: Science, Experience, Education (ICASSEE 2020) The Play of Daniel in the National Musical Culture Oksana Evgenevna Sheludyakova1,* 1Music Theory at the Urals Mussorgsky State Conservatoire, Ekaterinburg, Russian Federation *Corresponding author. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The article is devoted to the consideration of the processes of biblical story implementation ("Play of Daniel") in the Old Russian culture and domestic works of the new time. The process of secularization was analyzed: from the church ceremony the Play moved first to the theater stage, and then to the fairgrounds, and in the early twentieth century was resumed in the concert hall. His liturgical side disappeared - prayers, liturgical hymns, the accent shifts to a dramatic and then comic performance, already in the play by Polotsky P. Only in the composition of the Kastalsky he once again took part in the performance as a church reader. The conclusion was made about a sharp reduction in its musical component - from "dewy poems" of considerable length, to brief "games" in the play by Simeon Polotsky and in skomorokh fun. Only at the beginning of the twentieth century, thanks to the "historical restoration" of Kastalsky A.D. a new, mostly musical version of the Play appeared. Keywords: "Play of Daniel", Old Russian rite, Old Russian singing tradition, musical restoration of Kastalsky. A one version, this amazing Play appeared in church life I. INTRODUCTION thanks to an outstanding bishop - St. Macarius, In the liturgical tradition of Ancient Russia there Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia (1482-1563). -
A Note from the Associate Pastor PASTOR’S REFLECTIONS on the “GREAT THREE DAYS”
A Note from the Associate Pastor PASTOR’S REFLECTIONS ON THE “GREAT THREE DAYS” As I write this letter, it is two days before Ash Wednesday. But I would like you to spend a couple of minutes with me thinking about the end of our preparation for the celebration of Easter. The Great Three Days stretch from Maundy Thursday through Easter Day. On these days, the church participates in the drama that unfolds before our eyes as Jesus eats a meal with friends, prays that another way might yet be found to accomplish the Father's will, submits to arrest by state officials, offers no defense to charges brought by false witnesses, and finally is nailed to a cross, where the Holy One of God offers up his spirit into the hands of the Father who sent him. We all know how the story ends. The story does not change from year to year. For at the end of the Great Three Days, Jesus breaks the bonds of death, crosses over from death to life, grabs hold of all who are united to him by baptism and drags them out of the fierce clutches of the great enemy Death into the shining bright light of new life. But because we all need to be reminded of the story, we turn to the pages of scripture on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday to listen to the heart of the story of salvation. The Gospel of John tells of Jesus' new commandment to love one another on Maundy Thursday. Isaiah's powerful image of the Suffering Serv- ant and the telling of the passion on Good Friday speak of suffering and death as part of God's plan of salva- tion. -

ISSN: 2473-7275 ©JOURNAL OF ICON STUDIES 1 Kathleen Scollins A Haymarket Khozhdenie na osliati: Raskolnikov’s Donkey Walk and the Failures of Iconic Performativity Abstract In sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Moscow, Orthodox priests and celebrants reenacted Christ’s entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday in a ritual known as the Donkey Walk (Khozhde- nie na osliati). Art historian Alexei Lidov has interpreted this reenactment as a “spatial icon,” in which city and inhabitants co-create a dynamic, living “Entry into Jerusalem” icon. This paper reexamines the final chapters of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment within the context of this ritual, arguing that Raskolnikov’s attempted act of penitence at the Haymarket represents a failed Donkey Walk, in which the city and its inhabitants resist the anticipated transformation, suggest- ing the impossibility of iconic performativity in Peter’s profane city. Keywords: Donkey Walk, Alexei Lidov, spatial icon, performative, Crime and Punishment Introduction: The Performing Icon, Past and Present The question of an icon’s performativity—its ability to effect change or transformation within a reverent beholder or community—has remained a topic of theological and theoretical debate for over one and a half millennia, from antiquity through the Iconoclastic crisis and beyond, into the postmodern age. -
