The Gattilusj of Lesbos (1355—1462). «Me Clara Caesar Donat Leebo Ac Mytilene, Caesar, Qui Graio Praesidet Iraperio'
The Gattilusj of Lesbos (1355—1462). «Me clara Caesar donat Leebo ac Mytilene, Caesar, qui Graio praesidet iraperio'. Corsi apud Folieta The Genoese occupation of Chios, Lesbos, and Phokaia by the families of Zaccaria and Cattaneo was not forgotten in the counting- houses of the Ligurian Republic. In 1346, two years after the capture of Smyrna, Chios once more passed under Genoese control, the two Foglie followed suite, and in 1355 the strife between John Cantacuzene and John V Palaiologos for the throne of Byzantium enabled a daring Genoese, Francesco Gattilusio, to found a dynasty in Lesbos, which gradually extended its branches to the islands of the Thracian sea and to the city of Ainos on the opposite mainland, and which lasted in the original seat for more than a Century. Disappointed in a previous attempt to recover his rights, the young Emperor John V was at this time living in retirement on the island of Tenedos, then a portion of the Greek Empire and from its position at the mouth of the Dardanelles both an excellent post of obserration and a good base for a descent upon Constantinople. During his so- journ there, a couple of Genoese galleys arrived, commanded by Fran- cesco Gattilusio, a wealthy freebooter, who had sailed from his native oity to onrvp rmt for himself, annidst the confusion of the Orient, a petty principality in the Thracian Chersonese, äs others of his compa- triots had twice done in Chios, äs the Venetian nobles had done in the Archipelago 150 years earlier. The Emperor found in this chance visi- tor an Instrument to effect his own restoration; the two men came to terms, and John V promised, that if Gattilusio would help him to recover his throne, he would bestow upon him the hand of his sister Maria — an honour similar to that conferred by Michael VIII upon Benedetto Zaccaria. -
103 Considerations on the Appearance And
CONSIDERATIONS ON THE APPEARANCE AND DEVELOPMENT OF HUMANITARIAN LEGISLATIVE NORMS IN THE FRAMEWORK OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS DURING THE MIDDLE AGES Vitalie RUSU* Abstract During the Middle Ages, war did not aim at glory, but interests, and the peace state was not considered honourable, but humiliating, as initially, the causes of a war could be: the obligation to avenge an offence or a crime, the conflicts between suzerains and vassals, the campaigns against some cities or ending rebellions. Most of the time, for kings, land owners and knights, war was the best choice to prove their power and to increase their wealth. The reason was the spoils of war. However, in all those conflicts, human people were affected, thus generating the need to develop some specific norms in order to protect them. Keywords: Humanitarian Law, war, conflict evolution, early international relations 1. Introductory Remarks At the beginning of feudalism, conquest wars and wars carried out for obtaining supremacy on vast areas were very frequent, and the ways and methods used in fights were very cruel. Later on, the problem of arguing a ―rightful‖ war became a problem. In this respect, regardless of the country, we shall not overlook the following moments: - after the period of feudal conflicts (11th - 12th centuries) an active struggle for limiting and forbidding armed conflicts began. During the same period, the rule according to which war can only be declared by the king was established; - gradually, the so called legal grounds for a ―rightful‖ war appear, among them the returning of stolen property and the country‘s defence. -

Teaching Slavic History in Romania in 2017
Studia Slavica et Balcanica Petropolitana ББК 63.3(0)5; УДК 94(498); DOI 10.21638/11701/spbu19.2017.211 R. Mârza TEACHING SLAVIC HISTORY IN ROMANIA IN 2017 My contribution relies on my experience of more than ten years in teaching a university course of Slavic history in Romania. The course and seminar are entitled «The Slavs and Slavonism in the Medieval and Early Modern History of the Romanians» [«Slavii şi slavonismul în istoria medievală şi premodernă a românilor»]. It is a special course taught to third year students, BA level, at the History of Philosophy Faculty of the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj. For several years now, this teaching experience has led me to several questions regarding the opportunity of offering such a course from a didactic perspective, how it connects to the times we live in, the manner in which such a course should be prepared according to the education, expectations, and needs of our students. I continue to find answers to these questions throughout the years and on this occasion I shall attempt to formulate them. I will begin by presenting briefly the history of Slavic Studies in Romania, as an academic discipline. In Romania, scientific interest into Slavic Studies (Slavistics) dates back to the second half of the 19th century. Such interests appeared as a result of Romanian historiography, culture, and society becoming modern and mature. For almost a century (from the end of the 18th century until the mid-19th century), the historiography of the Enlightenment and of Romanticism have revealed the Latin historical and linguistic factors as fundamental, even exclusive ones in the formation of the Romanian people and language. -

Marriage, Inheritance, and Family Discord: French Elite and the Transformation of the Polish Szlachta
Blackburn: Marriage, Inheritance, and Family Discord 2 WORLD HISTORY REVIEW / Summer 2004 MARRIAGE, INHERITANCE, AND FAmily DISCORD: FRENCH ELITE AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE POLISH SZLACHTA by Christopher Blackburn [M. Damon to M. Wisdom] As to philosophy, you should know that our present age is one of enlightenment. Along with English frock coats, philosophy has come into vogue. In the boudoirs of the most fashionable ladies, right next to embroidery hoops and face powder you will find volumes of M. Rousseau, the philosophical works of Voltaire, and other writings of that sort. —Ignacy Krasicki (1776) Several important themes permeate Monsieur Damon’s instruc- tions to his aristocratic pupil. Most significant is not that Poland was a part of the general European Enlightenment, but that Polish enlight- ened thought resided primarily within “fashionable” elite circles and was ultimately based on the writings of the French philosophes. The wholesale acceptance of French culture brought a clear and conscious change to the szlachta’s traditionally Sarmatian character, while at the same time the szlachta family was unconsciously transformed by the more subtle Western notions of kinship and affective individual- ism, a process that culminated with the reign of the last enlightened despot—Napoleon Bonaparte.2 The mentalité of the Polish nobility was recast in the eighteenth century as its membership embraced selectively certain aspects of both the Enlightenment and ancien régime France. The piecemeal acceptance of these ideas by the traditionally Sarmatian nobility led to the evolution of an ideology resembling Enlightened Sarmatianism—one that embraced formal education, individualism, and Western appearance, which coexisted with agrarianism, anti-urbanism, and devotion to the Church.3 Once again the szlachta displayed its paradoxical nature by Produced by The Berkeley Electronic Press, 2003 1 World History Review, Vol. -

Dimitrie Cantemir Cu Privire La Paternitatea Și Valoarea Informativă a „Hronicului Lui Ureche Vornicul”
DIMITRIE CANTEMIR CU PRIVIRE LA PATERNITATEA ȘI VALOAREA INFORMATIVĂ A „HRONICULUI LUI URECHE VORNICUL” Dr. Valentina EȘANU, Institutul de Istorie, Chișinău, Republica Moldova Abstract: In the study Dimitrie Cantemir on the paternity and informative value of «The Chronicle of Ureche Vornicul», the writings of scholar prince devoted to the history of Romanians uses many European sources, from the ancient to European renaissance authors. In addition, the monarch also uses various chronicles of his homeland, and often referred to the «Chronicle of Ureche Vornicul”, which he considered to be an important historian, while his writing extremely valuable. Throughout the centuries this chronicle was attributed to various authors, including Grigore Ureche (1590–1647), while Dimitrie Cantemir assigned it to his father Nestor Ureche (1550–1618). The chronicle was not preserved in original, but survived due to copies made by various scribes, who, occasionally were making additions to the original, addings which were criticized and considered defamatory by Cantemir in relation to the origin of the Romanians topic. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT The subject of this thesis is the development of a literary culture among the Romanians in the period 1829-1890; the effect of this development on the Romanians’ drive towards social modernization and political independence; and the way in which the idea of literature (as both concept and concrete manifestation) and the idea of the Romanian nation shaped each other. I concentrate on developments in the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia (which united in 1859, later to form the old Kingdom of Romania). I begin with an outline of general social and political change in the Principalities in the period to 1829, followed by an analysis of the image of the Romanians in European public opinion, with particular reference to the state of cultural institutions (literacy, literary activity, education, publishing, individual groups) and their evaluation for political purposes.
