Often overshadowed by Taj Mahal’s popularity, many are unaware of Agra ’s other hidden wonders. The city’s surviving art, cultures, architecture and royal cuisine from that era are exceptional. Skilled local craftsmanship is almost genetic here; with artisans designing vases and trays with Pietra dura technique (using cut and fitted, highly-polished coloured stones to create images) and weaving embellished garments. You’ll find most of these items in the city’s bazaars. Although now a bustling industrial city, the beauty and elegance of its monuments and heritage shine on. Contemporary Agra can only be described as an intense yet grand experience.
Afternoon take a privately guided tour of Agra city: Visit the impressive Red Fort , built by Emperor Akbar in between 1567 and 1573. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it encompasses an enormous complex of courtly buildings. Also, visit small but elegant Itimad- ud-Daulah’s Tomb (1622) lyrically described as a “jewel box in marble”. The tomb is a combination of white marble, coloured mosaic, stone inlay and lattice work. Stylistically, it is the most innovative 17th century Mughal building.
