Firstly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor, Dr. Talbot for the continuous support of my thesis-related research, for her patience, motivation, and guidance. I am forever grateful to her for my first exposure to the Mughal Empire in a class that changed the way I thought about history and put me on the trajectory to writing my thesis. I could not have imagined having a better supervisor and mentor for my research. I also want to thank my second reader — Dr. Janice Leoshko for encouraging me to take a more creative and poetic approach which pulls away from the more comfortable use of a single lens. Her advice was critical in the formation of my thesis argument.
I would also like to thank Dr. Akbar Hyder for first introducing me to the concept of a paradise garden in the Fall of 2017. His tour of Delhi contributed to the conception of my research questions. In addition to planting the seed for this thesis, Dr. Hyder has been a great mentor throughout my undergraduate career. I am grateful for the guidance of all my language instructors and professors at the University of Texas and the American Institute of Indian Studies in Jaipur and Lucknow. I would also like to thank the UT South Asia Institute for their continued support and for hosting stimulating lecture series.
This research would not have been possible without the researchers who came before me. When first approaching the concept of the Mughal garden, I was unsure how much research already existed. To my surprise, I discovered a bounty of Mughal garden scholars, many of whom have dedicated large parts of their career to researching and writing about this magnificent tradition. Amongst all others referenced in this thesis, I am particularly grateful to Dr. Wayne Begley for his work on the Taj, Dr. Eugenia Herbert for her book Flora’s Empire: British Gardens in India, and Elizabeth Moynihan for her fervor in the field and her books Paradise as a Garden in Persia and Mughal India and The Moonlight Garden: New Discoveries at the Taj Mahal. I am also grateful to James Wescoat, and Joachim Wolschke-Bulmahn and all other contributors to the 1996 Dumbarton Oaks Mughal Gardens Sources Places Representations and Prospects, which provided great inspiration and context for my thesis.
Lastly, I am grateful to have had Dr. Lai as a mentor through my freshman year and the duration of my thesis project. Under her guidance, I have come to better understand the process of writing and how to identify my reoccurring weaknesses as a writer. Both of these skills, I will carry with me and continue to improve for years. With the seeds of awareness she planted, I have been able to overcome the fear of writing.
