Nuevomexicano/a student identity was shaped through a process of accommodating to and resisting institutional powers. Since 1898, Nuevomexicano/a students have been active members of the university community, despite periods when they constituted a small portion of the student body and the institution’s frequent disregard for Nuevomexicano/a culture and language. As they participated in campus activities, Nuevomexicano/as reconstructed their individual and collective identities, appropriating terms such as Spanish or Chicano/a, as a rhetorical strategy to revise their relationships with the university. Extralocal institutions, including government institutions, national protest movements, and international organizations shaped public conversations about cultural identity. During the first two periods, students employed subtle strategies of resistance that included presenting speeches and reorganizing student government. Often labeled as accommodationist, these strategies represent viable rhetorical strategies that provided students access to dominant literacies, which were used to promote social change. In the 1970s, Chicano/a students utilized more aggressive practices, such as a weeklong sit-in, to radically alter the institutional culture at NMHU. In the forty years since the sit-in, NMHU has developed into a university that supports its Nuevomexicano/a students and incorporates elements of their culture into the university’s social fabric. 9 CHAPTER 1: PRACTICES OF RESISTANCE, PRACTICES OF ACCOMMODATION: COMPLICATING LATINO/A IDENTITY This dissertation revises conceptualizations of accommodation and resistance by tracing the changing identities of Nuevomexicano/a 1 students at New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) from 1910 to 1973. Located in Las Vegas, NM, and designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) by the federal government, NMHU has historically offered Nuevomexicano/as access to postsecondary institutions and professional positions, and although they were underrepresented at the university through most of its history, Nuevomexicano/a students operated through authorized institutional organizations, such as the student government, fraternities, and the student press, to promote institutional change at NMHU, resisting restrictive, insensitive, or racist practices, while rarely publicly framing these activities as resistance.     De la “no intervención” a la institucionalización: la evolución de las relaciones Estado-diáspora en el caso mexicano* Alexandra Délano HASTA FINALES de los años ochenta, en términos generales, la posición del gobierno mexicano sobre la administración de los flujos migratorios consistía en garantizar la protección de los derechos de la población mexicana en Estados Unidos y asegurar que se mantuviera la “válvula de escape” a las presiones económicas y políticas del país. Parte de las con- diciones necesarias para lograr estos objetivos dependían de la estabilidad de la relación con Estados Unidos y de las percepciones del tema migra- torio como un problema en la agenda bilateral. Con el fin de mantener el statu quo “desventajoso pero familiar” (Ronfeldt y Sereseres, 1983: 89) y evitar tensiones en la relación bilateral, el gobierno mexicano desarrolló sus acciones de protección consular y sus relaciones con la comunidad mexicana en el exterior bajo los límites de la “no intervención” –lo cual se interpretaba como ejercer la responsabilidad de protección consular sin cuestionar los procesos legales estadounidenses ni fomentar la movi- lización política de la comunidad migrante, no organizar actividades de cabildeo y no participar en discusiones sobre las leyes migratorias de Estados Unidos (Cardoso, 1979; Zazueta, 1983; Rico, 1999). A su vez, evitó vincular la migración a otros temas para no “contaminar” la agenda bilateral. En el ámbito nacional, la discusión pública sobre estos temas era limitada y el gobierno respondía a las críticas de grupos nacio- nalistas y de oposición con una retórica basada en la idea de disuadir la emigración, promover el retorno de los migrantes y mantener sus lazos con la “patria perdida”.

    10 Deadliest World Events In Human History by Simon Rickards, January 3, 2013 • • • Throughout human history, there have been many world events that have seen a multitude of deaths and widespread destruction. The ten entries on this list are ranked according to the number of deaths. While some of the events spanned just a few years, others occurred over centuries. Since these death toll estimates are always highly disputed, I have made it a rule to use the highest respectable estimate in every case. I have also chosen to focus this list on ‘man-made’ events – natural disasters have not been included. 10 Atlantic Slave Trade DeathD Toll Estimate: 15 Million The Atlantic (or Trans-Atlantic) slave trade began roughly in the 16th century, reaching its peak in the 17th century until finally being all but abolished in the 19th Century. The main driving force behind this trade was the need for European empires to establish themselves in the New World. European and American settlers therefore began to use mainly West African slaves to fill the vast labor needs on plantations. Estimates vary on the amount of slaves who died, but it is said that for every ten slaves taken on a ship, fourf would perish from causes related to mistreatment. 9 Late Yuan Warfare & Transition to Ming Dynasty DeathD Toll Estimate: 30 Million The Yuan dynasty was founded by Kublai Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan, around 1260. Yuan literally translates as ‘Great is the Heavenly and Primal’, though there proved to be nothing either great or heavenly about it.

In this regard, horse is noble and descent and owl is symbol of destruction .Indeed, these literary men have two goals, they wanted to transfer humanly exalted thoughts in the form of story in addition to entertaining the readers. Cat symbolizes greed, playfulness, arrogance, hostility, imprudence, cruelty, ostentation and cunning in Persian literature .Cat has heterogeneous status between propitious and malevolent in myths. But all indecent traits of cat symbolize human carnal soul that it sometimes becomes evil and sometimes achieves divine and humanly status. This article investigates the mythology and legends of cat and its attendance in Persian literature tales and verse. Key words: cat, Persian literature, nations’ mythology, Persian tales, Islamic traditions, folk beliefs. Introduction There are different viewpoints about cat in Persian literature and west and east mythology, so that its status fluctuates between sanctity and malevolence indicating fluctuation of human soul in descending to carnality and lust and ascending to divinity and perfection.
