Date to go here F ROM T HE CEO

September has always been a busy basketball month and this year is no exception. In This issue Congratulations to all the teams that made the SBL finals and in particular to the grand NITP Program 2 finalists and eventual winners. To see different teams in the grand final is certainly a positive sign for the health of the SBL competition. West Coast Waves 3 At the junior level, WABL finals are underway with the grand finals scheduled for Sunday update 23rd of September at the WA Basketball Centre. Best wishes to all the teams remaining in the race to be crowned 2012 champions. Advanced Coach 4 Program The BWA Annual Awards Dinner is being held this weekend with approximately 200 attending where significant achievements and contributions from participants and volunteers will be acknowledged and Member Update - 6 rewarded.

Court Hire Cost The majority of the West Coast Waves squad have now arrived in and we are looking forward to seeing the new look team under coach Kennedy Kereama play some great basketball during the season. SBL Kicks101 Grand 7 Final It would be remiss of me not to mention the current issue with proposed court hire increases at the WA Basketball Centre. From 1 July this year, the cost of court hire has increased by over $100,000. A similar Brett’s Blurb 10 increase is proposed from 1 July 2013. The sport cannot afford this. We have asked the minister Terry Waldron to index the current rate to CPI. We have yet to receive a response. Thank you to all those people who have provided support and encouragement for Basketball WA’s position in this matter. United Community Take West Coast Waves Players To Court

The West Coast Waves major sponsors have thrown off their business jackets and dusted off their sneakers for a head to head battle with the Waves 2012/13 squad.

United Community Credit Union staff gathered from all over Perth to face up to their favourite basketball team in a scratch match on Monday night to experience firsthand what the Waves will bring to the WNBL this season.

United Community’s team suffered a major blow just before tipoff with their captain, Ivan, going down with a calf injury dur- ing warm up. Waves stars Melissa Marsh and Shani Amos tried to dance around their sponsors on the court, while Waves 6’5 newcomer Natalie Burton easily reached over her opposition to get her team their points.

The United Team came with the support of their large and loud cheer squad while their team pushed the Waves to their limits with 20-point baskets, the Waves coaching staff playing on their behalf and then finished with a team of ten up against the Waves five.

West Coast Waves head coach, Kennedy Kereama, said it was good for the players to mingle with United Community staff and have some fun before the squad get into serious on court training ahead of the season in October. “It was a very fun night for both United Community and the West Coast Waves squad. It gave the new players a chance to see the support they have from their sponsors and United Community had the opportunity to meet the team and experience what it’s like on court,” Kereama said.

“This is the second season United Community have been a part of the Waves and we are thankful we have sponsors who want to get involved with the team and are passionate about supporting the Waves throughout the 2012/13 season.”

SBL Kickz101 Perth Grand Finals The Kickz101 Perth Grand Finals were held on Friday 31 August (women) and Saturday 1 September (men) at the WA Basketball Centre.

In the 24th grand finals we welcomed new partner Kickz101 Perth on board as the SBL Grand Final Naming Rights Partner. We would like to thank them for their support in delivering the event and make sure you head to the Piccadilly Arcade and check them out for all of your basketball needs!

Three out of the four teams were in their first ever grand final which highlights the competitiveness of the league in 2011. The women’s game was played between the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers and the Rockingham Flames. The Slammers came out victorious 85-48 in front of a record crowd of 956 to claim their first ever championship in their first ever finals appearance.

In the men’s competition the Cockburn Cougars came out victorious 105-72 over the People’s Choice East Perth Eagles in front of another sold out crowd of 2,000 people.

Play by the rules

As the finals approach, I thought I would include a picture of a sign that I came across many years ago when touring Indiana in the USA with a junior basketball team.

Sometimes we tend to forget the real reasons that our children (and us adults) play this great game of basketball. The enjoyment that playing a game with our mates often overshadows whether we win or lose.

However when events such as finals occur, the emphasis suddenly changes to that of winning. Pressure is placed on the players to win; the coaches to coach better than they ever have before; for officials to not make one mistake when refereeing the game; and for the spectators (often parents) to show good sportsmanship towards both teams.

I encourage everyone to “play by the rules” at the “business end of the season.” “Sportsmanship is an expectation” that everyone follow.

11. Drill of the month

R IP AND D RIBBLE S HOOTING DRILL

Coach holds the ball tightly. The aim of this drill is for each player to "rip" the ball out of the coach’s hands and then make a 1 dribble jump-shot. Only two steps should be made (as opposed to a step, 1-2 move).

The objective of this drill is for the offensive players to make a very quick dribble move and get a shot up as quick as possible (hence the two steps).

Variation: rip and dribble in various directions as diagrammed (to the left and to the right If you have no coach, players should place the ball on a chair and pick up.
