Super Clinic

The inaugural Saturday Coaches Super Clinic was a fantastic success with over 70 metropolitan and country coaches taking part in the whole day extravaganza of coach education. Hearing from presenters such as CJ Jackson, Shawn Dennis, Kennedy Kereama and Alan Black, eager coaches of all levels were treated to expertise and some light hearted comedic relief along the way as well.

The four coaches covered a broad array of topics from individual and team offen- sive/ defensive development through to conditioning of international athletes.

Basketball WA Education and Training Officer Vlad Alava said the event was something that he was looking at running on a yearly basis.

“To have the quality of presenters that we had come out and share their knowledge with the coaches in attendance was fantastic. We had coaches from domestic competition through to SBL and you would have been hard-pressed not to come away with some new piece of knowledge or another way of doing things. I will certainly be looking at making the Super Clinic an annual event especially with the support and how well it was received.”

Advanced Coach Program

Basketball WA is excited to announce in the coming weeks the launch of the Advanced Coach Program (ACP) in what is seen to be a landmark event for coach education in WA.

The ACP will be led by Head Coach Rob Beveridge in its inaugural year and will see participants undertake elite coach educa- tion and training through completing a number of accreditations across a twelve month period.

Coaches undertaking the program will complete a National Level 2 Basketball Accreditation or equivalent, Sports trainer, First Aid and nutri- tion courses.

The aim of the ACP is to educate and produce high-calibre accredited coaches who are aligned with the State High Performance Programs. These coaches are envisaged to also be active coaches in the WABL/SBL competition with a willingness to contribute towards the BWA High Performance Development programs.

More details will be avaliable in the coming weeks.

WA U16 Boys Support Their Own

Often Basketball is measured by results, but sometimes life is bigger than points on a scoreboard.

Recently the WA Metro U16 Boys finished 6th at the Australian Junior Championships which is a great result for the team.

However the team's thoughts were always on another team member back in Perth. Jalen Smith son of former Rockingham Mens Head Coach and State U16 Coach Jason Smith is being treated for Leukemia at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Jalen was the biggest supporter of the team away sending messages of support to the boys and following all games on line. His inspiration was a big part of the teams motivation to do well.

Upon return the team visited Jalen at PMH to present to him his own signed number 7 jersey and thank him for his support.

Well done to Coach Alan Black and the team on preparing a strong group of young men on and off the court.

BWA wishes Jalen all the best in his recovery.

Results for U16 teams

Congratulations to our WA Under 16 teams who competed in Tamworth, NSW in July. We are hearing great feedback on an enjoyable and successful tournament. Results as follows:  U16 Country Men: 13th  U16 Metro Men: 6th  U16 Country Women: 13th  U16 Metro Women: 11th

U18 3x3

Corry Wellsteed recently coached WA ladies to a 6th place finish in the inaugural U18 3x3 Championships held in Sydney Olympic Park in July. The team consisted of 4 players: Parris Laurie, Samantha Roscoe, Hannah Throns, and Emma Gandini. On the back of the teams success Corry has been selected as the Australian Women’s Head Coach for the U18 3x3 World Championships to be held in Seville, Spain in September. WA’s Samantha Roscoe (Stirling) has also been selected as a reserve for this team. Congratulations to all involved and we wish Corry all the best for Spain

Alcohol.Think Again West Coast Waves Update

The Alcohol.Think Again West Coast Waves tip off their 2012/13 WNBL season at home on Saturday October 6 against the Bendigo Spirit at the WA Basketball Centre. The team has an eventful season ahead of them including hosting four-time Olympian, Lauren Jackson, and her team the Canberra Capitals at “The Sandpit” twice during the 2012/13 fixtures. Alcohol.Think Again West Coast Waves head coach, Kennedy Kereama, said it is great to have one of the sports best players come to Perth in Round 11 and 14. “It’s going to be great; I think that’s going to give any young aspiring female basketball players an opportunity to come and see arguably the best female basketball player in the world and I think Australians can be extremely proud of having such a great female role model and some- one they can model their game on,” Kereama said about Jackson. The coach is also excited about starting the WNBL season with two home games and securing a long home stretch around the break in De- cember and January. “We’ve secured a very favourable draw for the 2012/13 season which is really exciting,” Kereama said. “Our first game is against Bendigo and last season we were good enough to beat them, which is great. Then Sydney at home as well; two very tough teams that have been playoff contenders for the last few years in the WNBL so it’s great to have them at home.” “I think that obviously we need to try to take advantage of as many home games as we possibly can this year and utilise the time differences and all the physiological advantages we’re going to have over teams when we play at home,” the coach said. The Alcohol.Think Again West Coast Waves are also looking forward to getting out and about this season and will be taking three home games to the regions. The Waves are travelling to the South West in Round 5 against Bulleen, heading to Basketball WA Association club, Lakeside, in Round 7 and continue their successful Northern Territory partnership with the Round 18 game to be played in Alice Springs. Basketball WA chief operations officer, Craig Reynolds, said it’s great to have the opportunity to take their show on the road and to have the support of the communities. “This year the Waves are taking the game to the community with matches being held at Lakeside, Bunbury and the Northern Territory. This could not of happened without the support of the Department of Sport and Recreation and the NT government,” Mr Reynolds said.

Brett’s Blurb What makes a good coach?

I often get asked what makes a good coach. Below are some of the characteristics that I look for in coaches:

INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERISTICS - Appropriate explanation/requirement context of drill - Coaching in detail - Reinforcing detail - Coaching “on the run” technique - Use of “active” and specific coaching terms - Use of succinct coaching points - Displays enthusiasm and interest verbally and non-verbally - Communicates at a level understandable by players - Provides accurate and timely feedback/evaluation to players

ORGANISATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS - Has a written practice plan - Practice plan has an appropriate organisation and structure - Creates “game like” repetitions in drills - Creates intensity/competition in drills - Provides adequate repetitions in drills - Keeps to time - Ratio of explanation to activity in drills (no excess) - Understanding of session requirements ie teaching or performance /outcome or combination - Understanding roles of Head Coach and Assistant Coach - Covers the court adequately during practice sessions (“coralling players”)

Drill of the month Chaser drill

This drill incorporates several skills (dribbling, layups, defence). It also is a great drill to encourage competition. The drill is as follows:

- Offensive players start on the sideline with a ball. Defensive players start at the bottom of the key - Both players need to start low and stay low - Coach calls “go” to start the drill - Offense looks to push the ball out in front when dribbling while the defence needs to sprint without the ball - The offense’s goal is to make a layup. If the defender is in front, the offense should pull up on the block for a short jump shot (read the defence and make a good decision) - Coaches can create advantages/disadvantages by moving the posi- tion of the cones - Encourage competition by playing to a score

Website of the month Basketball 4 All

This website has a lot of everything from easy to read and print drills to interesting articles on self-motivation. One of the best parts of the site is the video room with YouTube links to drills such as the UConn Drive and Kick shooting, motivational scenes and attacking the Pick and roll.
