MEDIA RELEASE PERTH LYNX TO ENTER NEXT PHASE OF GROWTH The Perth Wildcats and Basketball WA wish to announce that the two organisations have come to an arrangement to transfer the Licence for the Perth Lynx back to Basketball WA for the 2020/21 season so as to commence the next phase of the redevelopment of the women’s pathway program. Five years ago Jack Bendat took ownership of the Perth Lynx to assist the women’s game to become more professional and sustainable at the national level and build a product and program that can provide for the aspirations of young female basketballers across the state to compete at the national level. Jack’s vision has been achieved as the team has gone from strength to strength playing off in four finals series, including a grand final appearance in its first year. The objective was always to support the women’s program to reach new levels of professionalism and provide a solid base to ensure the long term sustainability for the program. Basketball WA can now take a professional program and entrench it in the community basketball fabric to ensure its long term success. BWA CEO Rob Clement said “Basketball has a lot to thank Jack Bendat for and his investment and leadership in our Perth Lynx program has been exemplary, we now look to embrace our broader basketball community to consolidate the work done by Mr Bendat and the Perth Wildcats team to ensure the teams long term success and viability, we thank Mr Bendat for his leadership and contribution to the sport.” Basketball WA is now looking towards the 2020/21 season and working with a range of stakeholders to discuss the future structure of the program and look forward to making some announcements soon. MEDIA RELEASE JESSIE EDWARDS JOINS WAVE OF RETURNING PLAYERS TO PERTH LYNX The Perth Lynx have bolstered their frontcourt stocks, welcoming home Jessie Edwards for WNBL season 2020/21. After being a standout junior in Western Australia, including being named the West Coast Waves Rookie of the Year in 2013/14, Edwards moved to the University of Minnesota. She led the Gophers in blocks in each of her three seasons and finished her College career ranked sixth all-time at Minnesota in blocks and ninth for offensive rebounds. Lynx Head Coach Ryan Petrik was glad to be able to welcome Edwards back to WA, especially after seeing her perform strongly for the Adelaide Lightning in pre-season games against the Lynx last season. “Jessie was someone we were really keen to get back home after she had an opportunity interstate last season. She’s a very good rebounder and being a bit bigger and more mobile than people expect, she’s someone who will really compliment Garbin and Allen.” Edwards was rapt with the opportunity to return to Perth and looking forward to seizing the opportunity presented by a season without imports. “To earn a roster spot in Perth was always a long-term goal, but now it’s about making sure I seize the opportunity with both hands. I’ve played against a lot of the girls on the roster so it’s exciting to be able to play with them now, especially in front of my family and friends.” Edwards will play for the Kalamunda Eastern Suns in the West Coast Classic, joining a number of players on the Lynx roster who will be competing in the event.

Work is continuing on her $10billion Roy Hill project in Western Australia, although it has been hit by doubts over its short-term viability given falling commodity prices and safety issues. Rinehart is pressing ahead and expects the first shipment late in 2015. Most of her wealth comes from huge royalty cheques from Rio Tinto, which mines vast swaths of tenements pegged by Rinehart’s late father, Lang Hancock, in the 1950s and 1960s. Rinehart's wealth has been subject to a long running family dispute with a court ruling in May that eldest daughter Bianca should become head of the $5b family trust. 2. 2018-19 WNBL Semi-final 1 v FRIDAY 25 JANUARY 6 PM DOORS OPEN 7 PM TIP-OFF AIS ARENA Round 15 Recap The final round of the regular season turned out to be more of a thriller than expected, with three out of the top four teams having to go to overtime. For the UC Capitals, a double overtime put the team’s winning streak at risk as Bendigo Spirit put everything on the line for the final game of WNBL19. But Marianna Tolo (27 points, 10 rebounds) and Kelsey Griffin (24 points, 20 rebounds stepped up to get the UC Capitals over the line. UC Capitals head coach, Paul Goriss, said that the close call was a great way to prepare the team for finals. “We haven’t been that behind in the last ten weeks, so having a game where we had to fight harder than what we’ve been used to was great. Having a double overtime game is something we hadn’t had either, so there were great learning outcomes for us heading into finals,” said Goriss. The match against Bendigo was significant in other ways for UC Capitals star, Kelly Wilson, who received her WNBL life membership. Wilson has made her mark in the 2018/19 WNBL season, climbing up to sixth on the all-time games played list and third for all-time assists. Third and fourth place was also determined after a thrilling match between the Perth Lynx and Adelaide Lightning. As the Lynx fell one point short of a win after going to overtime, they have fallen to fourth on the ladder and will therefore be the UC Capitals’ opponent for the semi-finals.

In This issue Congratulations to all the teams that made the SBL finals and in particular to the grand NITP Program 2 finalists and eventual winners. To see different teams in the grand final is certainly a positive sign for the health of the SBL competition. West Coast Waves 3 At the junior level, WABL finals are underway with the grand finals scheduled for Sunday update 23rd of September at the WA Basketball Centre. Best wishes to all the teams remaining in the race to be crowned 2012 champions. Advanced Coach 4 Program The BWA Annual Awards Dinner is being held this weekend with approximately 200 attending where significant achievements and contributions from participants and volunteers will be acknowledged and Member Update - 6 rewarded. Court Hire Cost The majority of the West Coast Waves squad have now arrived in Perth and we are looking forward to seeing the new look team under coach Kennedy Kereama play some great basketball during the season. SBL Kicks101 Grand 7 Final It would be remiss of me not to mention the current issue with proposed court hire increases at the WA Basketball Centre. From 1 July this year, the cost of court hire has increased by over $100,000. A similar Brett’s Blurb 10 increase is proposed from 1 July 2013. The sport cannot afford this.
