March/April has always been a busy time for Basketball and this year is no exception. It was terrific to see so many of our Country Associations competing in the Country Championships at various levels, culminating in the seniors weekend over the long weekend in March. Congratulations to all those who achieved success and a big thank you to everyone who participated and travelled to to enjoy both the basketball and social aspect of the championships.

The SBL Blitz (pre-season) tournament was also held over the long weekend with clubs afforded the opportunity of getting some match practice prior to the regular season commencing.

The Waves Board have appointed Kennedy Kereama (current Tall Ferns coach) as the new coach for two seasons. Kennedy has met with the Waves Board, Basketball WA staff and Waves players and has already taken steps to implement off season training programs. More information can be found within this issue of the West Coast Bounce.

The BWA AGM will be held on Sunday 22 April 2012, followed by a two day Association Conference on Monday and Tuesday 23 and 24 April. The conference will deal with topics such as Governance, Finances, Volunteers, Committee meetings, Fundraising, Marketing and Event Management to name a few. There will be plenty of practical resources provided including easy to use templates. Attendance is free for our Affiliated Basketball Associations and any of their Basketball clubs. I would strongly encourage all of our Associations and Clubs to attend this terrific opportunity.

Thank you to all of our Country Associations for the effort and hard work put into the 2011/12 season as you no doubt look forward to a well deserved break and best wishes to our Metro Associations and SBL clubs as we move into a big 2012 season.

Cox Cleans Up At Waves Awards Night

Rohanee Cox cleaned up at the West Coast Waves 2011/12 Awards on Sunday night claim- ing the Best Defensive Player and the coveted Most Valuable Player for her outstanding contribution throughout the season. Cox had a fantastic return season in the WNBL averaging over 16 points and eight re- bounds per game to make her the clear winner of the major award on the night. Guard, Shani Amos, won Most Improved Player after she stepped up to the point this sea- son when Waves import, Dymond Simon, injured her knee in the first round, giving Amos the opportunity to show her talent. Rookie of the Year went to fast paced youngster Jacinta Bourne who played seven games in her debut season and wowed the crowds with her run up the court. Waves captain, Melissa Marsh, took away the coach’s award for her continued support to the coaching staff and her teammates. And Waves new comer Nikita Martin won the Com- mitment to Excellence award for her dedication to the game and willingness to improve through individual training, extended training sessions and meetings with the coaching staff. The West Coast Waves 2011/12 Awards Night was enjoyed by the players, volunteers, sup- porters, sponsors and staff at Fire & Ice and the Waves would like to thank all who came and made the night special to support the players and the program.

West Coast Waves Head Coach Announced

On 28 February 2012, the West Coast Waves and Basketball WA announced the appointment of Kennedy Kereama as the new Waves head coach for the next two WNBL seasons.

Kereama is currently the head coach of the New Zealand Women’s Basketball team and is preparing the 16th world ranked Tall Ferns for the Olympic Qualifiers in Turkey in June and will relocate to Perth permanently when he has completed his Tall Ferns commitments later this year.

Basketball WA Chief Executive Officer Rick Smith said Kereama was chosen from a quality field of applicants, but his international experience and proven ability to develop young talent were factors that impressed the selection panel.

“Kennedy is an outstanding acquisition for the Waves program. His coaching experience and ability to identify and develop young talent, provide us with a coach that will take our program to another level,” Smith said.

Kereama will commence his role immediately, reviewing the Waves 2011/12 season, meeting players and recruiting a competitive roster for the 2012/13 WNBL season. He will travel to Perth this coming weekend to view local talent competing in the State Basketball League pre- season blitz and begin preparations for the Waves off season program.

Kereama said he was excited to be coming to Perth to build a program that not only identified and nurtured young local talent, but was com- petitive in the WNBL competition and dedicated to the program.

“We will be building a program based on hard work and accountability.

“I am looking for players with the right work ethic who are prepared to do what it takes through commitment and hard work to build a com- petitive program in the WNBL,” he said.

ASK COACH HERBIE

Question: How do I become an elite player?

Answer: To become an elite player takes hard work and dedication. Often you find players who are naturally gifted who aren’t willing to do the hard yards to become an elite player. I have identified the following areas:

1. You have to have a relentless persistence towards training to be the best you can possibly be and you need to be- come your own best coach. Too many players I see these days rely on their coach to do the work. The one to two hours a coach may train this athlete is not enough. Self-motivation is a huge factor in a player becoming an elite player. Time and time again I work with athletes and ask them to change specific things about technique. The very best players are their own best coach and they are willing to make change and develop their game. Some make changes instantly and work hard others plod along. Those willing to change are the ones who show they have the commitment for success. 2. A willingness to sacrifice and commit to excellence both on and off the court. There is more to the game than hav- ing great skills you must learn the professional side of our sport. To have the correct diet, to learn areas of strength and conditioning, utilisation of injury rehabilitation, recovery and an understanding of the sports sciences is increasingly important. The old saying ‘my body is a temple’ and ‘what goes in and out’ must equate to excel- lence is so important if you wish to reach the peak of your sport. 3. Size is a major factor and if you don’t have size and strength you need to be super-fast and super skilled. These days on the international scene and the extreme level of elite Basketball for a centre you need to be seven foot, power forward 6’9+, Small Forward 6’7+, Off Guard 6’5+ and for a point guard six foot plus in most instances. So in the male game this has increased. For females, centre 6’8, power forward 6’6, small forward 6’3+, off guard 6’0+ and point guard in the women’s game you can still expect a smallish guard. Obviously there are exceptions to the rules, but in general this is the new norm. 4. Train hard every day and leave nothing to chance, out train the person next to you and remember there is some- one in the world dedicating more time and effort to their game than what you are. In Western Australia you can fall into the trap of thinking you are a lot better than the reality. The reality is the bigger picture of players com- peting and training day in and day out to be the best. So when you sit down with your X-Box or PlayStation re- member the thousands of kids who are taking the opportunity to develop their game.

Perfect Preparation for Paralympic Hopefuls

As the London 2012 approach, ‘Be Active’ Perth Wheelcats players Shaun Norris, Adam Deans and Kim Robins are using the 2012 National Wheelchair Basketball League as the perfect preparation to press their claims for a place in the Australian Wheelchair Basketball team.

Shaun tasted success with the Rollers in 2008 bringing home a Gold Medal from Beijing and is confident of Austra- lia’s ability to defend their place as the Number One ranked team in the world.

"I mean its tournament basketball and anything can happen, but you can only control what you do and we will be as prepared as we possibly can by the time that first game tips off" said Shaun Norris.

“The next six months for me are all about preparing my body for London and hopefully win another Championship with the Be Active Perth Wheelcats”

The Be Active Perth Wheelcats have sent a message to the rest of Australia this weekend by taking top spot on the National Wheelchair Basketball League Ladder after beating 2011 Champions the Wollongong Rollerhawks.

Based out of the Herb Graham Recreation Centre, the Wheelcats are the most successful team to ever play in the National Wheelchair Basketball League winning seven championships since 2002. In 2011 the Wollongong Roller- hawks broke the Wheelcats winning streak, beating the Perth team in the final to claim their first national title.

Without the services of Paralympians , , Michael Hartnett and Clare Burzynski in 2012, the odds were stacked against the Wheelcats as Wollongong added three national players to their roster in the off season.

The 14 point win over the Wollongong team, to go along with 24 point win over Sydney and 32 point win over Dandenong is testament to the development work that goes on at Wheelchair Sports WA, headed up by Head Coach Kelvin Browner and Junior Coach Craig Bartlett.

‘The most impressive thing from the weekend’s results was the ability for us to be able to spread the load amongst the entire playing squad’ said coach Browner.

The Be Active Perth Wheelcats open their home account on April 21st. To find out when you can come and see the Be Active Perth Wheelcats in action, check- out www.wheelchairsportswa.org.au.

Perth Redbacks Regional and Indigenous Basketball Program

Members of the Narrogin Basketball Association were recently treated to an appearance from an ex-Wildcats squad member, and one of the State Basketball Leagues brightest young players as a part of the Redbacks regional and Indigenous basketball program. For two straight nights at the John Higgins Centre, players and coaches had the opportunity to spend time with SBL player Jarrad Prior. With a focus on basic skill development and training techniques around 100 of Narrogin’s young stars worked tirelessly at improving their games. Graeme Mason, president of the Narrogin Basketball Association said the presence of the Redbacks Community program was greatly appreciated and a big hit with the locals. And Jarrad Prior, one of the Redbacks Community Development Officers was hard at work between evening sessions as he spent the day between delivering basketball and mentoring sessions to schoolchildren in the town of Corrigin. The focus of these ses- sions was physical participation and healthy lifestyle education. The entire trip was made possible with the incredible support of Healthway and the "Go for 2 & 5" message. Redbacks have been delivering clinics to regional centre for the past four years.
