WAGNER AND THE VOLSUNGS None of Wagner’s works is more closely linked with Old Norse, and more especially Old Icelandic, culture. It would be carrying coals to Newcastle if I tried to go further into the significance of the incom- parable eddic poems. I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. This also bears witness to his search for the meaning and essence of the genuinely mythical, its very foundation. Kistner University of Washington Abstract Organizing Knowledge: Comparative Structures of Intersubjectivity in Nineteenth-Century Historical Dictionaries Kelly Kistner Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Gary G. Hamilton Sociology Between 1838 and 1857 language scholars throughout Europe were inspired to create a new kind of dictionary. Deemed historical dictionaries, their projects took an unprecedented leap in style and scale from earlier forms of lexicography. These lexicographers each sought to compile historical inventories of their national languages and were inspired by the new scientific approach of comparative philology. For them, this science promised a means to illuminate general processes of social change and variation, as well as the linguistic foundations for cultural and national unity. This study examines two such projects: The German Dictionary, Deutsches Worterbuch, of the Grimm Brothers, and what became the Oxford English Dictionary. Both works utilized collaborative models of large-scale, long-term production, yet the content of the dictionaries would differ in remarkable ways. The German dictionary would be characterized by its lack of definitions of meaning, its eclectic treatment of entries, rich analytical prose, and self- referential discourse; whereas the English dictionary would feature succinct, standardized, and impersonal entries. Using primary source materials, this research investigates why the dictionaries came to differ. -

Pendas This dissertation examines the relationship between Black America and East Germany from 1949 to 1989, exploring the ways in which two unlikely partners used international solidarity to achieve goals of domestic importance. Despite the growing number of works addressing the black experience in and with Imperial Germany, Nazi Germany, West Germany, and contemporary Germany, few studies have devoted attention to the black experience in and with East Germany. In this work, the outline of this transatlantic relationship is defined, detailing who was involved in the friendship, why they were involved, and what they hoped to gain from this alliance. -

Germanistisches Seminar Wintersemester 2012/13 Dr. Heiko Ullrich Wilhelm Raabe und der historische Roman Wilhelm Raabe and the Historical Novel Mo, 18:15-19:45 Beginn: 15.10.2012 Raum: PB SR 123 Gegenstand: Wilhelm Raabe (1831-1910) gilt neben Theodor Fontane, Theodor Storm, Gottfried Keller, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer und Adalbert Stifter als einer der bedeutendsten Prosaiker des Poetischen Realismus. Zugleich ist er ein wichtiger Vertreter des im 19. Jahrhundert äußerst populären historischen Romans in der Nachfolge Walter Scotts („Waverley“, 1814) und steht hier in einer Reihe mit James Fenimore Cooper, Wilhelm Hauff, Willibald Alexis, Victor Hugo, Alessandro Manzoni, Leo Tolstoi, Felix Dahn und Henryk Sienkiewicz. Im Zentrum des Lektürekurses sollen drei kurze historische Romane aus dem Spätwerk Wilhelm Raabes stehen, die nach ihrem Schauplatz häufig als „Wesertrias“ bezeichnet werden: „Höxter und Corvey“ (1879), „Das Odfeld“ (1888) und „Hastenbeck“ (1899). Auf eine allgemeine Einführung in die Poetik und Gattungsgeschichte des historischen Romans im 19. Jahrhundert und sein antikes Vorbild (die „Aeneis“ Vergils) sowie in die Biographie und das Werk Wilhelm Raabes soll eine eingehende gemeinsame Lektüre, Textanalyse und Interpretation der drei genannten Erzählungen folgen. Dabei wird immer wieder auf die eingangs vorgestellte Gattungsproblematik eingegangen werden. RESEARCH REPORt 2010—2012 MAX-PLANCK-INSTITUT FÜR WISSENSCHAFTSGESCHICHTE Max Planck Institute for the History of Science Cover: Aurora borealis paintings by William Crowder, National Geographic (1947). The International Geophysical Year (1957–8) transformed research on the aurora, one of nature’s most elusive and intensely beautiful phenomena. Aurorae became the center of interest for the big science of powerful rockets, complex satellites and large group efforts to understand the magnetic and charged particle environment of the earth. The auroral visoplot displayed here provided guidance for recording observations in a standardized form, translating the sublime aesthetics of pictorial depictions of aurorae into the mechanical aesthetics of numbers and symbols. Most of the portait photographs were taken by Skúli Sigurdsson RESEARCH REPORT 2010—2012 MAX-PLANCK-INSTITUT FÜR WISSENSCHAFTSGESCHICHTE Max Planck Institute for the History of Science Introduction The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) is made up of three Departments, each administered by a Director, and several Independent Research Groups, each led for five years by an outstanding junior scholar. Since its foundation in 1994 the MPIWG has investigated fundamental questions of the history of knowl- edge from the Neolithic to the present. The focus has been on the history of the natu- ral sciences, but recent projects have also integrated the history of technology and the history of the human sciences into a more panoramic view of the history of knowl- edge. Of central interest is the emergence of basic categories of scientific thinking and practice as well as their transformation over time: examples include experiment, ob- servation, normalcy, space, evidence, biodiversity or force.
