It analyses the concepts of class, nation and folk in his writings, and provides an account of their shifting literary representation between 1840 and 1890. For the first time in recent criticism, it analyses all of Freytag's published work - his poetry, dramas, novels, theatrical theory, journalism, and historical and biographical studies. The thesis reveals a coherent anti-aristocratic position III Freytag's fiction, expressed through a thematic preoccupation with inter-class relationships. It argues that Freytag's love stories encode in the domestic a political polemic which presents German society as undergoing a process of radical bourgeoisification. It traces how Freytag's class concerns are increasingly nationalised after the revolutions of 1848, and explores how his Nachmarz writing constructs a concept of German national identity based on a sense of common German values. It argues that Freytag's later preoccupation with German history allowed him to synthesise his twin concerns of class and nation into a pseudo-philosophical concept termed the Volkskraft - a myth of German folk identity which is shown to be central to Freytag's final historical and literary works. It is a central contention of this project that Freytag's texts not only reflect issues of class, nation and the folk, but that these concepts were key to the coherent political agenda he wished to disseminate through his writing. It is argued that Freytag's works present a systematic attempt to re-imagine the social and political structures of Germany, positioning the bourgeoisie at the heart of the German nation state. Ultimately, Freytag is shown to promote a significantly more radical concept of socio­ political relations in German society than research into his work has hitherto acknowledged. v Acknowledgements Above all, my thanks go to my supervIsor, Professor Michael Perraudin, whose constant guidance, enthusiasm and critical insight have been pivotal throughout this project. It would be carrying coals to Newcastle if I tried to go further into the significance of the incom- parable eddic poems. I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. This also bears witness to his search for the meaning and essence of the genuinely mythical, its very foundation. Hamilton Sociology Between 1838 and 1857 language scholars throughout Europe were inspired to create a new kind of dictionary. Deemed historical dictionaries, their projects took an unprecedented leap in style and scale from earlier forms of lexicography. These lexicographers each sought to compile historical inventories of their national languages and were inspired by the new scientific approach of comparative philology. For them, this science promised a means to illuminate general processes of social change and variation, as well as the linguistic foundations for cultural and national unity. This study examines two such projects: The German Dictionary, Deutsches Worterbuch, of the Grimm Brothers, and what became the Oxford English Dictionary. Both works utilized collaborative models of large-scale, long-term production, yet the content of the dictionaries would differ in remarkable ways. The German dictionary would be characterized by its lack of definitions of meaning, its eclectic treatment of entries, rich analytical prose, and self- referential discourse; whereas the English dictionary would feature succinct, standardized, and impersonal entries. Using primary source materials, this research investigates why the dictionaries came to differ.

Pendas This dissertation examines the relationship between Black America and East Germany from 1949 to 1989, exploring the ways in which two unlikely partners used international solidarity to achieve goals of domestic importance. Despite the growing number of works addressing the black experience in and with Imperial Germany, Nazi Germany, West Germany, and contemporary Germany, few studies have devoted attention to the black experience in and with East Germany. In this work, the outline of this transatlantic relationship is defined, detailing who was involved in the friendship, why they were involved, and what they hoped to gain from this alliance.

    Germanistisches Seminar Wintersemester 2012/13 Dr. Heiko Ullrich Wilhelm Raabe und der historische Roman Wilhelm Raabe and the Historical Novel Mo, 18:15-19:45 Beginn: 15.10.2012 Raum: PB SR 123 Gegenstand: Wilhelm Raabe (1831-1910) gilt neben Theodor Fontane, Theodor Storm, Gottfried Keller, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer und Adalbert Stifter als einer der bedeutendsten Prosaiker des Poetischen Realismus. Zugleich ist er ein wichtiger Vertreter des im 19. Jahrhundert äußerst populären historischen Romans in der Nachfolge Walter Scotts („Waverley“, 1814) und steht hier in einer Reihe mit James Fenimore Cooper, Wilhelm Hauff, Willibald Alexis, Victor Hugo, Alessandro Manzoni, Leo Tolstoi, Felix Dahn und Henryk Sienkiewicz. Im Zentrum des Lektürekurses sollen drei kurze historische Romane aus dem Spätwerk Wilhelm Raabes stehen, die nach ihrem Schauplatz häufig als „Wesertrias“ bezeichnet werden: „Höxter und Corvey“ (1879), „Das Odfeld“ (1888) und „Hastenbeck“ (1899). Auf eine allgemeine Einführung in die Poetik und Gattungsgeschichte des historischen Romans im 19. Jahrhundert und sein antikes Vorbild (die „Aeneis“ Vergils) sowie in die Biographie und das Werk Wilhelm Raabes soll eine eingehende gemeinsame Lektüre, Textanalyse und Interpretation der drei genannten Erzählungen folgen. The International Geophysical Year (1957–8) transformed research on the aurora, one of nature’s most elusive and intensely beautiful phenomena. Aurorae became the center of interest for the big science of powerful rockets, complex satellites and large group efforts to understand the magnetic and charged particle environment of the earth. The auroral visoplot displayed here provided guidance for recording observations in a standardized form, translating the sublime aesthetics of pictorial depictions of aurorae into the mechanical aesthetics of numbers and symbols. Most of the portait photographs were taken by Skúli Sigurdsson RESEARCH REPORT 2010—2012 MAX-PLANCK-INSTITUT FÜR WISSENSCHAFTSGESCHICHTE Max Planck Institute for the History of Science Introduction The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) is made up of three Departments, each administered by a Director, and several Independent Research Groups, each led for five years by an outstanding junior scholar. Since its foundation in 1994 the MPIWG has investigated fundamental questions of the history of knowl- edge from the Neolithic to the present. The focus has been on the history of the natu- ral sciences, but recent projects have also integrated the history of technology and the history of the human sciences into a more panoramic view of the history of knowl- edge. Of central interest is the emergence of basic categories of scientific thinking and practice as well as their transformation over time: examples include experiment, ob- servation, normalcy, space, evidence, biodiversity or force.
