INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page{s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image.

  • Senior Sophister Options 2018-19
SENIOR SOPHISTER OPTIONS 2018-19 Mary Cosgrove, Perspectives on New Economy Capitalism in Contemporary German-language literature and film Emerging from the major financial challenges of unification and against global trends, the German economy has been thriving since the turn of the millennium. Yet recent and contemporary German-language literature and film has tended to feature the “new economy”, or neoliberal capitalism as it is also known, as highly problematic, a global force that has been eroding the fabric of local and individual everyday life since the fall of the Wall. In their works, German-language writers and filmmakers scratch the surface of wealthy Germany (and by implication the wealthy West), exposing the extreme pressures and affective realities that new economy capitalism bring to bear on the worker-consumer. The primary texts and films on the course offer a differentiated overview of this critical field of cultural production. They cover topics such as: the financial aftermath of unification and the spectre of the GDR in contemporary capitalist Germany (Petzold, Hein, Bauder); the commercialisation of Holocaust memory in the Berlin Republic (Hanika); the precariousness of existence as a white-collar employee of a multinational company (Röggla, Mora, Losmann); global high finance and the global city (Hochhäusler); new neoliberal identities, such as the “entrepreneurial self” (Nawrat). Secondary literature and theoretical texts will include reflection on: the defining features of neoliberal capitalism; the corrosion of character in the new economy; time and 24/7 culture in the digital era; the abstraction of finance capitalism and the question of how to represent it in film / literature; place, non-place and the body.

  • Realismus Und Moderne in Der Kleinen Prosa Von Robert Musils Nachlaß Zu Lebzeiten
1 Dirk Göttsche Realismus und Moderne in der Kleinen Prosa von Robert Musils Nachlaß zu Lebzeiten Abstract This study proposes a new approach to Robert Musil’s engagement with the tradition of (German) Realism. It shifts the focus from his novellas and his novel Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften to the short prose of his Nachlaß zu Lebzeiten (1936) while also developing a conceptual framework for the analysis of (legacies of) „Realism in Modernism“. In the first part of the essay a critical review of the 1970/80s debate about Musil’s realism paves the way for a reassessment of the relationship between Realism and Modernism in German literature in general and in Musil’s work in particular. The second part discusses Musil’s Nachlaß zu Lebzeiten as an example of the function of elements of Realism in modernist short prose while also suggesting a rereading of the history of literary Realism from the perspective of the 19th century prose sketch and recent research in comparative literature.

Reviewed by Imke Meyer, Bryn Mawr College In her study, The Art of Taking a Walk, Anke Gleber seeks to “delineate a history of perception and representation in modernity by analyzing one of its significant modes of observation, that of ‘flanerie’” (vii). The book “argues that the flâneur, as a product of modernity, experiences city streets as interiors” (vii). This thesis is indebted to Walter Benjamin’s observations on the figure of the flâneur. Gleber intends to facilitate “a broader understanding of the specific cultural context within which [the figure of the flâneur] emerged,” and she wants to contribute to a redefinition of “our conception of the intersections among modernity, vision, and public spaces” (vii).
