SPRING 2017 COURSE LISTING GRMN0110 Intensive Beginning German Jane Sokolosky Students who wish to complete the GRMN 0100-0200 sequence in one semester may do so by enrolling in GRMN 0110 for two semester course credits. There are six hours per week in small drill sections conducted by fluent undergraduate teaching apprentices. Another three hours of class will be conducted by the faculty instructor. Students must register for both the lecture section and one conference. S01 TuTh 9-10:20 C01 MWF 1-2:50 C02 MWF 1-2:50 GRMN0200 Beginning German Jane Sokolosky A course in the language and cultures of German-speaking countries. Four hours per week plus regular computer and listening comprehension work. At the end of the year, students will be able to communicate about everyday topics and participate in the annual film festival. This is the second half of a year-long course. Students must have taken GRMN 0100 to receive credit for this course. The final grade for this course will become the final grade for GRMN 0100. NEWSLETTER 1 Protestbrief an den König – die Göttinger Sieben GESCHICHTE Erinnern an die „Göttinger Sieben“ Zwei Denkmäler erinnern in Nie der sach sen noch heute an jene sieben Pro fes soren der www.klett.de Göttinger Georg-August-Uni versität, die un- ter dem Namen „Göttinger Sieben“ in die Ge schichte eingegangen sind. Während seit dem Jahr 1998 ein Fi gu ren en semble des Bildhauers Flo riano Bodi ni am nieder- sächsischen Landtag an die sieben Protes- tie ren den erinnert, mutet ein erst jüngst im Jahr 2011 von Günter Grass gestiftetes Denk- mal für die sieben Professoren auf dem Göt- tinger Uni-Campus eher abstrakt an. Sowohl Bodini als auch Grass verstehen ihre Skulp- turen als Denk mäler für Mut und Zivil cou- rage. Bis heute werden die „Göttinger Sieben“ als aufrechte Vorkämpfer für bür gerliche Rech te und demokratische Freiheiten be- trachtet. Ihre Protest aktion gegen den König von Han nover im Jahr 1837 gilt als mutiges Signal im Kampf gegen die ab solutis tische Fürstenwillkür. Schon bei den Zeitgenossen erregte ihr Protest große Aufmerksamkeit. Und auch in späteren Jahren blieb ihre Po- pularität nahezu ungebrochen. Kistner University of Washington Abstract Organizing Knowledge: Comparative Structures of Intersubjectivity in Nineteenth-Century Historical Dictionaries Kelly Kistner Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Gary G. Hamilton Sociology Between 1838 and 1857 language scholars throughout Europe were inspired to create a new kind of dictionary. Deemed historical dictionaries, their projects took an unprecedented leap in style and scale from earlier forms of lexicography. These lexicographers each sought to compile historical inventories of their national languages and were inspired by the new scientific approach of comparative philology. For them, this science promised a means to illuminate general processes of social change and variation, as well as the linguistic foundations for cultural and national unity. This study examines two such projects: The German Dictionary, Deutsches Worterbuch, of the Grimm Brothers, and what became the Oxford English Dictionary. Both works utilized collaborative models of large-scale, long-term production, yet the content of the dictionaries would differ in remarkable ways. The German dictionary would be characterized by its lack of definitions of meaning, its eclectic treatment of entries, rich analytical prose, and self- referential discourse; whereas the English dictionary would feature succinct, standardized, and impersonal entries. Using primary source materials, this research investigates why the dictionaries came to differ. -

Pendas This dissertation examines the relationship between Black America and East Germany from 1949 to 1989, exploring the ways in which two unlikely partners used international solidarity to achieve goals of domestic importance. Despite the growing number of works addressing the black experience in and with Imperial Germany, Nazi Germany, West Germany, and contemporary Germany, few studies have devoted attention to the black experience in and with East Germany. In this work, the outline of this transatlantic relationship is defined, detailing who was involved in the friendship, why they were involved, and what they hoped to gain from this alliance. -
