Dedicated to the memory of my parents ii ABSTRACT The manufacture of horse riding saddlery in the UK is centred in Walsall in the West Midlands. The local industry faces stiff competition from cheap imports in local markets and dwindling exports to international markets. To continue to provide affordable high end products, which the local industry is reputed for, it is essential to develop an understanding of the functional and performance requirements of the saddletree based on scientific and engineering methods thereby laying a foundation for a methodical approach to product development. Through the measurement of surface data from a physical artefact, a 3 dimensional CAD geometrical replica of the English jumping saddletree was developed. Assumptions for the loading and boundary conditions identical to the user environment were obtained from available literature on the movements of the horseback, parameters for a jumping horse, saddletree test data, and, interface contact measurements acquired using a pressure mat. In addition, material properties data were obtained from available literature. Nonlinear static numerical models were subsequently developed and parametric studies were performed to determine the relationship between the deformation of the saddletree and the bending loads. Furthermore, nonlinear transient dynamic numerical models were developed and parametric studies performed to determine the response of the pommel to impact loads. The models were found to be sensitive to loading, material, and geometric iii parameters. From cantilever tests, the stiffness of the saddletree was found to be between 3.63 N/mm and 4.68 N/mm, and the steel reinforcement plates increased the stiffness by a factor of up to 2.3 times. Simply supported, the stiffness of the saddletree was between 526.62 N/mm and 596.16 N/mm, and the steel reinforcement plates increased the stiffness by a factor of up to 5.5 times. In addition, the simply supported models were sensitive to the wood laminate stacking sequence. Furthermore, the dynamic models showed that the steel reinforcement plates dampened the oscillations in the pommel after impact with a rigid body at 7 m/s, 8.5 m/s, and 10 m/s. The numerical cantilever models were validated with experimental data while interface pressure mat measurements validated interface contact stresses between the deformable bodies and the rigid body surfaces. Interface pressure mat results exhibited pressure hot spots and uneven load distributions underneath the saddletree. Peak and average pressures were 82.7 KPa and 15.4 KPa respectively, representing 16.2 % and 10.0 % error in comparison with the contact stresses obtained from the numerical models. Compression-flexure tests complemented the dynamic models. The steel reinforcement plates were observed to protect the pommel from delamination which was the principal failure mode of the wooden pommel; however, the reinforced pommel failed in flexure. From the simulations and tests performed, it was evident that there is a stiffness mismatch between the saddletree and the horseback which is undesirable. In addition to this significant conclusion, it has been shown that the steel reinforcement plates have a significant effect on the stiffness of the saddletree and do not protect it from iv failing. Hence, their continued use in the design and manufacturing of the English jumping saddletree is not recommended. Invaluable knowledge gained from the research allowed the definition of the performance attributes in a materials selection process ensuring the choice of potential material candidates to guarantee the optimal performance of the saddletree. Finally, the findings were incorporated in the development of a new concept design for next generation English saddletrees. v ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I am sincerely grateful to Professor F.     Doug Calton’s McClellan Saddle By John K. Haws Jr. When Doug Calton was a boy living in Cedar Fort, he enjoyed all the outdoor activities that a life in Cedar Fort provided. The open fields provided all kinds of adventures. It was the period after World War I but before World War II that Doug grew up in Cedar Fort. Doug loved life to the fulles. One of his best friends who loved the out­of­doors as much as he did was my mother. Shirley Smith (Haws) was best buds with Doug. He reported that she was the only person that could whip him. She would often ride horses behind him. They had great fun growing up and they were always in trouble. One of the problems of riding horses was that he didn’t have a saddle. His father Kelsey Calton either wanted to provide him one or was tired of him using his, purchased either through trade or money this used saddle. The saddle was from a Lehi World War I veteran who had used the saddle in the war. Doug does not know the name of the veteran, but he was thrilled with the saddle. The McClellan saddles were first designed for the Civil War. It was limited because most soldiers had to provide their own saddles. In 1863, the Confederate army issued the lighter and better­contoured McClellan saddle to its cavalry. Because leather was scarce in the South during the Civil War, many of the McClellan saddles had skirts of painted canvas. Indianapolis, 1995 Lucy sat down at one of the few empty tables on the perimeter of the hotel bar and hoped none of the waitresses would notice her. She was fifteen years old, and even wearing the makeup she’d taken from her mother’s vanity, she knew her chances of getting served a drink were remote. Worse, she was taking up real estate that legal customers willing to pay ten dollars for a mediocre glass of wine could have inhabited. And there were plenty of them about, the bar nearly full and the hotel lobby bustling with well-dressed adults older than her mom. The convention didn’t technically begin until tomorrow morning, so none of them wore name badges. But she felt sure her eyes were passing over famous mystery writers, perhaps even people she’d read. The man she’d come to see, Andrew Z. Thomas, the convention’s guest of honor, for whom she’d stolen her mother’s car and driven six hundred miles on a learner’s permit, had yet to make his appearance.

Others have names from the type of unit and the role played as light or heavy cavalry (Scots Dragoon Guards; French 4e Régiment de Chasseurs). Some are associated with places (The Ontario Regiment; South Alberta Light Horse). We belong to a small group that is identified with an individual (Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry; Governor General's Horse Guards). What makes the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) unique is that we are named after an individual who used his own money to raise a unit to fight in a foreign war. That individual had an exceptional impact on Canada’s future. Whether it was his association with the exploration of the west through the Hudson’s Bay Company, his singular vote in Parliament that ousted a government, or his driving of the Last Spike of the Canadian Pacific Railroad, there is no question that Donald Smith, Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal was an extraordinary individual. The soldiers that carried his name into battle in the Boer War were unique in their own right.
