Introduction According to the Canonical Binding Theory (Chomsky, 1981) anaphors must be bound in their local domain (governing category) and pronominals must be free. The discovery of “long-distance anaphors” (e.g. Thrainsson, 1976; Giorgi, 1984), which violate the locality condition, induced the search for independent criteria. Giorgi (1984: 310) proposed a widely adopted operational test: “pronouns can have split antecedents and anaphors cannot”. An antecedent is split if it consists of (at least) two DPs, which occupy separate argument positions, as in (1): while in Italian the 3rd person plural pronominal li does allow split antecedents, the anaphor se stessi does not. (1) a. Giannii comunicò a Marioj che l’azienda lii+j aveva licenziati. Gianni told Mario that the factory had fired them. b. *Giannii ha ricondotto Mariaj a se stessii+j. Gianni brought back Maria to themselves. (Giorgi, 1984: 310) Recent minimalist binding theories derive this property of anaphors from the way a dependency on the antecedent is established – via Agree (Rooryck & Vanden Wyngaerd, 2011), movement (Hornstein, 2000) or SELF-movement and Agree-based chains (Reuland, 2011). However, this leads to an important problem, since some languages have elements that i) may be locally bound and thus seem to behave like anaphors; yet ii) allow split antecedents which is a property of pronominals (e.g. Japanese and Korean, see Katada, 1991; Kasai, 2000). To resolve this problem, it is crucial to carry out in-depth studies of languages with such elements – I call them semi-reflexives – and assess which factors are involved. In the present paper I review data from one such language, namely Meadow Mari (Uralic).

    £BHUTAN @Appeal for the Release of Tek Nath Rizal: Prisoner of Conscience Tek Nath Rizal, a prisoner of conscience and a former member of the National Assembly and Royal Advisory Council, is spending his fourth year in prison in Bhutan. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on 16 November 1993, but granted a pardon by King Jigme Singye Wangchuck three days later. However, the pardon was made conditional on the Governments of Nepal and Bhutan resolving the problem of the southern Bhutanese refugees living in refugee camps in Nepal. In January 1994, he was transferred to Chamgang prison from Thimphu Central prison where he had been reportedly held in handcuffs. Amnesty International believes that he is a prisoner of conscience held for the peaceful exercise of his rights to freedom of expression and association and is calling for his immediate and unconditional release. Tek Nath Rizal was sentenced to life imprisonment on 16 November 1993 by the High Court in Thimphu after a trial which lasted 10 months. He was found guilty of four out of nine offences under the Thrimshung Chhenpo (General Law of the Land) and the National Security Act 1992. The charges of which he was found guilty included treasonable acts against the Tsa-Wa-Sum (King, Country and People), attempts to create misunderstanding or hostility between Bhutan and friendly countries, and "sowing communal discord" between different communities in the Kingdom. Tek Nath Rizal had been first arrested in 1988 after petitioning the King about alleged unfair practices adopted during the 1988 census operation, including retroactive application of the 1985 Citizenship Act.

    Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

Matthews, Candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2018 ABSTRACT Of the many forms of human behavior, perhaps none more than those of force and fraud have caused so much harm in both social and ecological environments. In spite of this, neither shows signs of weakening given their current level of toleration. Nonetheless, what can be said in respect to the use of force in the West is that it has lost most of its competitiveness. While competitive force ruled in the preceding epoch, this category of violence has now been reduced to a relatively negligible degree. On the other hand, the same cannot be said of fraud. In fact, it appears that it has moved in the other direction and become more prevalent. The causes for this movement will be the fundamental question directing the inquiry. In the process, this dissertation will trace historical events and methods of control ranging from the use of direct force, to the use of ceremonies and rituals and to the use of the methods of law. An additional analysis of transformation will also be undertaken with regards to risk-sharing-agrarian-based societies to individual-risk-factory-based ones.
