Abstract Since the constituent Conference in October 1863, which gave birth to the Red Cross,1 the International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent has met on thirty occasions. The first meeting took place in Paris in 1867 and the thirtieth in Geneva in November 2007. What contribution has the Conference made to the development of international humanitarian law and humanitarian action? What are the main challenges that the Conference has had to face?     The Interface of Religious and Political Conflict in Egyptian Theatre

    The Interface of Religious and Political Conflict in Egyptian Theatre Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Amany Youssef Seleem, Stage Directing Diploma Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Lesley Ferris, Advisor Nena Couch Beth Kattelman Copyright by Amany Seleem 2013 Abstract Using religion to achieve political power is a thematic subject used by a number of Egyptian playwrights. This dissertation documents and analyzes eleven plays by five prominent Egyptian playwrights: Tawfiq Al-Hakim (1898- 1987), Ali Ahmed Bakathir (1910- 1969), Samir Sarhan (1938- 2006), Mohamed Abul Ela Al-Salamouni (1941- ), and Mohamed Salmawi (1945- ). Through their plays they call attention to the dangers of blind obedience. The primary methodological approach will be a close literary analysis grounded in historical considerations underscored by a chronology of Egyptian leadership. Thus the interface of religious conflict and politics is linked to the four heads of government under which the playwrights wrote their works: the eras of King Farouk I (1920-1965), President Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918-1970), President Anwar Sadat (1918-1981), and President Hosni Mubarak (1928- ). While this study ends with Mubarak’s regime, it briefly considers the way in which such conflict ended in the recent reunion between religion and politics with the election of Mohamed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, as president following the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. This research also investigates how these scripts were written— particularly in terms of their adaptation from existing canonical work or historical events and the use of metaphor—and how they were staged.

    6 Fredsinsatser Med anledning av det svenska engagemanget i fredsinsatser1 och Försvarsmaktens ökade fokus på deltagande i sådana insatser har folkrättsliga frågor kring denna verksamhet blivit allt mer viktiga för Sverige. Dagens fredsinsatser baseras oftast på ett mandat antaget under FN-stadgans kapitel VII, vilket bl.a. innebär att de ges en rätt att använda våld som inte är begränsat till självförsvar utan också innefattar sådant våld som behövs för att lösa de i mandatet definierade uppgifterna. Trots detta deltar styrkorna sällan i fientligheter på en sådan nivå att den humanitära rätten kan anses formellt tillämplig. Som beskrivits i kapitel 2.1.3 är det förekomsten av en väpnad konflikt som aktualiserar den formella tillämpningen av krigets lagar. (Se kapitel 2 för närmare resone- mang kring definitionen av en väpnad konflikt.) Enligt våra direktiv ska vi vid den kartläggning av de folk- rättsliga regler som gäller för väpnade konflikter, ockupation och neutralitet bl.a. belysa den internationella humanitära rättens tillämplighet i fredsfrämjande insatser. I detta kapitel tar vi upp vissa principiella frågeställningar som fredsinsatser väcker i för- hållande till den humanitära rätten och delar av de mänskliga rättigheterna. Vi har emellertid blivit informerade om att avsikten är att frågan om rättsliga grunder för vålds- och tvångsanvändning av svensk militär personal och poliser i fredsinsatser ska behandlas av en särskild utredning, varför vi i vår framställning inte går in i detaljresonemang kring dessa frågor. 1 Med fredsinsatser menar vi främst militära insatser som baseras på ett mandat från FN:s säkerhetsråd oavsett vilken aktör (FN, EU eller NATO) som leder insatsen.

Findley, Advisor Jane Hathaway Alan Beyerchen Copyright By Serdar Poyraz 2010 i Abstract My dissertation, entitled “Science versus Religion: The Influence of European Materialism on Turkish Thought, 1860-1960,” is a radical re-evaluation of the history of secularization in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. I argue that European vulgar materialist ideas put forward by nineteenth-century intellectuals and scientists such as Ludwig Büchner (1824-1899), Karl Vogt (1817-1895) and Jacob Moleschott (1822-1893) affected how Ottoman and Turkish intellectuals thought about religion and society, ultimately paving the way for the radical reforms of Kemal Atatürk and the strict secularism of the early Turkish Republic in the 1930s. In my dissertation, I challenge traditional scholarly accounts of Turkish modernization, notably those of Bernard Lewis and Niyazi Berkes, which portray the process as a Manichean struggle between modernity and tradition resulting in a linear process of secularization. On the basis of extensive research in modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish and Persian sources, I demonstrate that the ideas of such leading westernizing and secularizing thinkers as Münif Pasha (1830-1910), Beşir Fuad (1852-1887) and Baha Tevfik (1884-1914) who were inspired by European materialism provoked spirited religious, philosophical and literary responses from such conservative anti-materialist thinkers as Şehbenderzade ii Ahmed Hilmi (1865-1914), Said Nursi (1873-1960) and Ahmed Hamdi Tanpınar (1901- 1962).

    Culture and Cultural Politics Under Reza Shah Culture and Cultural Politics Under Reza Shah presents a collection of innovative research on the interaction of culture and politics accompanying the vigorous modernization program of the first Pahlavi ruler. Examining a broad spectrum of this multifaceted interaction it makes an important contribution to the cultural history of the 1920s and 1930s in Iran, when, under the rule of Reza Shah Pahlavi, dramatic changes took place inside Iranian society. With special reference to the practical implementation of specific reform endeavors, the various contributions critically analyze different facets of the relationship between cultural politics, individual reformers, and the everyday life of modernist Iranians. Interpreting culture in its broadest sense, this book brings together con- tributions from different disciplines such as literary history, social history, ethnomusicology, art history, and Middle Eastern politics. In this way, it combines for the first time the cultural history of Iran’s modernity with the politics of the Reza Shah period. Challenging a limited understanding of authoritarian rule under Reza Shah, this book is a useful contribution to existing literature for students and scholars of Middle Eastern History, Iranian History, and Iranian Culture.
