  • The Legacy of SS. Cyril and Methodius in the Counterreformation
Francis J. Thomson The Legacy of SS. Cyril and Methodius in the Counterreformation The council of Trent and the question of Scripture and liturgy in the Vernacular, together with an account of the subsequent consequences for the Slavo-Latin (glagolitic) rite and the Bible in Croatian translation Nominibus auctorum aut oblivioni aut fabulis traditis, res autem manebat. Eleutherius Scotus Summary At the time of the Reformation the use of modern vernaculars in Scripture and liturgy became one of the hallmarks of Protestantism. When the Old Testament had been translated into Greek and the New into Latin those languages had been vernaculars but their use could be justified by an appeal to the trilingual super- scription on the Cross. This, of course, could not be invoked for the use of the Glagolitic rite in Slavonic in Croatia, Dalmatia and Istria but it was widely be- lieved in the 16th century that St. Jerome had translated the Old Testament not only into Latin but also into his native "Dalmatian", viz. Slavonic, a fact first referred to in the Reformation controversies by Hieronymus Emser in 1524 in his rejection of Martin Luther's form of the mass of 1523. This Hieronymian theory of the origin of the Glagolitic rite remained unchallenged at the Council of Trent and meant that a vernacular translation could not per se be banned. The debates at the Council and the differences between the draft decrees and the final versions are examined: in the latter there is no longer any reference to Latin as a divine instrument consecrated by its use on the Cross or to the greater reverence for the holy mysteries which its use instilled.

Chisholm A QUESTION OF POWER: COUNT, ARISTOCRACY AND BISHOP OF TRENT THE PROGRESS OF ARCHDUKE FERDINAND II INTO THE TYROL IN 15671 Following the death of Emperor Ferdinand I on 25 July, 1564, his son, Archduke Ferdinand II, succeeded him as Count of the Tyrol. The new prince wrote the Upper Austrian Privy Council (Regierung) in Innsbruck three days later from Prague, where he was still Gov- ernor of Bohemia.2 He noted that his arrival would be delayed and or- 1 I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Manfred Rupert of the Ti- roler Landesarchiv (TLA) for the many hours he has helped me to read and deci- pher Old German. 2 The Privy Council was the head of the Upper Austrian government. Its au- thority extended over the territorial complex of the Tyrol and Further Austria. The Privy Council was centred in the Tyrolean capital, Innsbruck; the Further Austrian government, centred in the Alsatian town, Ensisheim, was administra- tively subordinate to the Privy Council. Hence, the archduke, as his father, cor- responded with the Privy Council in regard to both Tyrolean and Further Austri- an affairs. However, contemporaries also referred to the Council loosely as the “Tyrolean Privy Council”, as for example, when the archduke addressed a letter to unsern Tyrolischen Regierung; TLA, Ferdinandea, Position 23, Carton 28, 19 November, 1566. The association of the Privy Council with the Tyrol was no doubt a habit of mind, as it was centred in the Tyrol, dominated by Tyroleans and almost two-thirds of its business was taken up by the Tyrol: TLA, An die Fürstli- che Durchlaucht (AFD), 19 October, 1565, fol.

  • Peace in the Post-Reformation
PINA01 04/08/1998 10:47 AM Page i Peace in the Post-Reformation Christians are supposed to love their neighbours, including their enemies. This is never easy. When feud and honour are common realities, it is even harder than usual. This book sketches the history of peacemaking between people (not countries) as an activity of churches or of Christianity between the Reformation and the eighteenth century. The story is recounted in four countries (Italy, France, Germany and England) and in several religious settings (including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Church of England and Calvinist). Each version is a variation upon a theme: what the author calls a ‘moral tradition’ which contrasts, as a continuing imperative, with the novelties of theory and practice introduced by the sixteenth-century reformers. In general the topic has much to say about the destinies of Christianity in each country, and more widely, and strikes a chord which will resonate in both the social and the religious history of the West. John Bossy is Professor of History, University of York. His many publications include The English Catholic Community, – (), Christianity in the West, – () and Giordano Bruno and the Embassy Affair () which shared the Wolfson Prize. Derleme | Review A THEME OF COUNTER-REFORMATION IN WESTERN ART: MARY OF LORETO BATI SANATINDA BİR KARŞI-REFORMASYON TEMASI: LORETO MERYEM’İ Tüles ÜRESİN* Abstract This article is an attempt to examine the depictions of Mary of Loreto, as a theme that mainly found in Italian art, its emergence and relation to the religious environment of the period in which it emerged, as well as its transformations within the context of the Counter-Reformation principles. The first examples of its appearing in the period of Counter-Reformation, the theme of Mary of Loreto increased its effect throughout the same period by introducing Loreto as a Catholic center of pilgrimage. Several approches to the Marian cult, such as the one that postulated by the Catholic Church in accordance with decisions of the Council of Trent and the approaches of the Jesuits and Franciscans are also the subjects to be discussed here, due to their important roles in the development of the cult. Following a short explanation on the legend of the Holy House (Santa Casa) in the Holy Land and the protection of Santa Casa during the Crusades, the article dwells on the architecture and the architectural decoration of Sanctuary of the Holy House (Basilica della Santa Casa) which moved from Nazareth to Loreto. Starting from the earliest examples of Mary of Loreto, the main part of the study defines the forms of the scene in terms of presentation by focusing on the development of the Marian cult within the framework of the Counter-Reformation principles.
