To thank you is not merely enough. ___________________ Clayton Parks St. Louis, Missouri 09/01/2015 iii SUMMARY This research seeks to answer the question: How do the spiritual practices of Sadhu Sundar Singh and the Desert Fathers compare with each other and what are the implications of appropriating Christian mystic practices in the Church today? This study utilizes the method of phenomenology to solve the research problem by identifying and analyzing relevant literary data in order to explore God’s interactions with man through Sadhu Sundar Singh and the Desert Fathers. First, a literature review explores the current status of scholarly research into the personalities and histories of the legendary Christian figures of Sadhu Sundar Singh and the Desert Fathers. A literature review reveals that within several areas of current scholarship, gaps appear and no substantial inquiry regarding the similarities and differences of spiritual practices between Sadhu Sundar Singh and the Desert Fathers is found. Therefore, the need for research into this specific area finds validation. Second, a survey of the lives and theology of Sadhu Sundar Singh and the Desert Fathers is provided in order to introduce readers to the personalities and histories of the legendary Christian figures. Third, a detailed analysis is conducted of the textual examples of documented prayer and meditation, visions and miracles, and self-deprivation undertaken by Sadhu Sundar Singh and the Desert Fathers. Fourth, a comparative analysis of the spiritual practices of Sadhu Sundar Singh and the Desert Fathers is provided, followed by a critical assessment of Christian mystic practices appropriated in the Church today. Finally, a summary is provided of the research findings, including the theological and practical value of studying the spiritual practices of these Christian legends, as well as the pros and cons of appropriating Christian mystic practices in the Church today. The Byzantine rite, in its shape already largely present in Barberini gr. 336, actually comprises three major liturgical elements: 1) consecration of the altar; 2) consecration of the church building; 3) deposition of relics. Our earliest Byzantine liturgical text clearly conceives of the consecration of the altar and the deposition of the relics/“renovation” (encaenia) as two distinct rites, not merely elements of a single ritual. This feature of the Barberini text raises an important question, namely, which of these major elements did in fact constitute the act of dedicating/ consecrating the church, and what role did the deposition of relics have in the ceremonies of dedication in the early period of Byzantine liturgical history, considering that the deposition of relics Vitalijs Permjakovs became a mandatory element of the dedication rite only after the provisions to that effect were made at the Second council of Nicaea in 787 CE.

Abstract THE SPIRITUAL ANTHROPOLOGY OF JOHN CASSIAN PHD THESIS SUBMITTED BY J114HAKIM This thesis is an investigation into the spiritual anthropology of John Cassian, who composed two monastic works, the Institutes and the Conferences.Although Cassian transmits the teachings of the Egyptian desert fathers living in the later fourth century, many polemical mind-sets, from his Latin contemporaries to modem critics, have not been able simply to accept his delivery with a spirit of respect and support. In his texts, the doctrine of free will and grace has been judged to be Semi-Pelagian through the viewpoint of Augustinian orthodoxy. Moreover, since Salvatore Marsili's comparative study in the 1930s, it has been accepted that Cassian's ascetic theology depended heavily on the writings of Evagrius Ponticus. Thus, the authenticity of his texts has been obscured for over fifteen hundred years in the West. Consequently, they have been regarded as second-class materials in the primitive desert monastic literature. This thesis re-examines the above settled convictions, and attempts to defend Cassian'srepeated statements that he wrote what he had seen and heard in the desert.

    one H esychasm i e are distinguished from other animals by our inex- Whaustible quest for self-knowledge. We possess an inner reflective power that drives us in a relentless search for a meaningful existence. Instinct is the driving force in an animal to hunt for food, to mate and perpetuate the species, and to build a dwelling place of protection from other marauding animals. But only human beings possess the intellectual and volitional faculties that allow us to ask the one question that other animals cannot ask: Why do I exist? We can rove over the earth, conquering oceans, moun- tains, and all conceivable natural forces. But eventually we must return to ourselves and enter within to search for the talisman that will unlock the hidden treasures of unending happiness. However, what most of us experience when we do “return to ourselves” is a general spirit of emptiness. Dr. Rollo May described this general malaise: . the chief problem of people in the middle decade of the twentieth century is emptiness. By 11 12 P RAYER OF THE H EART that I mean not only that many people do not know what they want; they often do not have any clear idea of what they feel. When they talk about lack of autonomy, or lament their inability to make decisions—difficulties which are present in all decades—it soon becomes evident that their underlying problem is that they have no definite experience of their own desires or wants. Thus they feel swayed this way and that, with painful feelings of powerlessness, because they feel vacuous, empty.1 MEANINGLESSNESS A universal angst or anxiety fills the heart of modern man with a sense of a loss of direction, of meaninglessness.
