Goldfrank This essay originated at the time that ASEC was in its early stages and in response to a requestthat I write something aboutthe church Fathers in medieval Rus'. I already knew finding the patrology concerning just the original Greek and Syriac texts is nothing short of a researcher’s black hole. Given all the complexities in­ volved in the manuscript traditions associated with such superstar names as Basil of Caesarea, Ephrem the Syrian, John Chrysostom, and Macarius of wherever (no kidding), to name a few1 and all of The author would like to thank the staffs of the Hilandar Research Library at The Ohio State University and, of course, the monks of Hilandar Monastery for encouraging the microfilming of the Hilandar Slavic manuscripts by Ohio State.     Steadfast and shrewd heroines: the defence of chastity in the Latin post-Nicene passions and the Greek novels ANNELIES BOSSU Ghent University 1. Introduction Over the past decades, the disparaging opinion of the Greek ‘ideal’ novels which goes back to at least Rohde’s pioneer modern study of 18761 has been abandoned: they are no longer viewed as literary inferior texts. Together with this renewed and favourable attention, research into the novels’ inter- connections with other ancient narrative texts increased. Unsurprisingly, the interplay with the Roman novel was explored. It includes an edition and an English translation of this text, which contains precious information about seven little-known ascetic fathers of this celebrated Palestinian monastery. Special attention is given to the ninth-century saint Eustratius of Mar Chariton, whose memory the Orthodox Church kept on 17 October. The Appendix includes an edition and an English translation of the Copto-Arabic version of the Vita of the same St. Eustratius.     THE ASTONISHING MISSIONARY JOURNEYS OF THE APOSTLE ANDREW George Alexandrou, international reporter, writer, and political commentator, on his thou- sand-page book in Greek, He Raised the Cross on the Ice, exploring the sources, traditions, routes and cultures of St. Andrew’s apostolate. George’s own enthusiasm and love for St. Andrew made our long months of working together more than an assignment, it became a shared pilgrimage. BEGINNINGS RTE: George, please tell us about your background and how you began this epic project of reconstructing St. Andrew’s journeys. GEORGE: Yes, but before I begin, I have to say that at certain times in my life I’ve been very blind. I can speak about the Taliban, about international pol- icy, about government leaders, but I’m not righteous enough to speak or write about St. Andrew. This is how I feel and I must say so at the beginning.
