Previous meetings • The sides are meeting for the first time in UEFA competition. • Freiburg's only previous experience of Czech opposition was a 1995/96 UEFA Cup first round game which they lost 2-1 on aggregate to SK Slavia Praha, going down 2-1 at home before a goalless draw in Prague. • Liberec's record in six previous games against German opponents is an unedifying W0 D2 L4; they have lost on all three of their previous visits to Germany, scoring two goals and conceding eight. Match background • Freiburg are making their first appearance in a UEFA competition group stage. Indeed, this is their first appearance in Europe since they reached the third round of the 2001/02 UEFA Cup, losing to eventual winners Feyenoord. • Freiburg have won only one of their four European home games to date, 2-1 against FK Púchov in the first round of the 2001/02 UEFA Cup; of the other three, they drew one and lost two, including that Slavia defeat. • Liberec failed to make it through to the round of 32 in their only previous group stage appearance in 2006/07. Their two away games in that competition ended in a 2-2 draw and a 4-0 defeat. • Liberec are unbeaten in their last five European games – four wins and a draw – and defeated Udinese Calcio in the play-offs to reach the group stage. They have won their last two away games. Team facts • Having left Czech champions FC Viktoria Plzeň for Freiburg in the summer, Vladimír Darida faces a quick reunion with familiar opponents in his first European game for his new club. • The 23-year-old midfielder has bad memories of past meetings with Jaroslav Šilhavý's side; a 0-0 draw against Liberec on the last day of the 2011/12 season meant Slovan claimed the title at Plzeň's expense, while their 2012/13 title celebrations were delayed following a 2-1 loss to Liberec in their penultimate game of the campaign. • Freiburg's Czech defender Pavel Krmaš and his Liberec counterpart Radoslav Kovác were briefly team-mates at AC Sparta Praha at the start of 2003/04. • Freiburg boast a third Czech talent in the form of midfielder Václav Pilař, who joined from VfL Wolfsburg in the summer. • Last season, Freiburg forward Admir Mehmedi and Liberec's Ukrainian duo of Vladyslav Kalitvintsev and Serhiy Rybalka were team-mates at FC Dynamo Kyiv. Coach information • A qualified teacher, coach Christian Streich played for Freiburg and their neighbours Freiburger FC as a midfielder, making a brief cameo appearance in the Bundesliga with FC Homburg 08 before moving into coaching. He took charge of Freiburg's youth team in 1995, later combining that role with work as the club's assistant coach before being given sole command in December 2011. He famously cycles to all of Freiburg's home games. • Hired in June 2011, Jaroslav Šilhavý led Liberec to the Czech title in his first season at the club; it was his first major title, with the coach having gained experience on the national team staff, and by taking charge of SK Kladno, hometown club Viktoria Plzeň and Dynamo České Budějovice. As a defender, he played a Czech record 465 league games for Plzeň, RH Cheb, Slavia Praha, Petra Drnovice and FK Viktoria Žižkov. 3 SC Freiburg - FC Slovan Liberec Thursday 19 September 2013 - 21.05CET, (21.05 local time) Match press kit Freiburg Stadion, Freiburg Team facts SC Freiburg Formed: 1904 Nickname: Breisgau-Brasilianer (Breisgau Brazilians) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • none Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) None Ten-year European record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2011/12: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2010/11: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2009/10: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2008/09: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2007/08: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2006/07: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2005/06: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2004/05: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2003/04: did not take part in UEFA club competition Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 2-1: Freiburg v FK Púchov 27/09/01, UEFA Cup first round second leg • Biggest away win 1-4: FC St Gallen v Freiburg 01/11/01, UEFA Cup second round second leg • Heaviest home defeat 1-2: Freiburg v SK Slavia Praha 12/09/95, UEFA Cup first round first leg 0-1: Freiburg v FC St Gallen 18/10/01, UEFA Cup second round first leg • Heaviest away defeat 2-0: Sevilla FC v Freiburg 03/10/13, UEFA Europa League group stage UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 2-1: Freiburg v FK Púchov (see above) • Biggest away win 1-4: FC St Gallen v Freiburg (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 1-2: Freiburg v SK Slavia Praha (see above) 0-1: Freiburg v FC St Gallen (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 2-0: Sevilla FC v Freiburg (see above) FC Slovan Liberec Formed: 1958 Nickname: Modrobílí (Blue and Whites) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • UEFA Intertoto Cup: 2004 Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 3 (2012) 4 SC Freiburg - FC Slovan Liberec Thursday 19 September 2013 - 21.05CET, (21.05 local time) Match press kit Freiburg Stadion, Freiburg Czech Cup: 1 (2000) Ten-year European record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2012/13: play-offs (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2011/12: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2010/11: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2009/10: play-offs 2008/09: second qualifying round 2007/08: UEFA Intertoto Cup second round 2006/07: group stage (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2005/06: UEFA Intertoto Cup second round 2004/05: UEFA Intertoto Cup finals 2003/04: UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-finals Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 5-0: Liberec v MFK Dubnica 10/07/04, UEFA Intertoto Cup second round second leg • Biggest away win 0-3 (default): FC Dinamo Bucureşti v Liberec 20/08/09, UEFA Europa League play-off first leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-3: Liberec v FC Dinamo Bucureşti 27/08/09, UEFA Europa League play-off second leg • Heaviest away defeat 4-0: SC Braga v Liberec 02/11/06, UEFA Cup group stage 4-0: Borussia Dortmund v Liberec 21/03/02, UEFA Cup quarter-finals second leg UEFA Cup/Europa League • Biggest home win 4-1: Liberec v Grasshopper Club 23/11/06, group stage 4-1: Liberec v Olympique Lyonnais 28/02/02, fourth round second leg 3-0: Liberec v RC Celta de Vigo 01/11/01, second round second leg • Biggest away win 0-3 (default): FC Dinamo Bucureşti v Liberec (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 0-3: Liberec v FC Dinamo Bucureşti (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 4-0: SC Braga v Liberec (see above) 4-0: Borussia Dortmund v Liberec (see above for details) 5 SC Freiburg - FC Slovan Liberec Thursday 19 September 2013 - 21.05CET, (21.05 local time) Match press kit Freiburg Stadion, Freiburg Squad list SC Freiburg Current season All-time QUAL Tournament League Tournament UEFA No.
