Swindon School Games Despite the wet weather we saw a fantastic day’s celebration of School Sport for Primary and Secondary Schools in Swindon on 27 June. The 3rd annual Swindon School Games was held at Lydiard Park Academy, Link Centre and Delta Tennis Centre. The event was organised by Wiltshire and Swindon Sport along with the School Games Organiser, Andy Steckbeck, Swindon Borough Council Sports Participation Manager, Doug Imrie, and many other partners. The event would not have been possible without the 50 Young Leaders involved giving up their time to support the event and play their part in officiating, marshalling and supporting the venue coordinators on the day. 74 Schools have already participated in the Winter Games Level 3 competitions from 49 Primary Schools and 25 Secondary Schools. These games involved 1300 pupils across the County participating in 7 Sports including Badminton, Hockey, Football and Basketball. The summer event on 27 June involved 700 students from 32 Schools across Swindon competing in 8 Sports including Orienteering, Trampolining and Volleyball to name but a few. Sporting Champion, Lesley Owusu, GB 400m Athlete opened the day with an inspirational speech to the young athletes and MP Justin Tomlinson also spoke between excellent musical performances from Commonweal School Band and the Dancers from Wroughton School’s modern dance piece. The School Games Mascot Ra Cat was a big hit with the young athletes having lots of hugs and Hi 5’s with everyone wanting their pictures taken with him. Ra Cat had a go on the trampoline too see if he could bounce as well as the young athletes!
