Chaplaincy Development Advisor Report: January – April 2019 Introduction Chaplaincy at Haygrove School I was recently asked which was the most significant of the fifteen new Feedback from the Head Teacher chaplaincies launched in 2018. There is no one single chaplaincy that I could identify; all are exciting, innovative, challenging, creative and ‘Patrick [the Chaplain at Haygrove] pioneering. However, one important area of growth is the ever has contributed so much to our increasing number of Chaplains in community schools. Once it was only community as a non-church school. Patrick has earned huge local government, few of which are Christian foundations. I give thanks respect in our community and has that this barrier is breaking down in schools. It is wonderful to see added a calming and reflective community schools affirming and celebrating the spiritual and pastoral element to our culture, which is care that Chaplains offer and to hear feedback such as I received from noticeable on the days when he is the Head Teacher at Haygrove School, Bridgwater. It is every bit as with us.’ exciting for us as Chaplains to be able to share the love of God with Karen Canham ever more young people and staff. I shall focus on some of the creativity we have valued in Bucks SACRE this year both from our members and during our visits to schools. In addition, we receive wise counsel from our Education Officer at Bucks CC, Katherine Wells and our RE Adviser Bill Moore. At our meeting in October we learned that Suma Din our Muslim deputy had become a school governor and would no longer fulfil her role with SACRE. However, her legacy to us is her book published by the Institute of Education Press entitled ‘Muslim Mothers and their children’s schooling.’ See SACRED 7, for a review. (For this and all other references to SACRED see the website at the end of this section). In her contribution to SACRED 6 Suma wrote; From the Qur’an, I understand my role as being a ‘steward’ on this earth; one who will take care, take responsibility and hand on a legacy to those who come after them. -

Newsletter December 2017 Principal’s Welcome A week is a long time in the life of a school. The snow has completely disappeared but this time last weekend I was glued to social media and the online weather forecast, trying to make sure that I’d got every available piece of information to help me decide about school closure. Regardless of the decision, there was one thing that would not be in doubt - there was always going to be somebody who would disagree. This has always been the case, but what is noticeably different now is the willingness with which some individuals rush to post their outrage online, including some who are old enough to know better. I guess I should see this as part of the territory, a challenge amongst many of being Principal of such a high-profile institution as AGS. I think I've learnt to deal with it pretty well, but it did bring home to me just how difficult it must be for some of our youngsters when they first enter the online world, unaware of its capacity for irrational and harmful content and the opportunities for people to comment without thinking. It’s been a sensible decision that in my professional capacity I stay away from Facebook, and don’t use WhatsApp - an app that has many useful features but whose overuse we are beginning to see increasingly associated with poor mental health due to the distress caused by over-sharing or sharing of inaccurate information. And that’s before we get into the inadvertent safeguarding risks of sharing information about a child with a group where you cannot be 100% certain of the background of everyone. -

DETERMINATION Case reference: ADA3483 Objector: A parent Admission Authority: The Academy Trust for Dr Challoner’s Grammar School Date of decision: 31 August 2018 Determination In accordance with section 88H(4) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, I partially uphold the objection to the admission arrangements determined by the academy trust for Dr Challoner’s Grammar School in Buckinghamshire for admissions in September 2019. By virtue of section 88K(2) the adjudicator’s decision is binding on the admission authority. The School Admissions Code requires the admission authority to revise its admission arrangements within two months of the date of this determination. The referral 1. Under section 88H(2) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, (the Act), an objection has been referred to the adjudicator by a parent whose identity is known to me, (the objector), about the admission arrangements (the arrangements) for Dr Challoner’s Grammar School (the school), a selective academy school for boys aged 11 to 18 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire for September 2019. The objection is to the school’s definition of “normal home address”, which is said to be objectively unreasonable and to operate unfairly. Jurisdiction 2. The terms of the academy agreement between the academy trust and the Secretary of State for Education require that the admissions policy and arrangements for the academy school are in accordance with admissions law as it applies to maintained schools. These arrangements were determined by the academy trust, which is the admission authority for the school, on that basis. The objectors submitted their objection to these determined arrangements on 10 May 2018. -
