Having finished the present volume of the Saviours o f Islamic Spirit which takes the heroic story of religious and intellectual endeavour to Shah Waliullah of Delhi and his successors and deputies, the writer of these lines finds himself on Bended knees, glorifying the Lord from the core of his heart. When the work on first volume of this series was started in Muharram 1372 A.H. (SeptemBer 1952) Beginning the story with the Biographical accounts of Imam Hasan Basri and Caliph ‘Umar b. ‘ABdul ‘Aziz, with the help of some sketchy notes jotted down for delivering a few lectures on the suBject, it was difficult to visualize that the narration thus started would cover, step By step, the endeayours and struggles of all the reformers and savants of Islam in different lands from the Beginning of the Islamic era to the twelfth century, and ultimately reach the stage requiring portrayal of the live$ of two great revivalists, Mujaddid Alf Thani and Shah Waliullah Dehlawi. That this feat has been accomplished despite uncertainty of the span of life, vicissitudes http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/ 2 SAVIOURS OF ISLAMIC SPIRIT like ill-health and Bereavements, heavy engagements, inconstancy and indecision and inaBility to read or write anything for fourteen years, it was nothing But the grace of God which caused it to Be carried out successfully. The author can only offer his thanks to the Lord for this Blessing By reciting the Quranic verse : “My Lord, inspire me to render thanks for Thy favours. Thou hast Blessed me and my father and mother, and to Be righteous well-pleasing to Thee; and do Thou admit me. through Thy mercy, amongst Thy righteous servants.” (27-19) And also repeat what the holy Prophet is reported to have said : “Praise Be to Allah whose might and glory disposes one to righteous deeds.” This volume virtually completes the story of revivalist endeavour in so far as it narrates the reformative efforts of the twelfth century A. H. whose salutary effects can still Be seen, at least in the l'ndo-Pak suB-continent, in the form of educational and religious institutions, reformative movements and literary creations designed to Bring aBout an Islamic reawakening. The author cannot therefore Be accused of any overstatement if he claims that with the series he wrote under the title of Siiat Saiyid Ahmad Shahid1 in 1939 he has now Brought to completion, at least in so far as this suB-continent is concerned, this narrative upto the thirteenth or rather to the fourteenth century for he has already compiled the Biographies of quite a few scholars and savants of the last century (of which that of Maulana Mohammad Ilyas deserves to Be mentioned here). In this manner the sixth and even a part of the seventh volume of this series has already Been written by the author. It is now for other researchers and 1. Reformist endeavour is a continuing process, not limited to any particular age or place. Attempts will continue to Be made to renew the Bases of faith, to purify it of all accretions and deviations during the course of time, to spread and develop the Islamic disciplines and to fight the profane, irreligious thoughts and practices till the time Islam of rather the world exists. NoBody can therefore claim to have pronounced the last word on the suBject. A saying of the holy Prophet contains this prediction : “Every race shall have just and God-fearing men of (religious) learning who will be cleansing this reli­ gion from deviations of the over-credulous, false teachings of the irreligious and misrepresentations of the ignorant ” The reformatory work undertaken by Shah Waliullah was Both wide and varied in nature ; its predominant note was in­ tellectual and academic; it comprised instruction, penmanship, propagation of the Scripture and the sunnah.

Taylor Spring 2018 Abstract “Path(s) of Remembrance: Memory, Pilgrimage, and Transmission in a Transatlantic Sufi Community” by Jaison Carter Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology University of California, Berkeley Professor Mariane Ferme, Chair The Mustafawiyya Tariqa is a regional spiritual network that exists for the purpose of assisting Muslim practitioners in heightening their level of devotion and knowledges through Sufism. Though it was founded in 1966 in Senegal, it has since expanded to other locations in West and North Africa, Europe, and North America. In 1994, protegé of the Tariqa’s founder and its most charismatic figure, Shaykh Arona Rashid Faye al-Faqir, relocated from West Africa to the United States to found a satellite community in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. This location, named Masjidul Muhajjirun wal Ansar, serves as a refuge for traveling learners and place of worship in which a community of mostly African-descended Muslims engage in a tradition of remembrance through which techniques of spiritual care and healing are activated. This dissertation analyzes the physical and spiritual trajectories of African-descended Muslims through an ethnographic study of their healing practices, migrations, and exchanges in South Carolina and in Senegal. By attending to manner in which the Mustafawiyya engage in various kinds of embodied religious devotions, forms of indebtedness, and networks within which diasporic solidarities emerge, this project explores the dispensations and transmissions of knowledge to Sufi practitioners across the Atlantic that play a part in shared notions of Black Muslimness.

Finally, lately in the 8th century, Amir Timur thrived from Transoxiana in northeastern Iran, and gradually made obedient Iran and surrounding countries. However, in the Northwest of Iran, Turkmen tribes reigned but during the Timurid raids they had returned to obedience, and just as withdrawal of the Timurid troops, they were quickly back their former power. These clans and tribes sometimes were troublesome to the Ottoman Empires and Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt. Due to the remoteness of these regions of Timurid Capital and, more importantly, lack of permanent government administrations and organizations of the Timurid capital, following Amir Timur’s death, because of dynastic struggles among his Sons and Grandsons, the Turkmens under these conditions were increasing their power and then they had challenged the Timurid princes. The most important goals of this study has focused on investigation of their relationships and struggles. How and why Timurid Empire has begun to combat against Qara Qoyunlu and Aq Qoyunlu Turkmens; what were the reasons for the failure of the Timurid deal with them, these are the questions that we try to find the answers in our study.

Signed: 2 A BSTRACT Problem: Academic study of religious healing has recognised its symbolic aspects, but has tended to frame practice as ritual, knowledge as belief. In contrast, studies of scientific psychiatry recognise that discipline as grounded in intellectual tradition and naturalistic empiricism. This asymmetry can be addressed if: (a) psychiatry is recognised as a form of “religious healing”; (b) religious healing can be shown to have an intellectual tradition which, although not naturalistic, is grounded in experience. Such an analysis may help to reveal why globalisation has meant the worldwide spread not only of modern scientific medicine, but of religious healing. An especially useful form of religious healing to contrast with scientific medicine is Sufi healing as practised by the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order, which has become remarkable for its spread in the “West” and its adaptation to vernacular cultures. Research questions: (1) How is knowledge generated and transmitted in the Naqshbandi- Haqqani order? (2) How is healing understood and done in the Order? (3) How does the Order find a role in the modern world, and in the West in particular? Methods: Anthropological analysis of psychiatry as religious healing; review of previous studies of Sufi healing and the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order; ethnographic participant observation in the Naqshbandi-Haqqani order, with a special focus on healing.
