Finally, lately in the 8th century, Amir Timur thrived from Transoxiana in northeastern Iran, and gradually made obedient Iran and surrounding countries. However, in the Northwest of Iran, Turkmen tribes reigned but during the Timurid raids they had returned to obedience, and just as withdrawal of the Timurid troops, they were quickly back their former power. These clans and tribes sometimes were troublesome to the Ottoman Empires and Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt. Due to the remoteness of these regions of Timurid Capital and, more importantly, lack of permanent government administrations and organizations of the Timurid capital, following Amir Timur’s death, because of dynastic struggles among his Sons and Grandsons, the Turkmens under these conditions were increasing their power and then they had challenged the Timurid princes. The most important goals of this study has focused on investigation of their relationships and struggles. How and why Timurid Empire has begun to combat against Qara Qoyunlu and Aq Qoyunlu Turkmens; what were the reasons for the failure of the Timurid deal with them, these are the questions that we try to find the answers in our study.

HISTORY OF INDIA VOLUME - 5 The Lake of Udaipur History of India Edited by A. V. Williams Jackson, Ph.D., LL.D., Professor of Indo-Iranian Languages in Columbia University Volume 5 – The Mohammedan Period as Described by its Own Historians Selected from the works of the late Sir Henry Miers Elliot, K.C.B. 1907 Reproduced by Sani H. Panhwar (2018) Introduction by the Editor This volume, consisting of selections from Sir Henry M. Elliot’s great work on the history of Mohammedan India as told by its own historians, may be regarded as a new contribution, in a way, because it presents the subject from that standpoint in a far more concise form than was possible in the original series of translations from Oriental chroniclers, and it keeps in view at the same time the two volumes of Professor Lane- Poole immediately preceding it in the present series. Tributes to the value of Elliot’s monumental work are many, but one of the best estimates of its worth was given by Lane-Poole himself, from whom the following paragraph is, in part, a quotation. “To realize Medieval India there is no better way than to dive into the eight volumes of the priceless History of India as told by its own Historians, which Sir H. M. Elliot conceived and began, and which Professor Dowson edited and completed with infinite labor and learning. It is a revelation of Indian life as seen through the eyes of the Persian court analysts. As a source it is invaluable, and no modern historian of India can afford to neglect it.

  • Azerbaijani National Identity: Historical and Contemporary Context
AZERBAIJANI NATIONAL IDENTITY: HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT Javid J. Huseynov, Ph.D.* Azerbaijani-American Council (AAC) presented to the 15th Annual Convention of the Association for Study of Nationalities Columbia University April 15, 2010 ABSTRACT Present study investigates the historical and contemporary trends in the development of Azer- baijani national identity. The primary focus here is on the ethnic component which formed the foundation of a distinct national identity of Azerbaijanis. Both natural and situational cir- cumstances affect the development of any ethnicity. The natural circumstances in formation of Azerbaijani ethnic identity were analyzed mainly in ancient and medieval contexts, while the situational circumstances appear in contemporary context, also defining the cause of a modern Azerbaijani statehood. a Dr. Huseynov is a co-founder and general director of Azerbaijani-American Council (AAC); email: [email protected] This paper is a draft and should not be cited without the permission from the author 1 1. INTRODUCTION The study of national identity as a phenomenon of collective consciousness is crucial in under- standing the development of any society. National identity is a compound term which, depend- ing on the country, may uphold one or more distinctive factors of collective mentality, such as ethnicity, language, culture, or religion. The impact of these factors varies with geographical and historical circumstances. For example, the distinction of national identity in Pakistan is primarily religious and linguistic, while the national identity in Australia is purely geographical. Nevertheless, on the most, if not all of Eurasian continent, the formation of modern nations and the formulation of their identities were primarily driven by ethnicity.

ABD AL-RAHMAN JAMI: “NAQSHBANDI SUFI, PERSIAN POET A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Farah Fatima Golparvaran Shadchehr, M.A. The Ohio State University 2008 Approved by Professor Stephen Dale, Advisor Professor Dick Davis Professor Joseph Zeidan ____________________ Advisor Graduate Program in History Copyright by Farah Shadchehr 2008 ABSTRACT The era of the Timurids, the dynasty that ruled Transoxiana, Iran, and Afghanistan from 1370 to 1506 had a profound cultural and artistic impact on the history of Central Asia, the Ottoman Empire, and Mughal India in the early modern era. While Timurid fine art such as miniature painting has been extensively studied, the literary production of the era has not been fully explored. Abd al-Rahman Jami (817/1414- 898/1492), the most renowned poet of the Timurids, is among those Timurid poets who have not been methodically studied in Iran and the West. Although, Jami was recognized by his contemporaries as a major authority in several disciplines, such as science, philosophy, astronomy, music, art, and most important of all poetry, he has yet not been entirely acknowledged in the post Timurid era. This dissertation highlights the significant contribution of Jami, the great poet and Sufi thinker of the fifteenth century, who is regarded as the last great classical poet of Persian literature. It discusses his influence on Persian literature, his central role in the Naqshbandi Order, and his input in clarifying Ibn Arabi's thought. Jami spent most of his life in Herat, the main center for artistic ability and aptitude in the fifteenth century; the city where Jami grew up, studied, flourished and produced a variety of prose and poetry.

In preparing the thirteen volumes of the Catalogue of Oriental and Indian Coins I was frequently at a loss for chronological lists. Prinsep’s Useful Tables, edited by Edward Thomas, was the only trustworthy English authority I could refer to, and it was often at fault. I generally found it necessaiy to search for correct names and dates in the Arabic historians, and the lists of dynasties prefixed to the descriptions of their coins in my Catalogue were usually the result of my own researches in many Oriental authorities. It has often been suggested to me that a reprint of these lists would be useful to students, and now that the entire Catalogue is published I have collected the tables and genealogical trees in the present volume. : VI PREFACE The work is, however, much more than a reprint of these tables. I have not only verified the dates and pedigrees by reference to the Arabic sources and added a number of dynasties which were not represented in the Catalogue of Coins, but I have endeavoured to make the lists more intelligible by prefixing to each a brief historical introduction.

  • Safavid Dynasty 1 Safavid Dynasty
Safavid dynasty 1 Safavid dynasty Sefewî) were one of the most,ناکەییوەفەس :Azerbaijani: Səfəvilər; Kurdish ;نایوفص :The Safavids (Persian significant ruling dynasties of Iran. They ruled one of the greatest Persian empires since the Islamic conquest of Persia[1] [2] and established the (Twelver) school of Shi'a Islam[3] as the official religion of their empire, marking one of the most important turning points in the history of Islam. This Shia dynasty was of mixed ancestry (Kurdish[4] and Azerbaijani,[5] with intermarriages with Georgian[6] and Pontic Greek[7] dignitaries) and ruled Iran from 1501 to 1722. The Safavid dynasty had its origin in the "Safawiyyah" which was established in the city of Ardabil in the Azerbaijan region of Iran. From their base in Ardabil, the Safavids established control over all of Persia and reasserted the Iranian identity of the region,[8] thus becoming the first native dynasty since the Sassanids to establish a unified Iranian state. Despite their demise in 1736, the Safavids have left their mark down to the present era by establishing and spreading Shi'a Islam in major parts of the Caucasus and West Asia, especially in Iran. Genealogy - The Ancestors of The Safavids The Safavid Kings themselves claimed to be Seyyeds,[9] family descendants of the prophet Muhammad, although many scholars have cast doubt on this claim.[10] There seems now to be a consensus among scholars that the Safavid family hailed from Persian Kurdistan,[3] and later moved to Azerbaijan, finally settling in the 5th/11th century at Ardabil. According to some historians,[11] [12] including Richard Frye, the Safavids were of Azeri (Turkish) origin:[5] A massive migration of Oghuz Turks in the 11th and 12th centuries not only Turkified Azerbaijan but also Anatolia.

  • Nobility in the Bijapuri Kingdom
NOBILITY IN THE BIJAPURI KINGDOM ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF ©octor of Pjilosiopljp IN --0 >\\ HISTORY II BY KcnJ ' fl MOHD. TARIQUE ANWAR ~:^ , .-/Y^ Under the Supervision of PROF. TARIQ AHMED CENTRE OF ADVANCED STUDY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2008 ABSTRACT This work proposes the ;.5t.uay of the 'Nobility in Bijapuri Kingdom' from its foundation in 1489 to its final annexation in 1686 by Aurangzeb into the Mughal Empire. The purpose of this study is to analyse the institution of nobility within the territory of Bijapuri Kingdom, which, was extended roughly from the river Bhima to the river Tungabhadra. Two broad questions have led me to study the present theme: Firstly, the studies on this theme so far attempted, appears to be mainly confined either to the chronological narration of political events or to the cultural history of the Adil Shahi Court. This trend of research may be said to be due to two reasons: the source materials so far used have been mostly the court chroniclers written by the court literati and similar scholars; and the modern historians have chiefly been concerned with the idea of the 'history from above' and most of them have concentrated their energy on rulers and the elites and they missed the socio-political setup as a whole. However, the question that has led me to the present study. That is, when the foreign Muslims (afaqi) settled in the Deccan as conquerors, how and through what institutions did they rule over the indigenous people? Thus, an attempt is being made to know the structure of the state during the Adil Shahi period.

THE LORDS OF THE AUSPICIOUS CONJUNCTION: TURCO-MONGOL IMPERIAL IDENTITY ON THE SUBCONTINENT A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Lisa Ann Balabanlilar, M.A. ****** The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Stephen Dale, Advisor Professor Jane Hathaway ____________________________ Professor Geoffrey Parker Advisor Graduate Program in History Copyright by Lisa Ann Balabanlilar 2007 ABSTRACT Contemporary studies of the Mughal dynasty in India have long been dominated by nationalist, sectarian and ideological agendas which typically present the empire of the Mughal as an exclusively Indian phenomenon, politically and culturally isolated on the sub- continent. Cross disciplinary scholarship on the Middle East and Islamic Central Asia assigns to the Mughals a position on the periphery. Omitting reference to a Central Asian legacy, scholars instead link the Mughals to the preceding nearly one thousand years of Muslim colonization in India. Yet to insist on a thousand years of Muslim continuity in India is to ignore the varied religious, cultural, and political traditions which were transmitted to the subcontinent by a widely diverse succession of immigrant communities. This study radically re-evaluates the scholarly and intellectual isolation with which the Mughals have been traditionally treated, and argues that the Mughals must be recognized as the primary inheritors of the Central Asian Turco- Persian legacy of their ancestor Timur (known in the West as Tamerlane). Driven from their homeland in Central Asia, the Timurid refugee community of South Asia meticulously maintained and asserted the universally admired charisma of their imperial lineage and inherited cultural ii personality.

May 2: Monday. Tehran. Morning visit to the Golestan Palace (Palace of Flowers) which is located on Khordad Square. When Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar (1742-1797) became king, he chose Tehran as the new capital and it was then that Golestan Palace became the official residence of the royal family. Consisting of many buildings, terraces, and courtyards, the palace is set in a walled park veined with canals rushing down from the Tochal Mountains. It stands on the site of the historic Arg (citadel) of Tehran which was originally built in the time of Shah Abbas of the Safavid dynasty and remains an oasis of calm in the heart of the city. The interiors of many of the buildings are splendid and evoke a time when foreign dignitaries were invited to the Qajar court. Both the Eyvan-e Takht-e Marmar ("Terrace of the Marble Throne") and the Talar-e Aineh ("Hall of Mirrors") are famous for the spectacular mirror work that covers their walls. Lunch at a wonderful local restaurant. After lunch drive to the Iranian crown jewels. This spectacular collection of jewels, stored in the basement vault of the Bank Milli Iran, was closed for many years but is now open on certain days to the public.
