Naqshbandi Sufi, Persian Poet ABD AL-RAHMAN JAMI: “NAQSHBANDI SUFI, PERSIAN POET A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Farah Fatima Golparvaran Shadchehr, M.A. The Ohio State University 2008 Approved by Professor Stephen Dale, Advisor Professor Dick Davis Professor Joseph Zeidan ____________________ Advisor Graduate Program in History Copyright by Farah Shadchehr 2008 ABSTRACT The era of the Timurids, the dynasty that ruled Transoxiana, Iran, and Afghanistan from 1370 to 1506 had a profound cultural and artistic impact on the history of Central Asia, the Ottoman Empire, and Mughal India in the early modern era. While Timurid fine art such as miniature painting has been extensively studied, the literary production of the era has not been fully explored. Abd al-Rahman Jami (817/1414- 898/1492), the most renowned poet of the Timurids, is among those Timurid poets who have not been methodically studied in Iran and the West. Although, Jami was recognized by his contemporaries as a major authority in several disciplines, such as science, philosophy, astronomy, music, art, and most important of all poetry, he has yet not been entirely acknowledged in the post Timurid era. This dissertation highlights the significant contribution of Jami, the great poet and Sufi thinker of the fifteenth century, who is regarded as the last great classical poet of Persian literature. It discusses his influence on Persian literature, his central role in the Naqshbandi Order, and his input in clarifying Ibn Arabi's thought. Jami spent most of his life in Herat, the main center for artistic ability and aptitude in the fifteenth century; the city where Jami grew up, studied, flourished and produced a variety of prose and poetry. Religion during the Timurid era obviously left a profound mark on Jami, especially ii through the Naqshbandis who formed the most influential Sufi order of the realm in the fifteenth century. Living in a vortex of political, cultural, and social settings, Jami became the poet laureate of the era. In his historical work, Habib al-Siyar, Khwandamir, the celebrated historian of the Timurids, writes the name of 211 poets and men of learning of the era, one of whom was Jami. The sheer number of poets and writers was the result of the patronage of Timur's offspring, who were semi-independent rulers of different parts of the vast territory that Timur conquered. The competition among these minor courts created an appropriate condition for artisans and learned ones to produce quality works. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Jami was not attached to the court or to the house of any noble, and he never reached out to anyone to receive monetary rewards. Yet he was generously paid for his works, which were professionally bound and copied by some of the best calligraphers of Herat, thanks to funding provided by his close friend and follower, Ali- shir Nava'i who would send out Jami’s works to rulers, nobles, and dignitaries. Jami was a highly respected and renowned figure in the Timurid dynasty, because besides his status as the poet laureate of the era and because he was affiliated with the Naqshbandi Sufi tariqa, the most prominent order in the region at the time. The sheikh (leader) of the order, Khwaja Ahrar (d.1490), was enormously powerful and influential in Central Asia and Transoxiana. Jami acted as the caliph (representative) of Khwaja Ahrar in Herat. He lived at a time when the social condition of the population in the Timurid domain was not at its best, due to high taxes and oppression by the dynasty. Jami was iii able to reduce people's suffering through his position at the court and as the poet and Sufi of the Naqshbandis in the city.     DORIS BEHRENS-ABOUSEIF SCHOOL OF ORIENTAL AND AFRICAN STUDIES UNIVERSITY OF LONDON The Fire of 884/1479 at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and an Account of Its Restoration Among the series of fires that are reported to have hit the Umayyad Mosque of Damascus during its pre-modern history, the fire of 884/1479 is so far the least known.1 The well-known sources for this period, such as the contemporary Cairene chronicles of Ibn Iya≠s and al-S˛ayraf|, do not mention it; nor does al-Sakha≠w| refer to the subsequent substantial restoration of the Umayyad Mosque in his long list of Qa≠ytba≠y's construction and renovation works.2 The Syrian historian Ibn T˛u≠lu≠n (880–953/1476–1546), whose chronicle starts in 884, the same year when the fire broke out, when he was still a child, refers only briefly to the restoration works that followed this fire.3 In his biographical dictionary of the viceroys of Damascus, however, he does not include any reference to this fire under the entry of Qa≠ns˝u≠h al-Yah˝a≠w|, the viceroy in charge at that time.4 However, a detailed description of the catastrophe and the following restoration works can be found in the chronicle H˛awa≠dith al-Zama≠n wa-Wafaya≠t al-Shuyu≠kh wa-al-Aqra≠n by the Damascene historian Ah˝mad ibn Muh˝ammad ibn ‘Umar al- Middle East Documentation Center.     ALBANIAN CONTEMPORARY QUR’ANIC EXEGESIS: SHEIKH HAFIZ IBRAHIM DALLIU’S COMMENTARY (Tafsir Al-Quran Kontemporari Albania: Ulasan Oleh Sheikh Hafiz Ibrahim Dalliu) Hajredin Hoxha1 ABSTRACT: The objective of this study is to explore and analyze the main intellectual and religious trends and tendencies in the writings of Albanian Ulema in their dealing with Qur’anic studies, in the modern time, in the Balkan Peninsula in Europe. In conducting this study, the researcher has utilized inductive, historical, critical and analytical methodologies. The Albanian lands in the Balkan Peninsula were governed and ruled by the Islamic Ottoman Empire for almost five centuries. Historically, to some extent and despite the conflicts and clashes, Albanians were able to show to the world a very good sample of peace, unity and harmony among themselves, as a multi religious and multi ethnic society. The attention and the engagement of the Albanian Ulema with the Qur’anic sciences have been tremendous since the spread of Islam, and have to be taken into consideration. Despite the tough and serious political, economic and religious challenges in the 19th and 20th centuries, they were not distracted from conducting their learning and teaching affaires. As a result of very close contacts and relations with different ideologies, cultures and civilizations within the Ottoman mixed ethnicity and in the middle-east, the researcher based on different sources, was able to identify and discover Sunni Maturidi dogmatic approach in dealing with Quranic Exegesis in the Commentary of Sheikh Hafiz Ibrahim Dalliu-a case study. The results and conclusions of this study are to be taken into consideration also, especially when we know that the current and modern historical sources of Albania are deviated almost completely and not to be trusted at all, because they failed to show to the Albanian people a real picture of Islam.

By studying several websites and weblogs that have a religious orientation, different layers of religious authority including “religious hierarchy, structures, ideology, and sources” (Campbell, 2009) can be identified. Also, using Weber’s definition of the three types of authority, “rational-legal, traditional, and charismatic” (1968), the specific type of authority that is being presented on blogosphere can be recognized. The Internet presents a level of liberty for the discussion of sensitive topics in any kind of religious cyberspace, specifically the Islamic one. In this way, the Internet is expanding the number and range of Muslim voices, which may pose problems for traditional forms of religious authority or may suggest new forms of authority in the Islamic world. The interaction between the Internet and religion is often perceived as contradictory, especially when it is religion at its most conservative practice. While the international and national applications of the Internet have increased vastly, local religious communities, especially fundamentalists, perceived this new technology as a threat to their local cultures and practices.

These are the first words with which Dowlatshah Samarqandi begins the notice he devotes to Hafez in his Tazkerat al-sho‘ara in 1486. Then he adds: ‘His excellence (fazilat) and his perfection (kamal) are endless and the art of poetry is unworthy of his rank.
