Iran 2019 International Religious Freedom Report
IRAN 2019 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution defines the country as an Islamic republic and specifies Twelver Ja’afari Shia Islam as the official state religion. It states all laws and regulations must be based on “Islamic criteria” and an official interpretation of sharia. The constitution states citizens shall enjoy human, political, economic, and other rights, “in conformity with Islamic criteria.” The penal code specifies the death sentence for proselytizing and attempts by non-Muslims to convert Muslims, as well as for moharebeh (“enmity against God”) and sabb al-nabi (“insulting the Prophet”). According to the penal code, the application of the death penalty varies depending on the religion of both the perpetrator and the victim. The law prohibits Muslim citizens from changing or renouncing their religious beliefs. The constitution also stipulates five non-Ja’afari Islamic schools shall be “accorded full respect” and official status in matters of religious education and certain personal affairs. The constitution states Zoroastrians, Jews, and Christians, excluding converts from Islam, are the only recognized religious minorities permitted to worship and form religious societies “within the limits of the law.” The government continued to execute individuals on charges of “enmity against God,” including two Sunni Ahwazi Arab minority prisoners at Fajr Prison on August 4. Human rights nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) continued to report the disproportionately large number of executions of Sunni prisoners, particularly Kurds, Baluchis, and Arabs. Human rights groups raised concerns regarding the use of torture, beatings in custody, forced confessions, poor prison conditions, and denials of access to legal counsel. -

The Role of the Four Deputies of Imam Mahdi (a) in Shiite Hadith Literature Morteza Maddahi1 Abstract After the holy Qur’an, Hadith is the second source of Islam in terms of authority and the first in terms of extent. Contrary to the Qur’an, hadith is SURQHWRPDQLSXODWLRQDQGIRUJHU\DVWKH3URSKHW V ZDUQHGDERXWLWDQG history testifies to it. Prior to the era of occultation, many hadiths were presented to the Imams, and they rejected some of them and corrected RUH[SODLQHGWKHRWKHUV$O6KD\NKDOৡDGnjT G JDWKHUHGPDQ\ of these hadiths in his 0DҵƗQƯ DODNKEƗU. On the other hand, the most important Shiite hadith books were compiled after the occultation of the Twelfth Imam. The period of the Minor Occultation was a crucial time in Shiite history. With a historical and analytical approach, this article studies the identity and conditions of the Four Deputies and their role in guiding the Shiite community in relation to Hadith. Jamaluddin, MA Lecturer at Faculty of Islamic Studies UISU Medan, Indonesia Abstract: There are two largest madhhab in the world: Sunni and Shi’a. Each of these schools has different opinion about the hadith which can be used as a proposition of law. This dissent sometimes creates dispute and anarchic actions that leads to disharmony relationship in Muslim themself. This study tries to find out the factors that lead this different opinion between Sunni and Shi’a in understanding the hadith. Sunni argues that the hadith sourced from all over the companions of the Prophet Muhammad can be used as a proposition of law if it is valid or ṣaḥīḥ. All the companions of the Prophet, according to the Sunnis, are fair. As for the Hadith or Sunnah used by Shi’a is an authentic hadith narrated only by Ahlu Bait. The example of contradictory problem between Sunnis and Shi’a is mutʻah marriage. According to Sunni, this can of married is forbidden while Shi’a allow it. Sunni and Shi’a in establishing a legal marriage such as mut’ah equally refer to the hadith of Muhammad SAW. To maintain and create harmony between Sunni and Shi’a, it must be there is a mutual respect and appreciation for opinions outside his madhhab as long as the guidance are Qur'an and the hadith. -

Alevism-Bektashism From Seljuks to Ottomans and Safavids; A Historical Study ALEVISM-BEKTASHISM FROM SELJUKS TO OTTOMANS AND SAFAVIDS; A HISTORICAL STUDY Bir Tarih Araştırması: Selçuklardan Osmanlılara Kadar Alevilik- Bektaşilik’ Eine historische Untersuchung über das Alevitentum-Bektaschitum von der Seldschuckischen bis zu Osmanischen Periode Fahimeh Mokhber DEZFOULI* Alevi-Bektashi is one of the significant orders which was formed in Anatolia in 13th AD. Haj Bektash Veli, as the founder of the order, migrated to Anatolia from the focal point of Sufism, Khorasan. Probably Haj Bektash Veli was the caliph of Baba Elyas Khorasani, who was the leader of the Baba’i uprising that shook the foundations of the Seljuks in Anatolia in the first half of the 13th century. Eventually, the Seljuks could defeat them by the Frankish forces aid. Loss of his brother in the battle was enough for Haj Bektash to avoid a new military confrontation with the Seljuks, however, followed the intellectual path of the Baba’is in the rest of his life. Many factors such as the religious beliefs of Turks in the pre-Islamic era, the prevailing Sufi thoughts in Anatolia and Christianity affected the Bektashis during their long history. The backbone of the order was the cultural and religious tolerance that found several adherents in Anatolia. In Ottoman era Bektashiya became the official order that spiritually led the Jannissaries. Alevi-Bektashi also was influenced by other streams of thoughts such as Hurufis and the shi’i propaganda of the Safavid sheikhs. This article by historical approach examine the formation of Alevi-Bektashi order and clarifies how they were influenced and then had their impact on the history of Iran and Turkey.
