I am happy to acknowledge that the university where I received my training in the period from 1933 to 1940 also provided the stimulus for its final completion. I am greatly indebted to the personal interest taken in my studies by professor Dr. W. F. Wertheim and Dr. J. M. Pluvier. Borders Itineraries on the Edges of Iran edited by Stefano Pellò A Linguistic Conversion Mīrzā Muḥammad Ḥasan Qatīl and the Varieties of Persian (ca. 1790) Stefano Pellò (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Italia) Abstract The paper deals with Mīrzā Muḥammad Ḥasan Qatīl, an important Persian-writing Khatri poet and intellectual active in Lucknow between the end of the 18th and the first two decades of the 19th century, focusing on his ideas regarding the linguistic geography of Persian. Qatīl dealt with the geographical varieties of Persian mainly in two texts, namely the Shajarat al-amānī and the Nahr al- faṣāḥat, but relevant observations are scattered in almost all of his works, including the doxographic Haft tamāshā. The analysis provided here, which is also the first systematic study on a particularly meaningful part of Qatīl’s socio-linguistic thought and one of the very few explorations of Qatīl’s work altogether, not only examines in detail his grammatical and rhetorical treatises, reading them on the vast background of Arabic-Persian philology, but discusses as well the interaction of Qatīl’s early conversion to Shi‘ite Islam with the author’s linguistic ideas, in a philological-historical perspective. Unprivileged Power: The Strange Case of Persian (and Urdu) in Nineteenth-Century India I T , but it makes no attempt to present a solution. It is rather like a bad detective story where the questions, Who did it? and how? and why? are left unanswered. Perhaps the interest of this paper should lie in the fact that the question that it asks has never before been asked, or its existence even hinted at. Why the question should never have occurred to anyone so far is itself an interesting ques- tion, and an attempt to answer it is likely to tell us something about the way the minds of our historians have worked over the last century-and-a- quarter. I will, however, make no attempt to address this latter question, for my main problem is thorny enough as it is. Simply stated, the problem is: Why is it that sometime in the early nineteenth century, users of (Indian) Persian, and Urdu, lost their self- confidence and began to privilege all Indo-Iranian Persian writers against the other two, and all kinds of Persian and Arabic against Urdu? The lin- guistic totem pole that this situation created can be described as follows: TOP: Iranian Persian, that is, Persian as written by Iranians who never came to India. UPPER MIDDLE: Indo-Iranian Persian, that is, Persian written by Iranian-born writers who lived most or all of their creative life in India. Dramatis Personae (Major Figures and Works) Sirāj al-Dīn ‘Alī Khān “Ārzū” (1689–1756 AD/1101–69 AH) Born to a lineage of learned men descended from Shaykh Chiragh Dihlavi and Shaykh Muhammad Ghaws Gwaliori Shattari, Arzu was raised and edu- cated in Gwalior and Agra. In 1719–20 AD/1132 AH, he moved to Delhi, where he was at the center of scholarly and literary circles. An illustrious scholar, teacher, and poet, he wrote literary treatises, commentaries, poetic collections (dīvāns), and the voluminous commemorative biographical compendium (tazkirih), Majma‘ al-Nafa’is (1750–51 AD/1164 AH) centered on Timurid Hin- dustan. He was teacher to many Persian and Urdu poets, and his position on proper idiomatic innovation was central to the development of north In- dian Urdu poetic culture. Arzu’s main patron was Muhammad Shah’s khān-i sāmān, Mu’tamin al-Dawlih Ishaq Khan Shushtari, and then his eldest son, Najam al-Dawlih Ishaq Khan. Through Ishaq Khan’s second son, Salar Jang, Arzu moved to Lucknow under Shuja‘ al-Dawlih’s patronage in 1754–55, as part of the migration of literati seeking patronage in the regional courts after Muhammad Shah’s death. Arzu died soon after in 1756, and his body was transported back to Delhi for burial. xvi Dramatis Personae Mīr Ghulām ‘Alī “Āzād” Bilgrāmī (1704–86 AD/1116–1200 AH) He was a noted poet, teacher, and scholar (of Persian and Arabic). A probing took beyond Hindutva to get to the heart of Gujarat THE SHAPING OF MODERN Many aspects of mortem Gujarati society and polity appear pulling. A society which for centuries absorbed diverse people today appears insular and patochiai, and while it is one of the most prosperous slates in India, a fifth of its population lives below the poverty line. J Drawing on academic and scholarly sources, autobiographies, G U ARAT letters, literature and folksongs, Achyut Yagnik and Such Lira Strath attempt to Understand and explain these paradoxes, t hey trace the 2 a 6 :E e o n d i n a U t V a n y history of Gujarat from the time of the Indus Valley civilization, when Gujarati society came to be a synthesis of diverse peoples and cultures, to the state's encounters with the Turks, Marathas and the Portuguese t which sowed the seeds ol communal disharmony. Taking a closer look at the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the authors explore the political tensions, social dynamics and economic forces thal contributed to making the state what it is today, the impact of the British policies; the process of industrialization and urbanization^ and the rise of the middle class; the emergence of the idea of '5wadeshi“; the coming £ G and hr and his attempts to transform society and politics by bringing together diverse Gujarati cultural sources; and the series of communal riots that rocked Gujarat even as the state was consumed by nationalist fervour.
