DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC STUDIES DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC STUDIES ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2003 ABSTRACT The present work seeks lo investigate and study critically the contribution of Shah Waliuliah Muhaddith Dihiawi to Hadith literature. Shah WaJiuilah bin Abdur Rahim ai-'Umarial-Dihlawi(lil4H,-1176H./i703-1762) was lived in the eighteenth century C.E., an age of down fall of Muslim power, political dissetllement, social degeneration and educational backward- ness and indigence. Shah Waliuliah Dihiawi was an unparalleled Islamic scholar, thinker and reformer in Indian sub-continent. He spent the whole of his life in the service of religion and education and worked for the interest of Muslim-society. His sole anxiety all the time had been to see the Muslims powerful, strong and ruling based upon the Islamic system. He tried all his best to restore the Muslims' power and reform the society and revive the pure religion and establish an accurate and complete Islamic educational system.' Shah Waiiuiiah completed his education under his father Shaikh Abdur Rahim (d.li31H./1718) and other scholars in India and served as the teacher in Rahimiyah Madrasah which was established by his father in Delhi for twelve years. During this long teaching period he studied deep and widely and taught the students different religious and rational subjects, so he got the opportunity to reflect over a variety of issues.

    DEVELOPMENT OF SUFISM IN BENGAL ABSTRACT Thesis Submitted for the degree of JBottor of $I)tlo£iopIi|> IN ISLAMIC STUDIES BY MUHAMMAD ISMAIL Under the supervision of Mr. AZOUDDIN KHAN READER DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC STUDIES ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 1989 1 The present work seeks to investigate the Development of Sufism in Bengal from the thirteenth to the twentieth century. Mo serious attempt has so far been Tiade to reconstruct the history of Sufism in i^-'ngal. The attention of the most of the scholars has centred- round the political history of Bengal,- making occasior. 1 references to its Saints but their accounts are uncritical and generally based upon the later hagiological material. In the present work an attempt has been made to make a fairly extensive and critical use of all sources available. Throughout the work we have attempted to justify by reasonable argument our reliance on a parti- cula'r source, wherever there has been a conflict of evidence or a contradiction. This aspect of the development of Sufism in Bengal is based on brief references found in the chronicles of Northern India and on the data collected from a study of inscriptions, coins and other archae^ogical evidence.. There is, however, sufficient materials in these chronicles as well as in the contemporary literature both Persian and Bengali available, with the help of which Develoo- nent of Sufisn in ^engal can be reconatructecl. In fact the Islaiaic proslelytization of India did not begin with coercion and blloashed; the first conversion were made by its Saints. Bengal's contact with the wiUslims, in the field of trade, colonization, and missionary work, began much earlier than its conquest in the thirteenth century.

His was the period when the Islamic societ> ^\as on its way to ultimate ruin and destruction. The political power of the Mughal dyncsty was challenged by new forces and the corrupt Mughal kings were unroindftil of their responsibility as nilers. Shah Waliullah was a witness to the political religious educational, economic and other conditions of the society and was conscious of the consequence to which the society was exposed. He tried his h't to halt and divert the procc- of the destruction of Islamic values in the muslun society with the zeal of a reformer. In this thesis a general survey of his achievements has been attempted with particular emphasis on his contribution to Islamic education. 1 he study has been conducted underjchapters excluding the introduction, which are I summarized below: The introduction forms the background of the study in which discussion on various aspects of Shah Waliullah's achievements has been attempted from the beginning of his career to its end. fhis is followed by chapter I, which deals with the events of Shah Waliullah's life. He was bom on the 4th of Shawwal 1114 A.H.

The Sihilah-i- Khwajgan known as the Naqshbandi Sufi Silsilah in India, originated in Transoxiana (Turkey) under the foundership of Khwajah Abu Yousuf Hamdani (d.c.e. *f14G),Khwajah B^au'd-din Naqshband (c. e. 1318) was the seventh in the Naqshbandi series. He was adopted by Khwajah Muhammad Shamsi, the fifth descendent of Hamdani. Bahau'd-din Naqshbandi died in (c.e 1389) and buried near Bukliara. His successor was Alau'd-din Attar (c.e. 1393) who was married to his daughter and though Attar was a renowned Sufi, it was Maulana Yaqub Carkhi (d. c. e. 1477) who continued the Naqshbandi lineage. It was his descendant Khwajah 'Ubaydullah Ahrar, who established Naqshbandi supremacy in Central Asia. Khwajah Nuru'd-din 'Ubaydullah Ahrar, was the forerunner of the Indian line of the Naqshbandis. Khwajah Nuru'd- din 'Ubaydullah Ahrar died in 29 Kabiul Awwal 895 A.H/ 20 Februrj, 1490 c.e. and buried in his Khanqah in Samarkand. The Khwajah had a large number of disciples of whom the prominent were 'Umar Shaykh Mirza, father of Babur and his son Khwajah Muhammad Yahya. Khwajah 'Abdul Shahid and Khwajah Kalan who migrated from central Asia to India, and Khwajah 'Abdur Rahim Jami, was also the disciple of Khwajah 'UbayduUah Ahrar.

The events of the past do cast their shadows on the developments of future but normally with the passage of time new realities overshadow the legacy of the past. The history of the European countries sufficiently demonstrates that the compulsions to live interdependently helped remove those misgivings which had created apparently insurmountable cleavages between them in the past. Today, Europe appears more united than it had ever been. South Asia, unfortunately, tells a different story. The two big countries of the region, Pakistan and India, have travelled a long course of six and a half decades as independent and separate entities but there has never been a period when their relations could be regarded as normal, if not cordial. This long history of adverse relationship owes itself to the times and tribulations of pre-partition era. The long years and decades since then have not been able to help these countries come out of the quagmire in which the people of united India were entrenched once. Anchored in the past, India and Pakistan have fought three major wars in 1948, 1965 and 1971. To this can be added the Kargil event which may be designated as a semi-war. The efforts on the part of different agencies, groups and individuals to harmonize the two countries’ positions and to put them on a course leading to wiser solutions have not yet borne fruit.
