Art of Bangladesh: the Changing Role of Tradition, Search for Identity and Gl... 1 Art of Bangladesh: the Changing Role of Tradition, Search for Identity and Globalization Lala Rukh Selim Introduction 1 The art of Bangladesh embodies the social and political changes that have transformed the country/region through history. What was once a united state of Bengal is now divided into two parts, the sovereign country of Bangladesh and the state of West Bengal in India. The predominant religion in Bangladesh is Islam and that of West Bengal is Hinduism. Throughout history, ideas and identifications of certain elements of culture as ‘tradition’ have played an important role in the construction of notions of identity in this region, where multiple cultures continue to meet. The calibre of the conversations was a rare happening in our region.¨ -Dayanita Singh, DAS 2016 Participating Artist 5 The Dhaka Art Summit (DAS) is an international, non-commercial research and exhibition platform for art and architecture connected to South Asia. With a core focus on Bangladesh, DAS re-examines how we think about these forms of art in both a regional and an international context. Founded in 2012 by the Samdani Art Foundation, DAS is held every two years in a public- private partnership with the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, with the support of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Ministry of Information of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the National Tourism Board, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), and in association with the Bangladesh National Museum. Rejecting the traditional biennale format to create a more generative space for art and exchange, DAS’s interdisciplinary programme concentrates its endeavours towards the advancement and promotion of South Asia’s contemporary and historic creative communities.

SHAH WALIULLAH'S CONTRIBUTION TO HADITH LITERATURE A CRITICAL STUDY ABSTRACT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF iortor of f l|tloHopl|i| IN ISLAMIC STUDIES BY MUHAMMAD MOSLEH UDDIN UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF PROF. ABDUL ALI D.LItt. CHAIRMAN. DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC STUDIES DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC STUDIES ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2003 ABSTRACT The present work seeks lo investigate and study critically the contribution of Shah Waliuliah Muhaddith Dihiawi to Hadith literature. Shah WaJiuilah bin Abdur Rahim ai-'Umarial-Dihlawi(lil4H,-1176H./i703-1762) was lived in the eighteenth century C.E., an age of down fall of Muslim power, political dissetllement, social degeneration and educational backward- ness and indigence. Shah Waliuliah Dihiawi was an unparalleled Islamic scholar, thinker and reformer in Indian sub-continent. He spent the whole of his life in the service of religion and education and worked for the interest of Muslim-society. His sole anxiety all the time had been to see the Muslims powerful, strong and ruling based upon the Islamic system. He tried all his best to restore the Muslims' power and reform the society and revive the pure religion and establish an accurate and complete Islamic educational system.' Shah Waiiuiiah completed his education under his father Shaikh Abdur Rahim (d.li31H./1718) and other scholars in India and served as the teacher in Rahimiyah Madrasah which was established by his father in Delhi for twelve years. • Development of Sufism in Bengal
DEVELOPMENT OF SUFISM IN BENGAL ABSTRACT Thesis Submitted for the degree of JBottor of $I)tlo£iopIi|> IN ISLAMIC STUDIES BY MUHAMMAD ISMAIL Under the supervision of Mr. AZOUDDIN KHAN READER DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC STUDIES ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 1989 1 The present work seeks to investigate the Development of Sufism in Bengal from the thirteenth to the twentieth century. Mo serious attempt has so far been Tiade to reconstruct the history of Sufism in i^-'ngal. The attention of the most of the scholars has centred- round the political history of Bengal,- making occasior. 1 references to its Saints but their accounts are uncritical and generally based upon the later hagiological material. In the present work an attempt has been made to make a fairly extensive and critical use of all sources available. Throughout the work we have attempted to justify by reasonable argument our reliance on a parti- cula'r source, wherever there has been a conflict of evidence or a contradiction. This aspect of the development of Sufism in Bengal is based on brief references found in the chronicles of Northern India and on the data collected from a study of inscriptions, coins and other archae^ogical evidence.. There is, however, sufficient materials in these chronicles as well as in the contemporary literature both Persian and Bengali available, with the help of which Develoo- nent of Sufisn in ^engal can be reconatructecl. In fact the Islaiaic proslelytization of India did not begin with coercion and blloashed; the first conversion were made by its Saints. Bengal's contact with the wiUslims, in the field of trade, colonization, and missionary work, began much earlier than its conquest in the thirteenth century.
