PO BOX 3393 PORT ELIZABETH SOUTH AFRICA 2 Fayslah Kun Munazarah Note by the Translator Fayslah Kun Munazarah , first printed in 1933 CE, in the Urdu language, is a thorough rebuttal of the verdicts of kufr issued against four senior Ulama of the Deobandi School. The baseless, slanderous fatwa of kufr was presented in the book, Husam al- Haramayn of Molvi Ahmad Rida Khan Barelwi. Sufficient details about the book are given in the author’s introduction. Due to the paucity of information on the subject in the English language, many Muslims in the English-speaking world were easily swayed towards the fallacious view propounded in Husam al-Haramayn due to the vigour with which the fatwa is propagated by its English-speaking proponents and the gravity of the allegations made. The book translated here provides a balanced, level- headed, point-by-point critique of the fatwa, demonstrating with complete clarity the deception of the original accusations against the Deobandi elders and their innocence from the heresies ascribed to them.

For nearly two centuries, i.e. 17th & 18th, it was the principal spiritual order in India and its influence permeated far and deep into Indo-Mus- lim life. Though many Naqshbandi saints came to India and associated themselves with the royal courts of Emperor Babur, Humayun and Akbar. The credit of really organizing and propagating the Naqshbandi silsila in this country goes to Khwaja Muhammad Baqi Billah, who came to India from Kabul, his native town, and his disciple, khalifa and the chief successor Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi known as “Mujad- did-i Alf-i Sani. He played most important role in disseminating the ideology and practices of the Naqshbandi silsilah in India. He was the first Muslim Sufi scholar of the Indian sub-continent whose thought and movement reached far beyond the Indian frontiers and influenced Muslim scholars and saints in different regions. His spiritual descendants (khalifas) zealously participated in the organization of the “Naqshbandi-Mujaddidi” silsilah in India, Afghanistan, Central Asia, Turkey, Arabia, Egypt, Morocco and Indonesia.

“Path(s) of Remembrance: Memory, Pilgrimage, and Transmission in a Transatlantic Sufi Community” By Jaison Carter A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Mariane Ferme, Chair Professor Charles Hirschkind Professor Stefania Pandolfo Professor Ula Y. Taylor Spring 2018 Abstract “Path(s) of Remembrance: Memory, Pilgrimage, and Transmission in a Transatlantic Sufi Community” by Jaison Carter Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology University of California, Berkeley Professor Mariane Ferme, Chair The Mustafawiyya Tariqa is a regional spiritual network that exists for the purpose of assisting Muslim practitioners in heightening their level of devotion and knowledges through Sufism. Though it was founded in 1966 in Senegal, it has since expanded to other locations in West and North Africa, Europe, and North America. In 1994, protegé of the Tariqa’s founder and its most charismatic figure, Shaykh Arona Rashid Faye al-Faqir, relocated from West Africa to the United States to found a satellite community in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. This location, named Masjidul Muhajjirun wal Ansar, serves as a refuge for traveling learners and place of worship in which a community of mostly African-descended Muslims engage in a tradition of remembrance through which techniques of spiritual care and healing are activated. This dissertation analyzes the physical and spiritual trajectories of African-descended Muslims through an ethnographic study of their healing practices, migrations, and exchanges in South Carolina and in Senegal. By attending to manner in which the Mustafawiyya engage in various kinds of embodied religious devotions, forms of indebtedness, and networks within which diasporic solidarities emerge, this project explores the dispensations and transmissions of knowledge to Sufi practitioners across the Atlantic that play a part in shared notions of Black Muslimness.

  • The Islamic Caliphate: a Controversial Consensus
The Islamic Caliphate: A Controversial Consensus Ofir Winter The institution of the caliphate is nearly as old as Islam itself. Its roots lie in the days following the death of Muhammad in 632, when the Muslims convened and chose a “caliph” (literally “successor” or “deputy”). While the Shiites recognize ʿAli b. Abi Talib as the sole legitimate heir of the prophet, the Sunnis recognize the first four “rightly guided” caliphs (al-Khulafa al-Rashidun), as well as the principal caliphates that succeeded them – the Umayyad, Abbasid, Mamluk, and Ottoman. The caliphate ruled the Sunni Muslim world for nearly 1,300 years, enjoying relative hegemony until its abolition in 1924 by Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey. Although Sunni commentators have defined the essence of the caliphate differently in different periods, they tend to agree that the caliphate was founded for the purpose of managing Muslim affairs in accordance with the laws of God and organizing the lives of their people according to the principles of Islamic religious law.1 In practice, the caliphate has experienced highs and lows over the course of its history. In some periods, it exerted authority over political, administrative, financial, legal, and military affairs; in others, it was reduced to the symbolic and spiritual realm, such as leading mass prayers, much in the manner of the modern Catholic papacy.2 The Islamic State’s 2014 announcement on the renewal of the caliphate showed that the institution is not only a governmental-religious institution of the past, but also a living and breathing ideal that excites the imagination of present day Muslims.
