28 April 2017 Dear Parent/Guardian NEWSLETTER 2/10 Welcome back after the holidays. We are looking forward to a busy term with our June examinations as the academic highlight. This term is also the winter sports term (hockey, netball, cross country and rugby). During Monday’s assembly, we welcomed our guest speaker, Mr Dylan Wray, the Grade 12 Learner Council of Masimbambane Secondary School as well as our maintenance staff. Mr Wray addressed the assembly on the historical importance of Workers’ Day and Freedom Day. Considering Workers’ Day celebrations, we introduced the campus maintenance staff to the learners and thanked them for their exceptionally hard work. STAFF MATTERS Congratulations Ms Monica Evans whose eldest daughter, Nina, got married om 8 April. ACADEMICS History On Wednesday, 26 April, we presented a seminar on Africa for our History learners in Grade 12. They were joined by thirty learners from Masimbambane Secondary School. The seminar was conducted by Ms Isa Swanepoel and Ms Gill Sutton, a specialist on African History. Afrikaans On 23 March, Emma Beckley (Grade 8), Carla Naudé (Grade 9) and Gracious Izaks (Grade 11) participated in the ATKV public speaking competition at Parel Vallei High School. Congratulations to Carla and Gracious who will participate in the semi-finals on 26 May. SPORT Tennis The Western Cape Disa tennis team competed in the South African Interprovincial Tournament for high schools in Pretoria from 1 – 4 April. The following learners were part of the u/19 Team: Marno Stander (Grade 11), Kyler Hugo (Grade 8) and Daniela Davidyan (Grade 10). We wish to congratulate Marno who was selected to the SA team. - 2 - Our learners also competed in other tournaments during the school holidays and achieved the following results: Free State TSA Series: 6 – 11 April • u/14: Kyler Hugo – 23rd position • u/16: Daniela Davidyan – 16th position • u/18: Marno Stander – 9th position Jessica Bruyns – 32nd position TSA Junior Nationals: 11 – 16 April • u/14: Kyler Hugo – 35th position • u/18: Marno Stander – 14th position Hockey Fairmont Easter Hockey Tournament Our hockey has been going from strength to strength. We were invited compete in the Fairmont Easter Hockey Tournament during the past school holidays. This tournament is known for its very tough competition with some of the country’s best teams taking part. Knowing this, our coaches and teams were determined to play good hockey whatever the outcome. It was wonderful to see each team getting better and stronger with every match. There were 58 first teams from around South Africa (and Namibia) who participated in this tournament. It was presented by Mr Dylan Wray and afterwards they joined our learners in their classes.
