Grade 10 - 12 AFRIKAANS FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE: Toni November, Larissa da Silva, Minethia Markman, Zoë Meyer.

The competition worked on a knock-out basis where the girls had to spell the words from the lists they had been given to study. After 4 or 5 rounds of elimination, the participants who remained in the competition had to spell unseen words given to them by the adjudicators.

It is quite stressful as you might be given a word that you have not heard at all before. Participants are allowed to ask the adjudicators to use the word in a sentence so that they can try to determine its meaning and spelling from that.

I am very proud to say that in the Afrikaans Home language category all of our girls went through to the unseen words and Johanna Holm made us very proud by coming second in the senior category. In the Afrikaans First Additional category our Johanna Holm Petra de Beer girls also did very well and most of them went through to the unseen words. After quite a nerve wracking few rounds, Petra de Beer took the laurels by winning the Grade 8 and 9 category.

This means that both Johanna and Petra will take part in the National competition that will take place in Stellenbosch on 12 - 13 October. We are extremely proud of them and wish them all the best for the final competition. I also wish to thank all the girls who participated for all their hard work and dedication and for the graceful way in which they all conducted themselves during this competition. Rhenish is very proud of all of you.

Public Speaking

One of the highlights in the public speaking calendar is definitely out participation in the annual Rotary Orators Competition. Rhenish Girls’ High has won the trophy for this competition on numerous occasions and our girls eagerly participate. Their views are erudite, well researched, thoughtfully put together and delivered with passion and confidence.

The internal round of this competition is aimed at selecting our top Junior and top Senior speaker who will go forward to represent Rhenish at the external competition.

The internal round was held on Tuesday 14 August and the competition was tough. Fourteen learners – seven juniors and seven seniors – competed for the honour of representing their school.

The competition was adjudicated by Mrs Margaret van Eck (ex Rhenish teacher) and Mrs Smit (Drama educator). The senior section was won by Victoria Matthews (for the second year in a row) who spoke with great passion on her selected topic, “Can the world win the war on plastic”. The junior winner was Franchesca Gozalo who captivated her audience with her views on, “Power in the wrong hands is dangerous”.

Victoria and Franchesca will represent Rhenish on Thursday 23 August in the inter school Rotary Orators Competition which will be held at Parel Vallei High. We wish both ladies well, we are confident they will do Rhenish proud.

T MINUS 40 DAYS

On 8 August, the matrics of 2018 turned up in style in celebration of our last 40 days of high school. True to Rhenish tradition, we all dressed up as characters, foods, or other delights from our imagination, starting with a specific letter of the alphabet. This year's letter was "J". There were jelly beans, a jalapeño, a jeep, two dinosaurs from the movie "Jurassic World" and an actual jumping castle!

As you can imagine, the excitement began building long before the actual day. Girls boasted about their fabulous outfits weeks in advance, others planned group costumes and many tried very hard to keep their idea a secret. In the end, there was a large variety of costumes which showcased the class of 2018's creativity.

These last 40 days will be tough for every matric and, while we are pleased that our school years are coming to an end, I am sure that there will be a small part in each of us that will miss Rhenish and these sort of traditions.
