    Blooms Hilton Als Taken together, Julian Schnabel’s canvases are a garden illuminated by perception, which is all Gertrude Stein’s “Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose” was about—how we look at what we look at, how to make seeing into words. Schnabel’s masterly Rose Paintings series, exe- cuted in 2015–17, are blooms that will never die on the vine, let alone the vine of thought. The works are a description of the ephemeral—flowers as forces in nature that expire to blossom again. By using materials meant to last—oil, paint, Bondo on wood—Schnabel creates concrete forms out of that which is meant to return to the ground. In these works, he excavates flowers, those captives of time that die with time, and makes them timeless, in pictures that draw on nature to make of it what the artist will—and does. Schnabel makes paintings that are illustrative of his nature. The artist first attracted widespread attention more than three decades ago for work that was unlike anything else, because the Brooklyn-born Schnabel’s point of view has always been unlike anyone else’s. His eye is a rose. In paintings ranging from Self Portrait in Andy’s Shadow (1987) to the Untitled (Chinese Paintings) series (initiated in 2003), the creator worked in a tradition that could not be readily identified because it was his own, an out- growth of his soul. Like flowers that cannot be classified, the Rose paintings come at you from different angles. One painting looks at the roses a little from the left, some are more centered—all of which goes to show how one’s view of a thing can change the thing being observed; our percep- tions change paintings, just as paint changes blank canvas.

INTRODUCTION "To the victor belong the spoils of the enemy."2 The Ro- mans exhibited treasures captured from their prisoners; Napo- 3 leon did the same almost two thousand years later. Throughout world history, looting treasures belonging to ene- mies in times of war has been a constant.4 Looting occurred as recently as the Persian Gulf War, where Saddam Hussein re- moved collections of cultural property from Kuwait. At the end of the 19th century, an idea emerged that cultural objects should be protected from armed, military conflict.5 As a result, the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907 included provisions designed to "protect cultural institutions, historical monuments and works of art from premeditated seizure, destruction, or damage."6 During World War II, Adolph Hitler and his Nazi soldiers wrought havoc on Europe. Johnson presidency is unique in its collection of recordings of the chief executive’s activities. In the 1960s, the White House Naval Photographic Unit (NPC) began producing films that highlighted special presidential trips, visits, and events. Commander Thomas Atkins produced these films for the NPC, starting in 1963 in the John F. Kennedy administration and continuing through the Johnson years. About 43 of the 70+ films are available for viewing on the Lyndon B. Johnson Library’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL853F6EAB74B64D1D . Hofstra University’s Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency has a full digitized set of the Atkins films, which are available for research in the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library’s Special Collections room. In the summer of 2013, Ms. Nancy Lindemeyer (who, along with her husband, Robert Lindemeyer, served with Commander Atkins in the Navy) contacted Hofstra on behalf of the Atkins family to see if the Kalikow Center might be a suitable repository for the collection. Thanks to the generosity of the Atkins family and the cheerful, unstinting efforts of the Lindemeyers, the original 16 mm films were transferred to DVDs and became part of Hofstra’s holdings in 2015.

Slotnick Abstract The overarching aim of this dissertation is to examine the role of human motion processing complex, MT+ during sustained perception and attention. MT+ is comprised of sub-region MT, which processes motion in the contralateral visual field (i.e., left hemisphere MT processes motion in the right visual field and vice versa), and sub- region MST, which processes motion in both the contralateral and ipsilateral visual fields. Whereas previous transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) research has provided compelling evidence that region MT+ is necessary for low-level motion processing, Chapter 1 describes an experiment testing whether the sub-region MT is necessary for contralateral low-level motion processing. Chapter 2 describes an experiment that dissociates low-level sensory attentional modulation in MT+ from high- level attentional control processing in the parietal cortex (i.e., during sustained attention).

In a letter to his brother Theo, the painter writes about his first impressions : «I noticed some magnificent plots of red earth planted with vines, with mountains in the background of the most delicate lilac. And the landscape under the snow with the white peaks against a sky as bright as the snow was just like the winter landscapes the Japanese did.» Light: a key factor in painting and in photography. Arles and its surroundings gained notoriety thanks to those whose highlight its beauty : artists of course (Van Gogh, Lucien Clergue, Christian Lacroix…) but mainly people who protect and develop its traditions as well as cultural and natural heritage. When you stay in Arles, you go through more than 2.000 years of history ! Your journey begins in 80/90 BC : Amphitheater (Arena), Roman Theater, Cryptoportico of the Forum, the Baths of Constantine… All these remains of the colony Arelate are listed on the UNESCO world heritage list, as well as Saint-Trophime’s church and cloister, some of the finest Romanesque buildings in Provence. During the Renaissance period, numerous Arlesian families became prosperous and we can still admire today their townhouses (Hôtel de Luppé, hôtel de Quiqueiran de Beaujeu…). The time machine speeds up. 1912 : Pablo Picasso, inventor of Cubism, arrives in Arles to satisfy two passions : Van Gogh and bullfights. The love story with the city comes to its climax 60 years later when Picasso offers 57 drawings to the Réattu Museum ! Still in the late 60’s, Lucien Clergue, photographer, launches with a few friends Les Rencontres d’Arles, which sets Arles out as an international capital of photography.

In addition, by utilizing Twirling720, the panoramic sound recording is achieved. Through this system, a smart IoT platform between users, films, and devices is built. Finally, this platform is utilized to produce the film and television work Van Gogh in Dream, which is evaluated and analyzed through questionnaires. The results show that the technology system of this set of film and television production is complete, and the production level of film and television works have been significantly improved. The audience recognition of film and television production based on this technology is 55%, and the impression evaluation is over 56%. However, knowledge acquisition is only 20%, and historical understanding is above 50%. These dimensions show that compared with traditional film production, artificial intelligence films can bring a better experience to audiences, but knowledge acquisition is less.
