Nasljedujući otprije istraženo, pripremajući izložbu, poprimili smo ulogu patuljaka na leđima divova, pokuša- vajući unutar zadanoga prostorno-vremenskoga izložbenog okvira ponuditi i svoj pogled. Sonja Martinović Nacionalna i sveučilišna knjižnica u Zagrebu 5 OUR STORY ABOUT THE KRKA RIVER OR HOW THIS EXHIBITION WAS CREATED Uniqueness of waterfalls of the Krka river has become a commonplace in written records, therefore thanks to the echo of its favorable reception, the Krka has been inscribed as a recognizable topos in the map of Eu- rope. As Heraclitus used to say, you cannot step in the same river twice; so we made a “septuple” step trying to present the river by the use of seven possible approaches – through the eyes of ethnologists, archeologists, historians, artists, geographers, local people and today’s visitors. The Krka in explorer’s eyes: the river in seven stories – is one of possible ways to present the defined theme. This offers the possibility to choose, to make the space for different types of researches. Multiple perspectives reflect the collage of multitude of the river’s faces thanks to the multitude of colors of our lens through which we let it pass through. Looking through the relevant books, we have seen how the book of impressions in the bottom of the wa- terfalls had been opened long ago. Following the already explored, in the exhibition preparation we have been given a role of dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants, trying to offer our own perspective within the set spatial and temporal exhibition framework. As for the Krka river, the roles of subjects and the object were swapped. The river, as the observed object, sets apart in the written records becoming also a living figure which remembers the impressions of its visitors. It thus turns out to be a significant factor of the visits paid by famous figures who kept on spreading the voice on the river in the regions where they had come from. In this way they became a part of the circle of persons who gained importance not only due to their contributions to the cultural history of their respective countries, but also due to the fact that they visited the river which linked them to other (prominent) visitors. Giving the significance to the river named the Krka, this exhibitions presents the river in a different way than ever before; the Krka becomes not only the exhibition subject, but also a medium for a passage of the story about people who left traces in the cultural history. Using a metaphor of an open book with seven chapters – waterfalls, embodied in words and images, we will turn the pages of the river between the covers of its riverbed. Sonja Martinović National and University Library in Zagreb 6 KRKA U OKU ISTRAŽIVAČA: RIJEKA U SEDAM PRIČA O rijekama je nezahvalno govoriti. Rijeka Krka u tom smislu nije iznimka. No u svakome drugom jest. Knin : Slap Krkić topole. razglednica, 9,1 x 14,1 cm Zagreb : Griesbach i Knaus, [193_?]. Photograph: Darko Čižmek 7 THE KRKA IN EXPLORER’S EYES: THE RIVER IN SEVEN STORIES It is a thankless task to talk about rivers. They like to tell their stories by themselves: through their quiet currents, sounds of waterfalls, screams of birds flying over their riverbeds. People who love and respect rivers know this. Yet, faced with the rivers’ beauty, sometimes a human should say something. Knowing that the most important things about rivers are almost unsayable, people try to ap- proach them through images, drawings, photographs, prose or poetry. Even dedicated explorers of the river banks know there is always a new chapter waiting to be written down. In this sense, the Krka is not an exception. But in any other sense it is. Just like there are no two identical human beings, so there are no two identical rivers. Thanks to more than 70 kilometers of the river flow − pouring over seven waterfall areas whose beauty was one of the factors due to which the Krka was proclaimed a national park, the seventh in Croatia – we dedicate these seven stories to the Krka river, to its lovers, explorers, riverkeepers, and local people. Each of the stories is symbolically related to one of the waterfalls, offering a different viewpoint regarding the Krka and its area, trying to address, among others, the significance of the river, the history of the Krka region, artists inspired by it, as well as the locals influenced by the river − and who influenced the river in return. The sources for the stories about the Krka river are mostly found in the National and University Library in Zagreb, which stores records by many scientists and explorers, authors and travel writers, people who lived by the river and for the river. The exhibition “The Krka in explorer’s eyes: the river in seven stories” is dedicated to all of them.

Within the framework of a feminist approach, the main objective is to evaduate to what extent certain stereotypes in the portrayal of female characters still determine writing and reading in the literatures of the former Yugoslavia at the end of the 20th century. The first half of this dissertation explores the development of the feminist movement and its literary thought within the boundaries of the ‘Western’ world as well as within the boundaries of the former Yugoslavia.

A PRELIMINARY GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF RELIEF CERAMICS FROM THE NADIN NECROPOLIS A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Elizabeth Gaj Proctor August 2019 © 2019 Elizabeth Gaj Proctor ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This paper analyzes a collection of Hellenistic mold-made relief vessels discovered during the 2018 season of the Nadin-Gradina Archaeological Project through non-destructive portable x-ray fluorescence (pXRF). Archaeometric analysis allows for a reconsideration of previous conclusions about the origins of these vessels and possible trade connections at the site of Nadin. The goal of this study is to determine potential source groups for these vessels through their geochemical composition. While the suitability of pXRF as an analytical tool for archaeological ceramics has been debated, the qualitative design of this research project and the physical characteristics of these vessels allow pXRF to be utilized successfully. Statistical analysis of pXRF results indicate the presence of multiple source groups represented in the samples. The attribution of most of these samples to a smaller number of potential source groups indicates a strong connection between the residents of Nadin and at least two production centers. This thesis is intended to suggest preliminary conclusions about potential sources and suggest areas of further study to better understand the trade connections that brought these vessels to Nadin and the role of Nadin in the Ravni Kotari landscape. ii BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Elizabeth Gaj Proctor received her BA from the University of Maine in 2017, majoring in Anthropology and minoring in Art History and Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
