Spotlight on Elementary Staff: Stephanie McNutt, Primary Literacy Collaborative Coach & First Grade Teacher What is Ohio State Literacy Collaborative? The Literacy Collaborative framework for literacy lessons consists of a number of elements that provide many opportunities for reading and writing. These opportunities include read- ing and writing across the curriculum. Teachers provide direct, research based instruction to guide students in acquiring strategies for maintaining fluency, text comprehension, and vocabulary development. Phonemic awareness and phonics instruction are provided as students engage in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Instruction moves from demonstration and explicit teaching to guided practice and then to independent problem solving. What is Mrs. McNutt’s role as primary literacy coach? This year I am training at The Ohio State University so that next year I can guide our K-3 teaching staff on how we will begin to implement the LC framework. I’ll be teaching them on waiver days and working with them in their classrooms on a regular basis on what we learn as a team. How will Brown Local students benefit from Literacy Collaborative? Not only will teachers be training on site with a highly trained literacy coach, but Mrs. McNutt will help to align reading and writing instruction between grade levels. Students will be using authentic text to learn the love of reading both in whole group and at their own instructional levels. Mrs. McNutt’s training at OSU and teacher materials have been paid for by a Straight A Grant in affiliation with MCESC.
