PATRICK’S DAYWednesdays at 8pm Wednesday, March 17 Believe it or not, it now appears that the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in the New World was held in the Spanish settlement of St. Augustine in Florida, on March 17, 1601, according to contemporary records recently discovered in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, Spain. The 17th century documents also mentioned cannon fire in honor of the saint, and named Patrick as patron saint of the Floridian maize fields. This year, WCLV 104.9 marks Saint Patrick’s Day not with cannon fire, but with a fusillade of Irish music all day long. Tune in for tunes by Irish composers Charles Stanford, Victor Herbert, Hamilton Harty and Turlough O’Carolan, plus plenty of traditional melodies performed by the likes of John O’Conor, Sir James Galway, Kathie Stewart and the Robert M Reel / Shutterstocki M Reel Shaw Chorale. METROPOLITAN OPERA Saturdays at 1pm The Metropolitan Opera remains shuttered for the rest of the 2020–2021 season, but the silver lining of that dark cloud is the continuing series of significant archival Met Opera programs heard each Saturday afternoon WCLV 104.9.
