The name itself comes from ‘Reepschlägern’, a term used to describe ship equipment suppliers here who wove ropes measuring up to 400 metres. Until the 20th century, the Reeperbahn and surrounding district – lovingly referred to as the ‘‘ – belonged to the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the Danish and later Prussian city of Altona. St. Pauli has always been an entertainment district because of its proximity to the port.

The St. Pauli musical “Heiße Ecke” has been thrilling audiences for more than a decade.

”Heisse Ecke“ – the St. Pauli Musical This declaration of love to St. Pauli is about the Reeperbahn hedonists, who are always falling into each other’s arms or stabbing each other in the back – at the Heiße Ecke snack bar. Every night, nine actors delight the audience with over 50 roles and costumes, grandiose, catchy tunes and a fascinating live show. The musical, which is directed by the head of the Schmidts TIVOLI theatre Corny Littman, has already attracted more than 1.5 million visitors. Here you can even enjoy snacks and beverages right in the auditorium. As an exclusive musical menu, the in-house restaurant "Schatto Pauli" has created "Günthers Gedeck", a seat meal consisting of a curried sausage, baguette, and a chilled bottle of Astra beer. What is more, Hamburg historian Wiebke Johannsen offers a themed guided tour through the streets of St. Pauli.  Schmidts TIVOLI, Spielbudenplatz 27–28, www.tivoli.de

The culinary flair of St. Pauli

Freudenhaus If you have achieved something in St. Pauli, you’re likely to find a dish named after you at Freudenhaus. The menu includes specialities such as Lilo Wanders roulade and Corny roast suckling pig. The walls are adorned with paintings of bare-breasted women. But that’s not all what attracts the guests – the German cuisine has made a name for itself with dishes such as potato soup, veal schnitzel, filet of zander and apple pancakes.
